Rangers improper player registration evidence mounts

1152

More evidence emerged today on how Rangers recompensed players through their Employee Benefit Trust (EBT) scheme in The Sun newspaper, who have a draft contract Rangers offered an unnamed player.  The contract was a letter confirming a six figure payment as well as a £1200 per game appearance bonus.

An accountant told Sun reporters Paul Thornton and Ewing Grahame:

“I have been shown a contract of employment showing how much money players were going to get but also a back letter which I presume that individual has assumed is part of his salary. It seems like a contract.

“If the two documents are handed to someone together, is that seen as being his overall package? If the answer to that is yes then there is a problem because the money that goes into the trust really should be getting taxed because it is his salary.

“The fact it is there as a back letter at all suggests it is dodgy.”

Attention is obviously drawn to the potential criminal consequences of these tax arrangements but football fans throughout the country will be alarmed that Campbell Ogilvie, the man who was general secretary and director of Rangers when the EBT scheme started, is currently president of the SFA and would have been involved in scoping out the secret remit of the SFA inquiry into Rangers, which was asked to report within an incredibly quick two week period.  Ogilvie is also one of the few men the inquiry will report to.

If the allegations in today’s Sun are accurate, Rangers have improperly registered football players for a period of around a decade.  The penalty for playing an improperly registered footballer in any game is a 3-0 forfeit.

When the SFA president is in a position to confirm all of this, the association have all information they require to make a ruling on this, but despite these allegations being widely reported for many months, they have yet to even acknowledge there is anything to investigate.

Can you imagine the scrutiny the Football Association in England’s board and chief executive would be exposed to if this scandal was not being actioned?

I can see a split. Once the institution is dead, the fight for the “soul” of Rangers will begin (if Beelzebub will sell it back, that is).

Whoever owns the fixtures and fittings will be in a strong position to claim to be a reincarnation of Rangers, but what if they don’t appeal to the baser elements? There’ll also be a few who won’t be fooled into thinking that it is anything other than a completely new club.

There’s also bound to be a lot of manoeuvering for position amongst the various Peepil’s Front of Judea and Judean Peepil’s Front organisations (Mingwall etc) wanting to be seen as the carriers of the torch.

    It’s all good!

Our Club’s history is magnificent and is there to be referred to & remembered. All else is redundant. We live in the here and now. It’s one of the things that sets us apart from the nigh-on mediaeval Rankers & their narrow, bigoted, sectarian backward looking ideology.

The point is, that the UEFA excuse about crossing borders, is a red herring ,as, if the case is strong enough, that rule can be bypassed.

It can surely be argued now, that the SFA have a record of acting against our well being and ,possibly, corruptly.

This has affected our business as a football club .

Also, we are operating in an environment which has been shown to be unsafe, both for our staff and our support.

I don’t think that UEFA will be sympathetic, but, I’m sure a case can be made for a safer, faired football environment.

I think the muted celebrations of Forrest and Hoops comes from Neil and the coaches telling the bhoys to focus and be professional, and show the Huns and their bedfellows the meaning of the word dignity.

  7. Regan’s confirmation that the scope of the SFA investigation will include those “side” contracts, oh bhoy.

I fear you are reading too much into the second contract.

Do you have any information to confirm that it was not passed on to the SFA?

It could have been registered as a second sheet of the main contract.

The SFA would not have been worried regarding the tax implications – not their issue.

Closer to home how was SN’s financial arrangements arranged regarding disclosure to the SFA?

What is the custom and practice relating to “image rights” and disclosure to the SFA / SPL or EPL / FA?

the second contract is with a 3rd party , that is the football problem.

Dignity cannot argue to HMRC that the trustees are independent , and then argue to the SFA that they are in fact part of the club.

Dignity is holed below the water, emergency pumping going on!

  15. Big George is the business when talking about Salmon.

    The flag routine is taxing

By George Galloway on Feb 20, 12 (from the record)

Wasn’t it funny to see separatist leader Alex Salmond wrapping himself up in the Union Jack last week with his warm embrace of the “institution” that is Glasgow Rangers?

Salmond brought “weight to bear” on the HMRC (they must have felt that) to go easy on the club, as did the more predictable David Cameron on his Cooks Tour to Edinburgh Castle.

Of course, Eck may have an interest, being a Hearts fan – once defined as being a bigot without the bus fare to Glasgow. They have their own problems with the Revenue.

Perhaps the two clubs could merge, Heart of Midlothian Rangers Club, or HMRC for short.

Once upon a time, political pressure on the taxman was inconceivable in Britain, more an American thing.

    Nowadays, I’m not so sure……

    Any comments on this?

  16. St M’s @ 17.18

I think there a number of questions regarding financial oversight that need to be answered by the SFA.

However the EBT issue with the SFA needs more explanation but it is not at the moment the smoking gun some suggest.

We need to be careful about throwing about accusations based on hope.

There are enough issues at the moment out in the open and these need to be the focus.

At times like this we can play no part in the demise of the TFOD. They do not need our help at times like this.

However we can gather evidence straight from the mouths of others and bide our time.

    It will come.

  17. This is the biggest scandal to ever hit world football

There must be a full independent transparent inquiry

We need to know all about the way RFC was run under the Murray regime

    So many questions need answered

Did the Wee Tax Case not relate to earlier than 2000?

    Who knew about the EBTs?

    What players were involved?

What role did the SFA play?

When this is all added to the current hun woes about CW and who might own Ibrokes and MP – then it seems that the possibility of RFC not playing in any league nextseason must get stronger by the day!

  19. happy with all things celtic at the minute, we have got many young talented players who will only get better as they get older. NL still has a lot of work ahead of him.

think its worth remembering hooper’s only recently turned 23 years old and he will have bad games from time to time, as he gets older this will decrease.

same applys to foster, thomas, mathews, ki, victor, mcgeugh, forrest, kayal, ledley, stokes, bangurra, juarez

guys like; sammy (wideleft), brown, k. wilson, charlie, izzy, commons, lustig and mccourt are a little older at 25 + years and should be showing consistancy

The squad needs trimmed back big time and NL will need to makes sure he keeps bringing in quality young players so that he can keep producing winning teams while our better players get sold on, hopefully no more than 1 or 2 per season

winning the league seems the easy bit, it the ablity to keep winning it thats the difficult part.

The earliest the title can be clinched is 25th Mar at Ibrox.

For that to happen Celtic must beat Aberdeen next week and Rangers must drop points v either Hearts or Dundee Utd (or both). Even 2 defeats for the Huns will mean we need a draw at Ibrox.

Otherwise it’s on to the following weekend v St Johnstone.
