Premiership-Championship, financial fundamentals

610

We’re in the last week of November and one point separates Celtic, Inverness and Dundee United at the top of the table, with Hamilton a point behind.  Dundee, who put on a credible performance yesterday, sit alongside seventh placed Kilmarnock, nine points of the pace.  That’s more than half the league within nine points of the top.

Remember the day Accies relegated Hibs, and we were told how the Championship would be vastly more competitive than the Premiership this season?  There’s a nine point gap at the top of the Championship, which is the least competitive senior league in Britain.

If you were an investor in a Championship team located anywhere outside Gorgie, you might be running the numbers this morning on what another season of lower league football is going to cost to fund.  With ever-diminishing income I know one club who could need £30m investment to get them through another 18 months of Championship football.

The chances of than kind of money materialising are zero, no matter if they flog their properties.  There will also be a structural deficit, even with Premiership football, of having a massive infrastructure to support, without European revenue, of around £10m per season.

If you are a football club in Scotland with a large infrastructure to operate, maintain, police and insure, you need significant and regular European income.  The cost of funding the job to overcome domestic and European competition (all of the latter would be seeded), runs into many tens of millions.

No one has even pretended they have a viable plan to overcome such obstacles.  Hope you can find the fun in financial fundamentals.

Thanks for the feedback on Caesar & the Assassin, which is available here on CQNBookstore, but… if you go here, for an extra £1.01 you can get the book and a DVD (from Cesar (sic.), 6-2 game, Road to Seville, Birthday Bhoys Beating Barca).

There is a new study just released by the

British Psychiatric Association about women and how they feel about their arses.

    The results are pretty shocking:

    1. Only 5% of women surveyed feel their arse is too big.

    2. 10% of women surveyed feel their arse is too small.

    3. The remaining 85% say they don’t care; they love him; he’s a good man and they would have married him anyway.

As one of those nutters, can I just say that your idiotic use of language makes such behaviour that bit easier.

Why is there not a national outcry, especially by the SNP, about how BBC Scotland treats the undead? The SNP organised and Salmond praised a demonstration outside their headquarters when they perceived prejudice in the BBC’s coverage of the Independence debate? It won’t happen. They will always pander to the loyalists, like keeping the Queen and the like.

Those hoping that Scotland will one day vote for some sort of democratic republic are living in a fantasy land. It is never going to happen, much that I personally would want it.

  6. Can we beat Salzburg on Thursday ? They look like a very decent outfit I thought our 2-2 draw in Austria was an excellent result.I hope Astra can get a draw against Dinamo i dont fancy going to Croatia having to get some sort of a result.

  7. I’ve got a spare ticket for the Salzburg match on Thursday for anyone interested. Very good seat in Section 202, can arrange to meet at the stadium – no cash required, just prefer it to be used rather than go to waste. Please post if desired.

  9. To be frank I’m glad the Govt aren’t wasting time on proving Rangers died. There are far more important things to be getting on with.

Outside of Celtic social media nobody really cares you know. Up to a point neither do I. As I’ve said many a time I always expected whatever team played out of Ibrox would attract their support whether they’d started afresh or not. Even with a different name, we’d still have ended up playing the ‘Huns’ four times a season.

  10. We used to go to CP to forget the cares of our world and watch our beloved CELTIC, in good times and very bad times.

Now a certain militant ‘smart arse’ element within our support are trying to turn our club into a political organisation.

We deal with the troubles of the world every day – can we not have a few hours a week to recharge our batteries?

These Labour-hating, SNP supporting, indy fanatics should organise their activities elsewhere – CELTIC is NOT a politcal football, or indeed a suitable platform for their short-sighted and immature rubbish.

  11. Weeminger –

    Absolutely spot on.

I just don’t understand why anyone would take the trouble to write to a radio station or TV broadcaster or newspaper to complain that they have suggested or openly stated that Rangers came out of administration or liquidation or weren’t liquidated or that they were relegated or that they are hoping to “return” to the top flight.

We all know the truth. They were liquidated and the current occupiers of Ibrox are a new club.

So what if the media are in denial? It doesn’t make the truth become a lie.

As you say Weeminger . . . there are surely more important things in the world, even the world of football, to get upset about.

It has become an obsession on CQN and elsewhere on Celtic cyberspace. So much so that if a former Celtic player or manager says the wrong thing with regard to the status of the Rangers, the hatred heaped upon him is unbelievable and akin to the venom reserved for rapists and murderers.

Maybe it’s my age, but I just don’t get it. We all know the truth. Why let the denial of others get to us?

I think we certainly can beat Salzburg but I think it will be very close, and maybe a very scrappy game. I don’t think we will keep a clean sheet.

I agree that going to Zagreb looking for a result is unnerving prospect.

Remember when we missed out on Liam Boyce, but it didn’t really work out for him at Werder Bremmen? He just went over and played in their reserves/B team, if at all. Maybe a good idea to buy then loan back, or loan to another team that will give him regular first team football?

Every player is different I guess. This boy could be a better player than McGinn who would be a better bet on our bench than Tonev, Boerritger, etc.

Just wondered if anyone has seen him play and what his attributes are. I agree on the loaning out for first team fitba. Championship seems to be a rough and tumble league to get up to speed. Not a lot of quality there though. Might be good to give the boy a run there for a few months if he signs.

  17. I fear we’ll not be ‘tough’ enough for the huns in the LCSF either, on or off the pitch. The players are not combative enough for what we all saw on Saturday at Tynecastle. I mean, who are the Celtic players you’d want in the trenches with you?

    VVD?

    Izzy?

    AM?

Broony – who leans with his chin?

    SJ? Yip.

    Muldini?

    Commons?

    JG? Yip.

    LG? Yip.

    Scepovic? Yip

Does the dug-out have the know how to ‘steel’ the players for this game when you consider that, mibbery will be off the richter(sp) scale?

Are the fans capable of looking after themselves in the face of the evil ones or, has todays Celtic support become too pampered to be up for a revisit to 1980?

I know that, traditionally the Celtic fans would need to be extremely provoked to re-act to any circumstances that might be too un-bearable, not to re-act to.

But, if…..the LCSF goes ahead it’ll be ‘shame game 2’ with the Celtic ‘bored’ looking the other way till it all blows over and grossly neglecting their duties.

    I always ask…..where’s the

    Danny McGrain?

    Big Roy Aitken?

    Murdo MacLeod?

    Big Mark McGhee?

With a ‘spine’ like that, the attitude from me, at least, was bring on anybody coz, 1st ye have to win the battles and not be naive enough to try to play football the ‘Glasgow Celtic Way’ when ye don’t have – ‘Glasgow Celtic Players’ just look at Brendan Rogers for example. BR – I hope – wins everything he enters coz, if anybody deserves ‘happy days’ it’s the Liverpool fans and, best of luck to them all.

But, back to us…I had hopes that, Johnny Collins would be the ‘street-wise-savvy-ghuy’ that RD could turn to and, don’t get me wrong – Johnny Collins isny a threat to RD, far from it but, his comments last week about – missing the huns – smacks of being conditioned if you are to be lucky enough to join the Celtic coaching staff – you must drink from PL/the boreds ‘soup-bowl’. This structuring will bring the club down to the degree that, we’ll be so piss poor that the huns will be looking forward to the LCSF instead of, having nightmares at the thought of it.

Also, please stop….just stop whinging about – ‘The BBC guy didny say this. The STV guy didny say that. The Radio Scotland guy didny say whatever…’ just please stop.

Mr Stein won his last ever League Title in 1977 and, Richard Park of Radio Clyde rushed to congratulate him and Mr Stein said -“We see you rushing past here(CP) every morning to, go wherever you go to so – just continue on yer way.”….or words to that effect.

Why can’t we have a Celtic supporter with clout, not a plant…to deal with the SMSM with an ‘iron fist inside a velvet glove’ approach?

Off the top of my head….why cant we bite the bullet and get a Hugh Keevins without the shackles – to deal with ‘all’ the clubs media correspondence? Why not???

Is there such a Celtic ‘oracle’ on the go right at the minute who is as, gifted, knowledgeable, dyed in the wool, hurting Tim(like me) who could carry this off and be a, poacher becomes gamekeeper scenario, eh?

Hugh Keevins – to me – has more Celticness about him than, all of the folk who presently run Celtic FC/PLC, so there.

Who knows…he could help recruit Artur Jorge as manager? :)

And, the reason that he has listed over the years all the Celtic managers who should be sacked is, coz he’s a hurting Tim – and so am I.

    A memory or two

On the evening of 5th March 1982 I stood in the Celtic end and watched as Laurie Cunningham took several corners with the outside of his boot!

In midfield, The Spaniards boasted the marvellous Steilike and a moustachioed bloke called Vincente del Bosque, while up front they had the dangerous Juanito and Santilana in addition to Cunningham.

“Get intae them Celtic” cried one guy ” This isn’y a fitba team – It’s the league of nations!”

This was our first European Quarter Final since 1974 and the match boasts some special players with two in particular boasting a little bit of History. Real Captain Pirri and Celtic’s Bobby Lennox had faced one another before — in Alfredo Di Stefano’s testimonial match in 1967 almost 13 years before.

I remember standing there with my cousin Paul, feeling as nervous as a kitten every time they came forward. For our part, it seemed we could not get going at all in the first half and one player in particular was the subject of a certain amount of ire and wrath.

” Hey – You’ve wasted more balls than Elizabeth Taylor, Doyle!”

In the first half big Paddy kept us in it, because Real were good — really good.

Then the unthinkable early in the second half — George McCluskey bloody scores after an Alan Sneddon overlap and shot which their keeper spilled.

Queue — sheer and utter bedlam in the old ground.

    Suddenly we are THE team.

Big Roy and Murdo running midfield:

Danny puts Cunningham in his pocket and never lets him out:

And sweet jumping Jesus, Alan Sneddon runs up the park, crosses the ball and bloody Johnny Doyle scores with a header!

A header! Johnny Doyle: against Real Madrid!

If big Tam McAdam’s goal hadn’t been chopped off we were going to the Bernabau 3-0 up!

    Bloody hell.

Long walk back into town to the Rock Garden in Queen Street.

To hell with the TV Highlights — there were pints to be sculled and songs to be sung.

    What a night ……..

And of course it is all recounted in Caesar & The Assassin……….

I never had you down as someone who would be afraid of the Huns. We will deal with them when it comes around. We will be tough enough. We will also beat them at football. Did you happen to catch them play Dundee United last season? Dundee United must have had 5 wee boys in their team and they were tough enough and beat them comfortably. I would not panic about Sevco. They are making life difficult for themselves. I’m sure Swally is getting them ready for their next game with some banter and laughs today on the training ground. Our manager will be drilling our players and training them hard for a EL game on Thursday. Celtic also have a transfer window to buy a couple and punt a couple. Don;t panic about Sevco. As JOhn Guidetti said before the draw ‘It doesn’t matter who we get they are going down!’

I was in The Celtic End,so to this day canny say if there was much wrong with McAdam’s goal, but there was nothing wrong with Peter Latchford’s display that night. And I counted myself as one of his biggest critics.

Why do you constantly hold up the 1980 riot as a Celtic achievement, rather than for example, the turn-out and behavior of the supporters in Lisbon or Seville?

The riot was a black day in the history of Scottish football and not something to be proud of and boast about.

    Brilliant, just brilliant.

    But, was it not 1980?

I remember being in the Jungle and my mates and I couldny get to our usual spot – the no 9 white exit – at the huns end of the Jungle. 15 or more of us from, Blantyre & Burnbank were clinging onto the huge green pipe that ran along the back of the Jungle wall. I remember seeing all the white hankies being waved as fans collapsed due to fainting coz of the over-crowding. We couldn’t use our tickets as the queue’s to get in were far too long and we’d probably have missed half the game. Effff that. So, the houses at the ‘Rangers-end’ had back gardens – about 10 or 12 – and each garden had a wooden ladder running from the garden-over the wall-into the stadium….I know we shouldn’t have done it but…we did. Still got the ticket somewhere in my late mothers house, or my bros – not sure? Anyway…it was one of the best nights of my Celtic supporting life.
