Rest precious limbs at Tannadice

608

Tomorrow is match day 5 of a 38 game Scottish Premiership league programme, and although there’s a possibility we may find ourselves five points adrift, the result from Tannadice will have absolutely no bearing on our season.

Celtic must weigh up the needs of squad fitness for the next four days, concluding with the visit to Malmo on Tuesday. We have some precious limbs attached to Virgil, Scott, Stefan (J) and most of all, Sugar Ray Griffiths. I strongly recommend all are rested tomorrow. The consequences of any of these players being injured for Tuesday is not worth contemplating.

It was considerably reassuring that Qarabag, who Celtic eliminated in the last round of the Champions League, won away at Young Boys of Berne last night. Any team winning in Switzerland have earned respect.

It was just as reassuring that Malmo’s last round opponents, Salzburg, went down 2-0 to Dinamo in Minsk. It’s difficult to determine comparative strengths this early in the season, but some people may have overestimated Salzburg and underestimated Qarabag,

We’ll find out on Tuesday.

Well done to all concerned with the Jock Stein Charity Match, which takes place on Sunday, 6 September, at East End Park, Dunfermline, in aid of Celtic Foundation and Pars’ Foundation. Alan Stubbs, who will be wearing the hoops one more time, said, “The thing about Celtic is that it’s a fantastic club, both when you’re there and when you’re not, and that’s a testament to the fans”.

Best of luck for the season, Alan.

British Champion boxer and Celtic fan, Scotty Cardle, is also playing, as is X-Men star, James McAvoy. Details here.

  3. Noted the difference between Deila and Warburton when responding to comments from opposing team.

Stubbs said: it’s easier to manage when you have money to spend and can buy players to improve your team. (Seems factual to me)

Warburton: other managers should keep their mouth shut and concentrate on their own team. (Bit of an overreaction IMO)

Malmo keeper: Accusing Celtic players of being ‘pigs’ and ‘children’

Deila: We don’t respond to low-level comments like that. It’s not the Celtic way to do that.

  4. No fear about young ones getting a chance, that is how they get to show their stuff and become the players we hope for…

PS get oot yer scratcher TTT we’re waiting.

  7. I seldom disagree with Paul’s excellent commentary, however on this occasion, I must.

I believe that, barring injuries, we should field our strongest side against United – the possibility of two crucial defeats in three days is not a prospect that Ronny could be relishing – win today, and let Tuesday take care of itself.

i don’t believe that we will go through against Malmo, I hope to God that I’m wrong – just like the semi against ICT – slackness in the first-half (leg), will haunt is in the second-half(leg) – as against ICT, we may not finish the game with eleven on the field – it will be fraught!

  8. RIP Betty.

Strongest team for me the whole team still need game time

  10. Gordon J , normally stop to read your posts and that’s how I noticed your comments at 0959.

However, this time I disagree that is the type of match we need at moment.

Last 2 games we have been a good few lengths in front and then been pegged back. I would like to see us challenged and overcome some difficulty. Perhaps coming back from losing the first goal or needing a late winner. Something that requires a game full of desire, good organisation and commitment. I think this would help the players overcome any mixed emotions that reportedly came out the dressing room after Wednesday.

Jackie is sure to have Dundee Utd up for it and I think its what we need and would be good preparation for Tuesday.
