Pride and confidence the target for Celtic

264

Before Barcelona opened the scoring with a 27th minute penalty, Ferencvaros hit the crossbar and had a goal disallowed for offside; incidents that would make it into a season review DVD around these parts.  Messi & Co. eventually won 5-1, but that gap was half that until the final 8 minutes.

The Hungarians are remarkably organised, but that should not have been enough to remain in the Champions League after they left Celtic Park.

I suspect that both Celtic and Milan have bigger fish to fry this week than each other in tomorrow’s Europa League game.  Milan sit atop Serie A with maximum points from four games and face Roma on Monday.  Celtic’s most important game of the week is in Aberdeen on Sunday.  The domestic league, as always, remains paramount.

The biggest prize on offer to Celtic tomorrow is an opportunity to win some pride back.  Aberdeen will be flying after beating Hamilton last night, a result, or performance, against Milan, will go a considerable way to building confidence in a team that looked short on Saturday.

I missed your Exeter Chef team piece but we seem to be of the same opinion on that stuff.

I was weary last night & what seemed to start off as a reasonably coherent comment unraveled latterly into repetitive vagueness – how it seemed this morning.

I want Celtic to be like some other successful clubs in our whole approach to running a football club.

My comparisons with Hungarian & Danish sides were less to do with current achievements from their clubs and more to do with the professional approach from Ferencvaros & Copenhagen. That got lost in my ramblings.

Every time I get frustrated at some Celtic set back, I keep returning to a central theme:

What is it that other comparable clubs do that Celtic don’t do that helps those clubs be consistent players at the top table in European football?

More – what do clubs with fewer resources than Celtic do to punch so far above their weight?

I used to think that Celtic punched above their weight but that was just a fleeting thought years ago.

Now, I think we punch below our weight & that just shouldn’t be.

It’s no surprise that our most significant period of greatness under Jock followed a prolonged period of abysmal failure.

The term “Kelly’s Kids” seems to me a wee bit of self serving spin by the eponymous Chairman & I’m not so sure that initially he gave sufficient credit to Jock who was the reserve team coach from 1957 to 1960 – the period when they were all recruited & nurtured.

The fact that Bob sold some of these Kelly Kids as soon as they stopped being wee boys that he could control speaks to that for me – Bertie Auld & Pat Crerand particularly.

It’s no surprise that the rise & fall of the much vaunted Celtic youth set up coincided with Jock’s presence or absence at Celtic Park.

Here’s a link to The Celtic Wiki entry about Kelly’s Kids

    http://www.thecelticwiki.com/page/Kelly%27s+Kids

Looking at the fuzzy photo on that Celtic Wiki page it looks like so many of the players behind Jock & Bob are very young – looks like Tommy Gemmell in the 2nd back row. They look like young boys.

Back then, the club’s finances meant we had no choice but to largely recruit & develop young boys – but the magical X factor that transformed that economic necessity into the system that produced both Kelly’s Kids & the Quality Street Gang was Jock.

A stuck in the past board with a diligent but conservative Chairman came up against an ambitious, experienced Celtic man with a vision that was ahead of it’s time.

It’s Back to the Future for me.

( For any Man U fans reading, Coronavirus Pandemic is NOT a new foreign signing).

I hear rumours that the club are delighted as that turns out to be £10million less than Harry Maguire!

mon first season ? last 2 league games ?

  5. Some people on here confuse criticism of the way the club is run with criticism of the club itself.

In 1994 thousands of celtic supporters refused to boycott games despite the total mess the board were making of things. i have two brothers-in-law who refused to join the boycott.

The board treated our club like their family business. Thank goodness there were enough sensible celtic supporters to force change otherwise rangers would have won 30 in a row.

How many celtic supporters on here admit to refusing to join the boycott and who continued to support the old board.

I acknowledge and understand your telling point that it was the absence of CL money that led you to your conclusion about Neil

  9. Thanks for that Cornelius, personally I always thought the name “Kelly Kids” was a play on the “Busby Babes” KK and BB, although Motherwell also had the Ancell Babes at the same time.

I pride myself on my knowledge off all things Celtic but must admit I had never heard of Joe Logan.

Good chance I was at his last game at Boagheid, no a bad reserve side that night.

  10. St Tams – Poco a poco 😀

I haven’t listened back to it again, don’t think he said that today though he did suggest it on Saturday. The big difference today was he did put his hand up and say mea culpa.🙏

And that is something he has not done in recent memory.

The BBs had a different connotation when I was in the Cubs in Castlemilk.

It does make sense though that it was a media led thing in response to ManUtd’s boys.

I enjoyed the TV movie “United”.

David Tennant (McDonald to give him his real name) as Jimmy Murphy was the glue that held it together for me and not Jack O’Connell who played Bobby Charlton.

    ————————————-

When you are less tired, I would welcome your thoughts on that detail.

What do they do more professionally?

Are they consistently better than us or just better this one year, e.g Ferencvaros?

Without the detail of what constitutes professionalism, then the club comparisons fall into the same level of ultimate futility as comparing coaches.

From my view, we need to acknowledge several factors

    1) relative size of the comparative country (Portugal has twice our population, Hungary- almost twice, Switzerland has 8 and a half and only Denmark is close to our size with around 300k more than us).

    2) Standard of competition within each country – Are there any other Hungarian or Danish teams doing consistently well? It is just Basel who have outperformed us from Switzerland. And the Portuguese have 3 strong teams, though Sporting have gone almost 20 years without the title, and a ready access to uncapped Brazilian and S. American talent (as do Ukraine). We can’t even get permits for promising US players.

    3) Sugar Daddy money – Red Bull Salzburg outperform us but have a dubious financail arrangement with feeder clubs and Sister clubs (Leipzig) and a huge sponsor.

Do we want to be a millionaire’s whim? Big financial inputs sometimes work, but for every Abramovich and Saudi Prince who sticks around, there are dubious Russians from Lithuania, Malaysia Chinese men in Wales changing the historical colour of strips, or Au Yeung Wai Kay, who relegated the club he “owned” to win a bet.

  17. I expect Celtic to lose to Milan and drop points at Aberdeen.

I expect us to drop points to Motherwell and Hibs .

    I await the onslaught.

I was attacked on my Twitter and FB for stating that we would lose to Sevco.

I told those that were attacking me to get back to me after the match.

I’ve heard from know one .

Towel thrower ,bedwetter .etc ,etc .

But I fear that the league has gone.

Lenny has lost the dressing room.

Probably though no fault of his managerial skills .

I suspect that he is being asked to manage quite a few players who want away.

I also suspect that he has not been able to sign some of his first choices ,so has had to take what he can get.

    Laxalt being a prime example.

Some people on here confuse criticism of the way the club is run with criticism of the club itself.

== i dont see many criticising Celtic.however a lot of sentiment, and emotion backdated from Neils appointment is getting full volume.by all means criticise, but constructively with your eye on the betterment of our club in mind.

In 1994 thousands of celtic supporters refused to boycott games despite the total mess the board were making of things. i have two brothers-in-law who refused to join the boycott.

==choices eh.and they are still fans i bet.a lot at that time done everything but stop going to see Celtic, they contributed in their own way.The gradual decline(number) was in there when Fergus first produced his stadium plan in1992/3,build it and they will come.they did.hope your back speaking to them.===

The board treated our club like their family business. Thank goodness there were enough sensible celtic supporters to force change otherwise rangers would have won 30 in a row.

==see the answer above.”boycott” was meeja input.Asking people to stop watching Celtic was a good stunt.numbers dwindlin it was evident.the malaise and lethargy all around our club was different in the years running up to 94.

The comparison between this board and wee mickkellysclub is not there.not in any sense.

ps i was at the celts for change official boycott when they counted people in.it was funny as nearly all made the dash in.i was up and down from london at the time.i would say most who boycotted came back for STH in fergus regime.==
