Ronny Delia Man City connection, where he could end up as coach

241

New manager of New York City, Ronny Delia, knows how to land a big job. He won a miracle Norwegian title with Stromsgodset and won two Scottish Premierships and a League Cup in his two years at Celtic. Since then, he has managed Valerenga, where he has not achieved anything notable.

He first came to Celtic’s attention as a potential assistant manager before being offered the top job. He delivered the obligatory titles at Celtic, and got unlucky in a few cup competitions, but conceding a late goal at home to Maribor, a debacle against Legia Warsaw before finally losing out to Malmo for a Champions League place cast a shadow over his time here.

There’s lots about the business model of the MLS I don’t get, but the move from having David Villa being managed by Patrick Vieira in 2018, to Ronny managing Gary Mackay-Steven in 2020 looks like a club beginning to live within its means.

New York are owned by City Football Group, the parent company of Manchester City, who Ronny knew prior to his appointment at Celtic.

Ronny is a clever man, he will be a better manager now than he was when he arrived in Glasgow in 2014. If he does well in New York, there’s a good chance he will end up somewhere in the Manchester City coaching setup.

Yes -Yogi missed a one on one.Think Celtic might have got caught up in the hype that followed beating Leeds twice. The Scottish media certainly underated Feyenoord..Circumstances had led to me going to a family wedding in Rotterdam which coincided with an opportunity to go to Feyenoord v Milan.I was seriously impressed..I went to Lisbon in 67 expecting to win .I went to Milan in 70 expecting a hard to call game v a very good team with some truly excellent players.I can still hear those bloody klaxons!

  2. How can some Celtic Fans come on here and make judgements on on at least 3 Players ie Bayo Sheved Arazani the last two having long term injuries Bayo hardly gets time on the park to really show what he can do,Also lets get over the Sevco defeat ,and ill blame Lennon on that defeat ,and to be honest they were all over us in the Betfred Cup again Lennon made some bad decisions,so don’t try and blame some players where the blame lays fair and square with all the Coaches.

  3. SOT

I certainly went to Milan expecting us to win – that’s what made it so disappointing.

  4. David66 – You know how these things work. No bids have been received, as said by NL this afternoon, and there are no quotes from BR or anyone else saying they want OE.

The DR story actually said leicester are looking for a long-term replacement for Vardy but would not look for said replacement until the summer. Could well be OE, who knows? We know he will be sold at sometime this year. That’s a certainty. I would have thought Lyon a more likely destination to replace Dembele who will go to EPL.

  5. TBB and WDH couldn’t agree more.

Young (giant!) Kris may have a comparative turn of pace as he moves out from defence. But nothing like the acceleration and sleight of foot required to inhabit midfield on a permanent basis.

I remember being laughed at in the State Bar in Holland St / I remember being mocked in Tennents Bar on Byres Rd .Why ? For stating that Feyenoord looked to be a better team than Leeds.Way too much Match of The Day scouting – even in those days !

TurkeyBhoy @ 3:24pm – found your comments on PL very refreshing.

I don’t know the guy personally nor do I know the specific responsibilities of his job.

I’m sure he makes the odd mistake but he is part of an apparatus that has delivered unprecedented domestic success.

    BTW – DR, mission accomplished.

Ex Celtic manager with old leading striker interested in Edouard.

    How original

  8. TBB @ 17:08

What about the best of both worlds – play him in a back three, with licence to break forward. He sort of does that at the moment – just ‘firm up’ and incorporate it into our approach – 3-5-2.

We have options wide – plenty in midfield, and with a new striker “Bob’s your uncle”

  9. SOT,

I was living in Holland at the time of the Milan Final. My mate and I tried to speak to Jock Stein when he came to Amsterdam to watch Feijenoord against Ajax.

I was in Milan for the game itself, where the one and only Wim Van Hanegem ran the show. (He destroyed Milan too.) It was to warn Jock about him that we wanted to speak to Jock. One of the finest midfield I have ever seen.

  10. Lawwell will be overjoyed if Brendan comes in with a £30m bid for Eddie.

Another £30m in the bank and he can blame Brendan.

And many celtic supporters will fall obediently into line.

Eddy will be sold,if Eddy wants to go.No ones fault.Instead we should be complimenting PL for putting us in a position to make 21 million in profit. That’s how it works,or am I wrong?.

21 million profit into the bank. Yes that’s the Celtic way.

It will be lovely having so much cash in the bank if we don’t win 9.

Maybe Lawwell will allow us to look at it…..

    100% spot on.

Our board do not give a flying **** for the ordinary supporter.

  13. People throw out figures here and they are often wide of the mark but what matter say it often enough and it just gains general acceptance and more people chime in using the accepted figures. Not sure how many times I’ve read that failure to qualify for Group Stage Champion’s League cost us 40 million, or we have 30/40/50/60 million in the Bank. Obviously Pedro is a prime target so I had a peek at a couple of sites just to see the score,

First of all Pedro joined in 2003 in the 16 years up to 2019 we won the SPL 12 times to the Huns 4.

Price of Football tells me that in the 15 years up to Oct 18, his cumulative earnings amounted to 11,320,000 also it is reported that Arsenal tried to poach him at earnings of 4 million per annum & he knocked them back..

In 2019 he earned 3.55 million of which 2.3 million were a combination of his previous 2 years bonuses,

Now the great Desmondo came to the party in 1995 where he bought 13.8 % of the Company for 4 million.

At the time he underwrote another 4 million. Over the years he increased his investment to 34,9% of Company.

Desmond claims to have been a Celtic Fan since he was a young boy and claims he would not have invested at that time had it been any other Club.

He also stated if some Investors came in who had great plans for the Club and if Desmond felt it was to the benefit of Celtic then he would sell his stake to them.

Last point on Champion’s League issue the figure you get for Qualifying for Group Stage is 15 million, after that it depends on results, if you lose your 6 games your Prize Money is 15 million, obviously if you fail to make Champion’s League your losses are reduced by your Europa Prize Money. Obviously there is also TV & Gate Money for both Competitions & I expect Champion’s League TV would be a good bit higher than Europa but all in all guys who are posting that our loss to Cluj cost us 40 million are talking poppycock.

On cash in the Bank as at 30th June 2019 net cash reserves were 38.9 million

  14. The record have a journalist at the Celtic camp. Neil talks to him every day. Neil could have said in media conference today that it is made up nonsense.

He didn’t. He is playing the game too. He knows lots of clubs will be interested in OE. He knows 30 million or thereabouts will be accepted.

In TV interview, not DR, He said he hopes there is no bid between now and then.

He did not categorically come out and say, DK style, that under no circumstances would he be sold. He could have – he didn’t. He said he hopes there are no bids. knows it is just conjecture. Back pages need their stories.

Until there is a bid there is nothing to worry about.

  15. TIMBHOY2 on 8TH JANUARY 2020 5:25 PM

We signed Bayo a year ago for >£2m

We signed Shved a year ago for £2m

We signed Arazani on a 2 year loan from Man City, well over a year ago.

For whatever reason we can only judge them on their input to the Celtic team.

    HH.

  16. Deniabhoy,

To us supporters Celtic is everything to the vast majority of footballers who play for the Club, it is there job.

I have little doubt that Celtic is sold to the young Dembele’s & the young Eduoards as a stepping stone to greater things. Play for us you will win Trophies, get a huge amount of attention and have European football every year. However the big carrot is you put yourself in the shop window & the big Clubs will come calling.

Eddie will have come to us with a definite career plan, there is no doubt he will move on.

The guy or guys we buy this window will be earmarked as his replacement.

I expect Eddie to see out the season with us but that he won’t be here net season.

That is where we are in the Football Food chain & nothing we can do about it unless we are rescued by a European League.

  17. If we don’t win 9 and drop into the Europa League qualifiers, the majority shareholders like Train and Desmond won’t want to see cash reserves used and the share price fall. Peter Lawwell is only doing his job. Edouard will cover the applicable losses. If Peter has another idea he could find himself being asked to step aside. The company is in saf£ hands.

The above is more or less the words from Greasey Gerrard…

Firstly he has just contradicted himself in the same sentence when bringing up the League Cup final Winner………

Secondly, this is the very same Slippy Stevie who claimed that “Rangers NEVER get any decisions over the years”, after his new club drew with Aberdeen in his first match in charge !

He also claimed after beating Hibs recently, when one of his coaching staff was Red Carded, that ” It will never happen again, I will be having a meeting with all my staff blah blah”…….

Just Two games later….one of his staff is Red Carded at Celtic Park for trying to start a punch up over the CORRECT Ref decision to send Morelos Off……..

    What a Hypocrite !

Ronnie is one of the finest individuals ever to work at Celtic Park. A stand up guy as they say in NYC, albeit a stand-in rather than a stand-out Manager. It is a tribute to him that he has been given the chance to take a bite out of the Big Apple. Special mention to Gary Mackay-Steven, really wish things had worked out for him at Celtic, but to get to play football in New York City for a living can’t be all that bad.

    Is that not hypocrisy ?

  22. CORKCELT @ 18:45

Good post – I don’t have the actual figures to hand, I will get them, however Celtic’s total turnover in the Lawwell years will be around the £1.1 to £1.3 BILLION – his salaryplus bonuses, (your figure £11.6m) equates to less than 1% of turnover. That sounds like value for money, even before we start counting trophies HH
