Race-ism, Rogic logic, governance

When Roy Race’s scriptwriters sat down to decide on their weekly football fantasies they would never bring themselves to write what Jack Aitchison went through yesterday.

A scoring debut.
With his first touch.
As the youngest player ever to play for the club.

This is classic (Roy) Race-ism.  To get to the stage of making your Celtic debut as a 16-year-old striker Jack would have to have eclipsed many older players in the youth structure, so he clearly has something about him, but consider anything he achieves in the next five years as a bonus.

With Kieran Tierney (18) and Ryan Christie (21) also scoring their first goals for the club yesterday, there was an air of optimism that some of the development work we’ve invested in recently is bearing fruit. The most important lesson from yesterday in this respect was Tom Rogic (23).

Tom has been at Celtic for over 3 years, which indicated the time it takes to develop a player. He came through long-term injury during that period but he could easily have dropped off the scene a year ago without much fuss. He now looks every inch the modern creative midfield player. What he did to create the chance for Ryan Christie’s goal yesterday was sublime. If you didn’t see it, go look for it.

It takes time and patience to develop players, but the evidence is mounting that we’re good at it again.

Really pleased the sun shone on Ronny’s last day, in every sense of the word. It was a high to go out on after a lot of rainy days, in every sense of the word. I planned to appraise him, and our strategy, after the Scottish Cup semi-final defeat but decided to leave it to the end of the season after his quick announcement that he was leaving. Will pick up with this in due course.

As I walked away from Celtic Park yesterday and pondered the success or otherwise of Ronny Deila’s reign, the thought occurred to me, maybe it’s too early to tell?

Remarkably, over the weekend, more than 500 of you have contributed to a crowdsource project to publicise issues relating to Resolution 12 in The Guardian newspaper, and a business paper serving Uefa’s territory in Switzerland (all without a mention in the main blog).

We are not served particularly well in Scotland with oversight, accountability and governance. It’s important for our society, not just our game, that those who can articulate this situation do so. Read this article for more information, with a link at the bottom to participate.

Players like Christie,Armstrong and McGregor thrive in a pass and move system.

Yesterday we had the best off the ball movement in RD’s tenure.

  3. I was never an advocate of summer football, but yesterday has me thinking.

One reason for my reservations was that it would put us out of alignment with European football and would mean we would lose first team players to international tournaments every other June.

Maybe a wee bit of tweaking to our current set up would suffice?

12 team league to start the season in August and play each other twice.

That would be 22 games which could be easily completed by mid to late December.

    Winter break until early March.

SPFL split to top and bottom 6, beginning in March.

Teams in each section play each other twice providing 10 games to be completed by late May.

This will give us a 32 game season, with time in the “Clausura” calendar to accommodate cup tie weekends.

Players would be available for the Euro and World Cup tournaments and would not be suffering from a long demanding winter season.

Anyone care to shoot it down?

Agree about your suggestion of a savvy Continental boss.

As long as he had a minder initially close to him to iron out the unique “challenges” he’ll face in the Scottish game.

God rest the soul of your Auntie Agnes RIP.

She would have been well looked after in Saint Margaret’s.

  10. A McG is just not good enough for us. PR is 5 times the player he ever was. The gulf in class is substantial….no comparison talent-wise. Aiden just did not live up to what we hoped would be his potential. The stats and facts just do not lie……unfortunately. That he can’t get in the starting line up in a Championship team says it all really. Not for us now.

  11. Personally, I love Bitton and believe he will be real star, sadly it will probably not be with the Celtic. BTW Man. Utd scored a real own goal yesterday.

Thanks Delaney….. Aye she was well looked after…….a credit to the town is St Margaret’s….

No harm was done. We can all get hacked off with things. He has plenty of friends on here.

I like Bitton but this season he has, by his own standards been poor, too slow to release the ball, gets caught in possession too often (remember him losing the ball and fouling Skippy for our only home defeat this season) has the heart of a mouse at times, big improvement needed next season.

Broony as much as I love him just isn’t a very good footballer, heart and soul and effort yes but we have better options if everyone fit.

I wouldn’t like the league to be split so early. Too much randomness.

Would like a longer winter break though.

What about Ross Wallace? He at least does get into the Sheffield Wednesday team.

Not sure we really need any more players in that area mind you.

Here’s why I advocate full summer football.

    1) It gets us in a position where we’re at full tilt in time for the European qualifiers

    2) The weather is warmer if not guaranteed to be dryer, although that’s more likely too (on a personal front both my boys have stated they’d want to keep their STs if it was summer)

    3) It’s the school holidays, again on a personal not I’d be happier about kids staying up for evening games etc.

    4) If we’re being totally realistic we’re unlikely to get past the last 32 in CL, so it doesn’t impact progress there. I accept that’s not necessarily the case for EL.

    5) International tournaments are only every other year and if we’re trying to breed home grown talent, how often are we going to lose more than a few players anyway. Apart from that we could have a summer break those years to accommodate them.

I think it’d be far better to have summer football.
