Rangers director on stripping of their titles

292

I continually read misleading interpretations about the alleged second contracts at Rangers.  Rangers may, and almost certainly did, insist at the First Tier Tribunal that the letters in question were not contracts.  This point is important to the tax authorities but completely irrelevant to the football authorities.

The SPL specifically:

“Impose a prohibition on players receiving payments for playing football or participating in an activity connected with football except where such payments are made in accordance with a form of contract approved by the SPL and require that all such contracts are submitted to the SPL within 14 days of being entered into”.

The SFA require:

“All payments, whether made by the club or otherwise, which are to be made to a player solely relating to his playing activities must be fully recorded within the relevant written agreement with the player prior to submission to this Association and/or the recognised football body of which his club is in membership.”

So, for clarity, side arrangements do not have to be part of a contract before they become subject to SFA and SPL regulations, but “payments… connected with football” or payments received by a player “solely relating to his playing activities must be fully recorded”, otherwise the player has been improperly registered and his team would be awarded a 3-0 defeat for each game he played.

The Sun’s landmark story on this issue claim’s one Rangers player was due £1200 appearance money per game, clearly “connected with football”.

In point 14 of his statement today, concerning Rangers being stripped of their disputed titles, Dave King said, “I am absolutely confident (now that I have a good sense of the true position) that this will not happen”.

The “true position” will be established by SPL inquiry.  If they have all letters  issued to players of the kind produced by The Sun, or given as evidence to the First Tier Tribunal, Rangers have no case to answer, but we have to wonder, if this is the case, why the inquiry?

I note the swift and robust defence issued by Sir David Murray against allegations levelled by former college Dave King.  I also note the swift and robust defence issued by Sir David Murray against allegations levelled by former college Hugh Adam of side-contracts being issued to players.

Wait a minute, Sir David hasn’t uttered a word about Hugh Adam’s allegations!

I would like to be the first to congratulate St Johnstone on winning the League Cup in season 1999-2000.

Your comments were passed to the Head of News, who has asked that I forward his response as follows:

“The SPL league table was not updated to reflect Rangers’ deduction of 10 points due to a technical error with our programming which has now been rectified”.

  3. This whole saga is getting like the tv show “lost”. Compulsive viewing at the start leading to needlessly convoluted in the middle and a WTF type of ending…signs are good though, nobody interested in a second series or a re-make.

Fellow internet bampots – Here on the internet we are not held to the same high standards of behaviour as the UK’s tabloid press. We can therefore engage in speculation, supposition and a whole heap of other mean and nasty things that would make uncomfortable reading for your average bear. To which end, I though I would conduct a small thought experiment.

Just suppose for one minute that Rangers (turnover £30m, expenditure £45m, debts £100m) were unable to meet its liabilities and liquidation proceedings were initiated. I know, wildly speculative, presumptious and dependent upon a host of zany assumptions. However, let’s just imagine for one moment that this happened. In such a scenario, I am led to believe, Rangers 2012 would apply for membership to the SPL. Apparently this logical continuation requires no wild speculation or zany assumptions and therefore automatically follows from the liquidation of Rangers FC. But what would need to happen before Rangers 2012 could apply for membership to the SPL?

    1. Someone needs to set up a new football club.

    2. It must be established to the comfort of the courts that this football club is not Rangers, and is therefore not liable for Rangers debts (the so-called “shaft the creditors” step).

    3. This football club must appoint Fit & Proper directors, i.e. people who have not been directors of Rangers in the last 5 years.

    4. Despite having no source of income or track record in the game, the club needs to source and agree contracts with sufficient professional footballers that it could satisfy the SFA and SPL that it could fulfil fixtures.

    4. The football club would need somewhere to play. Perhaps it could buy Ibrox from the liquidator. Or perhaps not. Who knows?

    5. The football club would need backroom staff and management, despite having no source of income or membership in any footballing bodies.

    6. The football club would need to successfully apply for membership of the SFA having never played in a single match at any level of amateur or junior football.

    7. The football club would have to do all of this before the SPL fixture computer starts churning away, probably some time in June.

That is starting to look like a lot of presumption, supposition and all round zaniness.

It’s obvious from the St mirren statement that “the best interests of Scottish Football” = the quick demise of the huns.

  25. You will remember that Celtic donated £10k to PoppyScotland appeal in November 2011. Rangers didn’t make a donation but allowed Poppy Scotland to collect at Ibrox. Rangers also sold jerseys with Poppies on with all proceeds going to PoppyScotland. This is what was raised:

Poppy Scotland collected £3920 in donations & raised further £2124 from poppy shirt sales.

So RFC as club provided nothing, their supporters donated just over £6k. Quintesential Brits my behind.
