Ronny Delia Man City connection, where he could end up as coach

241

New manager of New York City, Ronny Delia, knows how to land a big job. He won a miracle Norwegian title with Stromsgodset and won two Scottish Premierships and a League Cup in his two years at Celtic. Since then, he has managed Valerenga, where he has not achieved anything notable.

He first came to Celtic’s attention as a potential assistant manager before being offered the top job. He delivered the obligatory titles at Celtic, and got unlucky in a few cup competitions, but conceding a late goal at home to Maribor, a debacle against Legia Warsaw before finally losing out to Malmo for a Champions League place cast a shadow over his time here.

There’s lots about the business model of the MLS I don’t get, but the move from having David Villa being managed by Patrick Vieira in 2018, to Ronny managing Gary Mackay-Steven in 2020 looks like a club beginning to live within its means.

New York are owned by City Football Group, the parent company of Manchester City, who Ronny knew prior to his appointment at Celtic.

Ronny is a clever man, he will be a better manager now than he was when he arrived in Glasgow in 2014. If he does well in New York, there’s a good chance he will end up somewhere in the Manchester City coaching setup.

Exactly. They’d need to do so a couple of times AND qualify for the CL a couple of times to justify their current spending.

  8. Been off the bike and stuck at home with a sore back these past three days. I don’t normally have the time to watch Netflix as my 7-year-old keeps me off it. Playing lightsaber battles and building lego quite rightly gets priority.

Anyway, a friend has been on at me for years to watch Peaky Blinders. Finished season 1-2 in 3 days, now onto season 3. Some of it is pretty good if you can avoid being too analytical. Thought Sam Neill was brilliant as the NI policeman. That accent, to me, is like fingernails scraping down a blackboard.

We often hear that it’s the hope that kills them. Rather, it’s been the hope that’s sustained them.

For that reason, 9 is pivotal. 10 could be fatal.

Ha, interesting concept! Many other business speculate to accumulate I suppose. But those have a clearer path to unlimited growth. Rangers 2.0 are doing it to stop us. Even the CL spot is secondary for them.

Your comment is not very objective and infers that there was little progress between the RD and BR era- do you really believe that?

Also, the CL comparisons are unfair. In the two years during BR’s tenure when we qualified for the CL we were grouped with Barca, Man City, Bayern and PSG; two groups of death. The WGS/NL groups were far easier tasks.

Scott Hogan had a good scoring record at Rochdale then Brentford but went off the boil at Villa due to injury etc. Damien Duff should know enough about him from the Republic set-up you would think , his current loan spell at Stoke hasn’t went well.

The probability of qualifying for the Champions League is a recurring topic on the blog. Is it every attempt? Every other attempt? Once every three attempts?

I mind I scribbled some thoughts on it a while back, but it’s pretty simple to get a handle on from a betting perspective.

In recent seasons we’ve entered the draw in the first qualifying round, and had four ties to win in order to qualify.

Let’s take season 2018/19 as the example.

We drew Alashkert in round 1, then Rosenborg, then AEK Athens who knocked us out. AEK went on to beat Vidi (Videoton) the champions of Hungary in final qualifying.

While we might be confident of beating any given one of those teams, in order to qualify we need to win all four ties consecutively, and that’s a classic accumulator.

What are the odds of beating each team in isolation? I don’t have access to the actual odds offered by the bookies, but let’s take a look at it using a little experience and intuition.

On current performance, I’d say we’d beat the champions of Armenia nine times out of 10. Maybe even 95 times out of 100. Let’s allow us a 95% chance in this round.

Next up Rosenborg, the champions of Norway, and old pals of ours over the years. What are the odds of us beating them? Pretty good, I’d say, 7 or perhaps 8 times out of 10, yeh? Let’s say 80%.

Then the champions of Greece, AEK. OK, they beat us last time out in the 3rd round, as Cluj did this season, but I’d expect Celtic to beat AEK more often than not. Shall we say 70%?

And finally Vidi, the champions of Hungary. Mind it could have been Young Boys or Slavia Prague or similar. What are the odds of Celtic beating one of these teams? I’d still back us, but I’d be a little more cautious. Let’s say 60%. Reasonable?

So take those odds and run the accumulator….

    0.95 x 0.8 x 0.7 x 0.6 = 32%

In round numbers, that’s leads to an expectation that we’d qualify once every three attempts.

I think this coming season we go into round two directly, so we can take out the 0.95 which leaves us with 33%. The odds are not significantly changed.

The big change comes with getting directly into round 3 or, better yet, round 4.

Dropping directly into round 3 improves the odds to 42%, while getting directly into round 4 gives us a 60% chance of qualifying giving the chances above.

You can play about with the probabilities as you like, but even 3 rounds at 80% likelihood of success (which flies in the face of our experience) in each round gives still just 51% probability of qualifying.

Looking at Bert Kassies’ site, he’s still showing the champions of Scotland entering at round 1, but I’ve got a sneaky feeling that recent results of Scottish clubs in Europe have improved our ranking for next year and we might get directly into round 2. Doesn’t really change the odds though. Scotland would need to jump from (currently) 20th to 14th to make the jump to round 3, and to 12th to get to round 4, final qualifying, to effect major changes to the likelihood of qualifying.

An automatic place in the group stages under the current rules is available should Scotland get to 10th, which seems somewhat unlikely for the time being.

For what it’s worth, there’s my tuppence. Given 4 qualifying rounds, we ‘should’ qualify once in every three attempts.

It’s perhaps a little optimistic insofar as our recent experience might suggests is realistic – Cluj, AEK, Malmo, Maribor, Legia and Braga all spring to mind in recent years.

But then, if you look at our record since we were required to start qualifying in round 2 of 4 (2013), it’s maybe pessimistic. We’ve had seven attempts, and have succeeded three times.
