Regional League concept gets an airing

257

Interested to read that “issues, such as the Regional League concept” were discussed at the 29 club European Club Association meeting, held at Celtic Park yesterday.  12 of the 13 nations present would all benefit from the regionalisation of their leagues, while Wales (and England) already participates in a regional league.

We’ve seen a few campaigns similar to this – with the objective of delivering Celtic out of the confines of Scottish football, but this approach is different.  It seeks to build an alliance with similarly disenfranchised clubs across the continent.  The Austrians, Czechs and Slovaks would benefit from playing in Germany, the Scandinavians would benefit by grouping together, while the former Yugoslavian teams have long acknowledged the merits of resurrecting a Yugoslav-regional league.

I was a wee bit surprised that the “Regional League concept” discussions were acknowledged.  I heard they’ve been on-going for some time but no one wanted to discuss in the public domain.  This will have been a considered comment, designed to move the debate beyond those present at the meeting.

Many thanks for the tremendous response to our auction appeal to build a fourth school kitchen for Mary’s Meals in Malawi.  The kitchen will be at Chibwata Primary School in Dowa, which has 909 children enrolled.  Will bring you more details when I have them.

The auction is for two debenture hospitality seats at the Inverness game on Saturday, courtesy of Club sponsor, Magners.  It closes Friday morning, so keep an eye on it here.

Linda Croker has asked me to pass on her sincere thanks for all the support received for Sean’s Trust and the memory of St John Doyle from the CQN community. I know the last year has been enormously difficult for the family but your many small gestures have meant a lot.

  1. We should offer Guidetti a 4 year deal with an annual loyalty bonus of £1.25M. Payable only at the end of each full season.

The accountant when I was there was. There was another one, can’t remember what his role was middle tier anyway.

  4. Re John Guidetti –

The young man is almost 23 years old yet he is still not in the Swedish National squad.

This is through the combination of him having suffered an awful injury, but crucially, also because he has not had much first team football.

He has tried both Stoke and Man City in the EPL and not got game time.

If he is to progress, he knows that he needs to play. I saw an interview with him on YouTube on a Swedish chat show where he was basically saying that he wants to be the Worlds best player and that, although he may never achieve it, by having that goal he will always strive to improve.

I do not think the prospect of spending time on an EPL bench will appeal to him. He understands that wherever he plays he must be a regular and that gives us a shot.

If we get him nailed down, I’d honestly believe that we have the best 2 strikers we have had since Sutton and Bellamy – although I appreciate an argument could be made for McDonald and JVOH……

    Is this boy Ronaldo?

A loyalty bonus? Do we give that to all the players?

No way will we change the structure for Guidetti.

We have a player that I suspect will easily fall into the £5M if he continues to be successful with us. If we want to even have a sniff at signing him on a Bosman we’ll need to offer him something that at least comes close to what he might be getting offered from down South.

£25k/week + plus his bonus at the end of the season takes him to £45k/week+.

Or we spend £5M on a player willing to take £25k/week and hope he’s as good.

Guidetti was ‘poisoned ‘ by a piece of chicken at a party with his girlfriend which led to a strange debilitating condition which left him unable to even feel his right leg for months.

Not an injury but a virus.

If it wasn’t for this injury he wouldn’t be here. He scored 20 in 23 games for feyenoord. I can see him scoring 30 this season for us. I can see him propelling us into the CL.

it’s strange these days – we talk about selling players 10 times more than buying players.

On when TRFC can play I’m Europe.

If they enter the top tier that will be in season 2015/16.

If they get a qualifying place that will be 2016 say May.

They will be assessed for a licence at 31st March 2016 by which time they will have uninterrupted membership of SFA as UEFA define it from Aug 2012 ie over 3 years.

So I reckon they could be in Europe for season 2016/17.

Pithy? Well, it’s certainly substantial and meaningful.

That said, it’s pinned to the wall because it’s far too long to go on a bumper sticker.

  15. Timmy 7 – Plenty of nice places North and South of Valencia, really depends on your own preferences. You say you are visiting in summer, well if that means July or August then all of the Costa towns will be packed with holidaymakers.

During the summer Denia, my hometown, has a huge influx from Madrid and Valencia as well as from France, Switzerland and the UK. It has a dcent-sized town centre, a thriving Marina and Port (ferries to Ibiza, Formentera and Mallorca) and about 15 miles of sandy beaches.

Javea, next door, has a much higher Brit ex-pat population and is a really popular family-holiday destination. It’s beach is a lot smaller than Denia’s but it is much better served by bars and restaurants and more child-friendly. Traffic gets pretty congested though because almost everyone heads to the same bit of beach (the Arenal).

Moraira and Calpe, a bit further South, are much of a muchness. A bit more built up and with smaller beaches. Then there is Benidorm – everyone knocks it but it is probably Spain’s busiest and most succesful resort. Home to a good CSC too.

If your priority is to relax on a beach, there are plenty in and around Valencia itself which might suit you better.

  16. Looking forward to tonight’s game. Thistle try to play good football so should be a good game. Hope Ronny doesn’t make too many changes to the starting eleven.

If the manager wants to try different players or formations he’d be better doing that in the league because we know that over 38 games we will come out on top.

Part of NL’s problem with Cups was he tried to use his squad in cup ties and we often paid the price.

Play our strongest eleven in Europe and in cup ties this season, rest players and use the squad in league games.
