Reality is a different country

1769

I was asked a cracking question last night: ‘Everyone knows Rangers went into administration on 14 February 2012, but do you know what date they came out of administration?’

Can anyone guess? This is the material Cognitive Dissonance is made of.

Duff and Phelps did an incredible job. Had they stuck to Whyte’s plan, put a fait accompli to the SPL, with a matter of days to decide, ‘Our Hero’ would still own the ground, the club and would still be exalted by those who initially crowned him ‘Our Hero’, before the term became a weapon of irony.

We got a further glimpse into the goings-on at Cardiff before popular and successful manager, Malky Mackay, was sacked.  Chief exec, Simon Lim, while commenting on the £30m loss the club made last season, as a Championship club, spoke of the signing of 20-year-old striker Andreas Cornelius for £7.5m, from Copenhagen, with a £45k per week, 5 year contract, somewhat more than the £6k he was previously coping with in Denmark.

Earlier this month Malky said, “What I said at the time still stands. £7.5m was our record transfer at the time but a hit-the-ground-running centre-forward in the Premier League costs two or three times that and every team in the Premier League are striving for someone like that.”

There you have it, £7.5m is not enough to buy a hit-the-ground-running centre-forward, you’ll need two or three times that! In England, reality really is a different country (this is not me getting involved in the referendum debate, before the nationalists start trolling me again).

English football is broken in ways it is increasingly difficult to fathom. Only the persistent annual losses and ballooning debt figures offer a glimpse into what the future may hold.

Our namesakes, Belfast Celtic, withdrew from league football shortly after their players were attacked by a mob following the final whistle at game against Linfield on Boxing Day 1948. Star man, Jimmy Jones, died yesterday. The then 20-year-old was thrown over a wall and out of the stadium, breaking his leg in the process.

That was the end for Belfast Celtic but Jimmy recovered and is the Irish League’s all-time top goalscorer.

Gordon 62 hope you’re well. I think fergus was a football man but was also a pragmatic businessman not like others who chased a dream and it killed them off..

  2. Makes me sad to see all this division on here and social media. Just want all Celtic fans to unite and get behind the team We have had a great chance to be out of sight from the manky mob ,but we are self destructing. All I want is to see is a strong team and club I have no interest in politics or what should be sang or not ,for a lot of people faithful through and through I think not.

    That’s actually a good question.

One of Brother Walfrid’s close associates was Pat Welsh, a man who arrived in Glasgow from Ireland as a Fenian activist on the run around 1867. The story of his connection to the Maley family is an interesting one and stretches back to his activist days in Ireland or at least to his escape from there. However Welsh only came in contact with Brother Walfrid as a parishioner in St Mary’s so no conclusion can be drawn about how Walfrid felt about Welsh’s previous experience. Brother Walfrid’s track record does not give any indication of nationalist leanings. Still, a good question.

I’m sure your question was rhetorical anyway so excuse my pedantry.

Great shout! And lets sing tomorrow, a few rebs songs would also be good.

I think your blatant support of the Plc misses the point of why we are not out of sight from the Manky Mob……They will be breathing down our necks soon and the board will be happy again.

    Count me out.

I like some others on here were at the CSA

meeting in the London Rd SC when Tommy Burns

spoke very candidly of his relationship with Mr McCann.

Tommy used the phrase managing with ‘one hand tied behind his back’.

It has always stuck with me.

There will always be division, that we can never get away from.

Faithful to who, the team, the club, the players, the manager, the PLC ?

They are all intertwined, some have no probs with any of them, others have probs with a couple etc.

All I know and understand is appeasement doesn’t work, and imo that is what is killing our club presently.

For all I hate, and I do hate thems, and all they stand for, and I make no apologie for that, they always stood up for their supporters come what may, we do the opposite, maybes if the suits stood up and were counted now and again, they could connect a tad easier with their customer base, cos to them that’s all we are.

They imo are the reason we are not as united as we could be.

Gordon 64 I wonder if that statement eould be as apt today with oyr present manager . He has his faults but he is learning as he goes and we are on that journey with him.

Cheers. No point in singing about knowing your history if you don’t try and find out a bit of it.

Also I’m an in curable pedant. ;-)

  13. Another interesting thing, no that many years ago in the grand scheme of things, mid 1800’s there was more anti Catholic societies in Glasgow than there were Catholics.

This has got nothing whatsoever to do with a song about the Hunger Strike, a song that is perfectly legal by the way – you can download it on iTunes or buy it in HMV.

This is just another vindictive attempt to target and criminalise the Celtic support, from our historical enemies.

What’s to stop them deeming the singing of the Celtic Song to be a criminal offence?

They could do this in the morning, sure they are just making these laws up as they go along.

Feckin relentless they are, it never ends.

I’m coming up to Glasgow next month to see my auld 83 years da.

As usual, this will involve taking in a home fixture at Paradise, reminiscing of how he used to send me down the front of the Jungle with the other weans to watch the greats like Jinky and Murdy. The songs were battle anthems that made the matchday experience so memorable.Oh,the fitba was rather good, too.

Know what?……..This is the least I have ever looked forward to going to watch the Hoops in Lawell’s sanitised stadium………..Hope the auld yin still enjoys it though!!

    Our current board are scattercash

    compared to Mr McCann.

I recall the day we were waiting to sign

Andreas Thom and Mr McCann was not willing

to agree to his wage demands.

Tommy Burns said to Feargus you go out there

and tell them we are not signing him.

Feargus reluctantly agreed to the deal.

  19. 16 roads - Wee Oscar the Celtic warrior. on

    The futility of it all.

Far from defeating us, the majority of the Celtic support has become galvanised and united once again.

That’s what inevitably happens when we are under attack.

When are they even going to learn, the fools?

Well you can-albeit at the 2nd attempt!

Brother Walfrid is an interesting character and well worth reading up further on!

An apt persona to be the founding father of our great club.

Delaneysdunkey it was down to the shambles and typical celtic shooting themselves in the foot we stop them from winning ten then we see our most successful management team in a decade leave immediately talk about taking away the good. Thats why I displayed my displeasure but time has left me able to appreciate what fergus did for us and the club imo…

  23. 16 roads , I get that but I don’t understand what some people want the club to . Do they come out and say we defend the right for our fans to sing IRA songs look at what has happened to our manager over the last couple of years . It’s alright for people on here to say do this and that but would they come out and say it in public.
