Race-ism, Rogic logic, governance

When Roy Race’s scriptwriters sat down to decide on their weekly football fantasies they would never bring themselves to write what Jack Aitchison went through yesterday.

A scoring debut.
With his first touch.
As the youngest player ever to play for the club.

This is classic (Roy) Race-ism.  To get to the stage of making your Celtic debut as a 16-year-old striker Jack would have to have eclipsed many older players in the youth structure, so he clearly has something about him, but consider anything he achieves in the next five years as a bonus.

With Kieran Tierney (18) and Ryan Christie (21) also scoring their first goals for the club yesterday, there was an air of optimism that some of the development work we’ve invested in recently is bearing fruit. The most important lesson from yesterday in this respect was Tom Rogic (23).

Tom has been at Celtic for over 3 years, which indicated the time it takes to develop a player. He came through long-term injury during that period but he could easily have dropped off the scene a year ago without much fuss. He now looks every inch the modern creative midfield player. What he did to create the chance for Ryan Christie’s goal yesterday was sublime. If you didn’t see it, go look for it.

It takes time and patience to develop players, but the evidence is mounting that we’re good at it again.

Really pleased the sun shone on Ronny’s last day, in every sense of the word. It was a high to go out on after a lot of rainy days, in every sense of the word. I planned to appraise him, and our strategy, after the Scottish Cup semi-final defeat but decided to leave it to the end of the season after his quick announcement that he was leaving. Will pick up with this in due course.

As I walked away from Celtic Park yesterday and pondered the success or otherwise of Ronny Deila’s reign, the thought occurred to me, maybe it’s too early to tell?

Remarkably, over the weekend, more than 500 of you have contributed to a crowdsource project to publicise issues relating to Resolution 12 in The Guardian newspaper, and a business paper serving Uefa’s territory in Switzerland (all without a mention in the main blog).

We are not served particularly well in Scotland with oversight, accountability and governance. It’s important for our society, not just our game, that those who can articulate this situation do so. Read this article for more information, with a link at the bottom to participate.

I saw that interview with Shaun Dyce as well and he was surely hinting at at least 50k a week wages for Joey Barton ? Could they even come up with half of that ? and why would you take a massive pay drop to play for a club you have no ties with, I read a tweet from him saying he was a Celtic fan, if they can afford him then something stinks as they’ve only got season ticket money to run the entire new club for a full season.

Had a great day yesterday it was like the football Ronnie originally promised us, great performances from most of the players and very chuffed for the youngster. However apart from the odd bit of brilliance like the goal yesterday I don’t see Rogic as a player I’m afraid, he kills the game by giving the ball away and constantly getting caught in possession. He wants too much time on the ball and takes too many touches. I’d much rather see Mcgregor, Christie or Allan get a chance to play that position. When we played one touch yesterday it was a joy to watch and very effective.

Taking into account there was a slight meaningless to it. What from yesterday made you think we need McGeady in the team?

What position would he play in. Bearing in mind that for much of the time he was with people were crying out for him to be played in a more central role?

Now as you can no doubt tell, I don’t think he’s required but I’m genuinely interested in reasons for him to come. Who would we drop to accommodate him?

  13. I love it when lots of people point out an error in the text of Paul’s main article, pulling his leg, and he just corrects it and says nothing.

So just where is Aiden Tierney mentioned?

    Hehehehehehehe.

  14. While I accepted Deila was never going to do since the 2nd defeat from Molde I must admit I was surprised to feel slightly emotional and sorry for Ronny yesterday. It’s a shame it never worked out for him as I really wanted him to succeed. However if you think could you have in any confidence in Ronnie getting you through next seasons CL qualifiers you aren’t long in thinking we are better off without him.

While you can point to the few successes in turning round or developing players careers such as Tierney, Rogic & Griffiths you can’t help feeling some were more by accident than design, especially in the case of Griffiths. Also the amount of players who went back the way under RD vastly outweighs the positives.

    Danny Ings? Jesus wept.

I wouldn’t have Kranjar, Cummings or Dorrans at Celtic so I wouldn’t be too bothered.

As for Barton, it would be a good move for them. He’s particularly good at delivering the ball from corners and set pieces. Would be good for the huns as they get plenty of free kicks!

Enjoyed reading Paul’s article and I endorse all that he says.

It was a great day in many respects yesterday and many people have described it much better than I could, e.g. the players, the performance and touchingly the Syrian refugees; so I would like to write about another, in my opinion, equally important aspect.

We pride ourselves in rightly proclaiming that we are ” a club like no other”. This season, despite some bitter disappointments, we have proved it again.

To see a good man like Ronny being able to retain all his dignity and receiving respect and genuine warmth from the supporters on his final day, was quite emotional for me and those in my immediate company yesterday.

There were a few ‘trigger points’ throughout the season when another board of directors, another main shareholder, another CEO, could have bowed to pressure and justified sacking the manager. The latest being almost exactly one month ago after the defeat in the semi-final at Hampden. That there was no ‘knee jerk’ brutal action is to the eternal credit of our much-maligned(on here anyway) guardians of the club.

In ‘The Celtic Song’ it says “we don’t care if we win, lose, or, draw, darn the hell we care”; unfortunately in a sometimes bad-tempered and I must say panic-stricken season, this has not been the case.

Ronny goes out a winner with his head held high. I am sure that he and his family will treasure the moment and the record of it will be played many times in their households.

I thank all at Celtic for taking the risk, ignoring the clamour, and allowing this to happen. I’m sure that we are all better for the experience.

It proved to me that those charged with the running the club are not only honest and professional, although not always infallible, but possess even more important values such as respect for a fellow man and common decency. I sincerely hope that those who are proposing to boycott season tickets agree with me and pause to think again.

I feel better in myself for having been there yesterday. In many ways it was even better than some of our great European nights; why?, because we just didn’t just ‘talk the talk’ about being “more than a club”; we ‘walked the walk’ and acted it out. Hail Hail

Although I do seriously doubt the the Sevconians can afford Barton by any legal means. If they however prove me wrong I will renew in spite of my feelings toward PL and the current regime.

    It’s media talk and bluster.

    galacticos?

Celtic’s budget is in a different league ( but needs to be spent more wisely ) under the next manager.

  25. Aiden McGeady is yesterday’s mhan who never really made it elsewhere. Can’t hold down a place with Sheffield Wednesday. We should not be looking there. We don’t need him. Not good enough.

  26. Joe Filippis Haircut on

The new manager when he joins us will have at least 6 strikers on the books Scepovic Cifti Richards Cole Stokes and Griffiths. We will know if there has been a change in policy if big Peter doesnt sell Griffiths but we have a large number of players who do need moved on. H.H.

    Tallybhoy….

Well we won the league, according to the huns they are tainted titles as they weren’t involved

*Hmm just like 1971 when they were 4th 15 points behind with the sheep and St Johnstone above them.

Or the following year when they were 16 points behind and joint 3rd with the Hibbees behind the sheep again

1974 they were 3rd behind the Hibbees again and 15 points adrift of us.

Fast forward tae 1980 when the sheep beat us by one point with the huns again in 5th place but improving as only 10 points behind us.

The next 2 years and we are 1st ahead of the sheep with them joint 3rd with the Buddies and 12 points behind the champions’ respectively.

In the arabs only title win they were 16 points behind them and 4th with us and the sheep finishing 2nd and 3rd respectively.

Step forward the sheep for the following 2 years and they finish 15 and 21 points adrift 4th behind us and the arabs, joint again with the Buddies for the latter.

Then there was that glorious year of 1986 when they finished joint 5th with the City of Discovery team 15 points behind the leather belts and below the jambos, arabs and sheep.

Up next is the “happy birthday” year when by this time sourpuss is throwing money about like a man with no erms the still finished 12 points adrift and in 3rd behind the jambos.

All of the above were with 2 points for a win.

Then the ebts kicked in and their demise as well, however, even in their final year before they were liquidated we still managed to be 20 points ahead of them.

So all this scheitd about tainted titles is just that scheitd as even with them in the same division as us, we, the sheep and arabs still managed to win well in front of them and although they’ve always had a hand from the officials it was not until they “appropriated” funds from the taxpayers that any real success, and not in Europe incidentally, came their way.
