Rose will cure what ails Leipzig soon

235

I watched Leipzig lose 3-0 to Borussia Monchengladbach on Saturday evening.  It was not the reassuringly bad performance by our Champions League opponents the score line suggests.  Leipzig showed plenty of effort throughout, even when the outcome was beyond doubt.

They were frustrating in attack and porous in defence; a bit like Celtic the following day, but in the Bundesliga, punishment is more acute than anything we are likely to see in Paisley.  Leipzig are a team lesser than its constituent parts.  In time, that will change.  Celtic’s concern with this issue will be over three weeks today, when the second of our doubleheader against them takes place.

We return to action at home to Motherwell, four days before our game in Germany.  Another chance for Ange Postecoglou to rotate the squad?  That’s significantly less likely now than pre-Paisley.  At the same time, Leipzig are home to bottom of the gable, Bochum, who have one point from seven outings.  They could not have handpicked an easier warmup for our meeting.

What is less reassuring for Marco Rose, who took over as Leizig manager two weeks ago, is that like Celtic, the bulk of his squad departed for international duty since the weekend.  He will not get an opportunity to work with them as a group until a couple of days before the Bochum game.  Even that game is unlikely to provide a useful test of progress.

Whatever ails Leipzig, Rose will cure their vulnerable soon.  Celtic have to exploit a team in flux and find two performances in the next three weeks that can define their season.

  1. The proposed deal (not sure if RIFC are still holding it up) between the SPFL and Sky Sports from 2024 onwards, represents, in my opinion, a breach of fiduciary duties by Neil Doncaster. It will take us to 2029 and will amount to around half a £million a week over that period. Doubt if it is inflation proof. Question is can the SPFL do better? Cannot do much worse. Check the TV guide for Friday, and you will see Italy versus England being shown on Channel 4, once an important player in bringing us football from Italy and now, for the next few years back in the picture. Who is to say they wouldn’t offer £20 million a year to the Scottish game? Be interested to watch their coverage and find out their viewing figures. As mentioned in the Celtic report, the CL is being revamped from 2024, we should benefit there. Sky will be paying £500,000 per match on average in the new deal, not chicken feed, but you would only need 50,000 PPV viewers at a tenner per week to match that deal. Achievable? Not if you follow the Paul67/Pete Lawwell/Neil Doncaster model. No

  2. CELTIC40ME @ 8:52 AM,

Well my whole point is the SKY deal is a very poor deal, you are just giving more reasons why we shouldn’t do it. I wouldn’t touch it with a barge pole.

We can negotiate the “- casting” of our TV rights in a very different manner, it must be over five seaons ago organisations like Amazon, Netflix etc were looking at the Sports market.

On here at the time I stated that we should be looking at our Broadcasting content, one suggestion, partnership with a media company in a Beta offering.

Allowing Scottish Football to become state of the art while allowing these companies a proof of concept with relative low risk.

    Where there’s a will, there’s a way…

There are lots of reasons why we shouldn’t do things, maybe if I could keep thinking those up I could get a job with Celtic PLC – let’s say £1,000,000.00 per annum plus bonus – Ange and I think out if the box, think big;)

    Cannot do much worse

They can, much worse. It wasn’t that long ago that everyone was wetting themselves about the Setanta deal. It turned out worse than this Sky deal could ever be.

The only reason broadcasters other than Sky are interested in live football is to get market share. They don’t make money on live football. The traditional broadcasters need to make money from advertising sales and selling content abroad. Channel 4s schedule is full of programmes like your dream holiday home in the sun, and Holioakes. Theyre cheap and profitable. Scottish football would be neither.

  5. CELTIC40ME @ 9:03 AM,

In think increasing our turnover by 90% in three years, even with champions league cash is a little ambitious

It most certainly is, however if you look at it from 2018 levels and saying a 50% increase in six years it should be doable.

The blip between 2018 and 2023 (£100M to £100M) is obviously significant but the industry trajectory would be in line with our aim.

Of course what BACK TO BASICs… asked was how realistic was it? With some specifics. Now the specifics maybe fuzzy and the realism optimistism but if we carry on this growth agenda who knows!?

    In Ange we trust.

Ange is an exceptional football coach but I think it’s a bit of a stretch to imagine him coming up with a better strategy for broadcast rights management.

I’m not giving reasons why we shouldn’t do it. My limited understanding and not having seen anything anywhere that’s a viable alternative leads me to think that we couldn’t do much better, if at all.

I don’t see how, in what is an ultra competitive market, Neil Doncaster would be able to negóciate something considerably better. But I don’t understand that very complex industry well enough to really comment, so I leave it to the experts.

I still don’t understand what you’re getting at regarding “casting” or streaming. How would it work when we only own the rights to our home games and they can’t be broadcast on a Saturday afternoon? I think you’re ignoring who owns broadcast rights and how they can be exploited.

You can’t make a streaming service want your rights if they don’t want them. Amazon have dipped their toes in football streaming but it’s for profile of the business, gaining market share and diversifying. High profile EPL games make sense, St Mirren vs Celtic at 12 o’clock on a Sunday lunchtime doesn’t

It seems like the Sky deal is crap because nobody rise came in with another offer. I’m not sure what Neil Doncaster can do if they aren’t interested.

But if magical thinking going on I reckon

With CL income already included in the 100m, a 50% increase in turnover in 3 years is crazy talk. We’re an established business with limited access to the sort of capital investment that would allow for that sort of increase.

Thought provoking stuff about where we realistically can and cannot grow.

It’s put the challenge facing the club/board into a better perspective for me.

    Regular CL absolutely key.

Excellence (and some luck) in player trading a factor.

Personally if we could sell a whopper every three years and have moderate trading profits the other two? (£5m / £5m / £20m)

I think we’d be doing very well.

The main stand certainly needs a big revamp but can’t see a rebuild. Not so long ago we closed the upper tiers so is the demand for additional 10k seats sustainable. I could see a revamp increasing the corporate hospitality space.

    We had a T/O of £70mill’ish in 2019/20.

That is what happens when you have the Irish Raj / DD asleep at the wheel.

That is what happens when you have a low rent / low energy / 2nd rate property bean counter running the show — stagnation / side lining / increasing irrelevance.

    Not good.

AP has moved us up a gear by his efforts on the park.

He has a growth agenda — both for himself and the team.

    That is good.

If you are playing football the world wants to watch then you will have better leverage over the broadcasters / sponsors. When we start seeing Japanese language adverts at SPL games then we will know we are making progress.

    T/O target — £200mill plus in 2030.

We must be a football group by then.

    Not just a SPL team.

Football has grown exponentially over the past 20 years — we have not been part of that growth.

That it has taken a manager from Aus to show us what is possible embarrasses more than us.

    “Genuine question:-

I know the Celtic trust and the GB called for a merchandise boycott in 2021 after Ange was appointed.

What is the current status of boycott ( If any ) ?”

    ———————————————

I have no idea of the status of the boycott or whether it ever got off the ground but I was worried that the framing of your question might have given the idea that fans were protesting about the appointment of Ange- though I am sure that was not your intention.

The planned protest was about the shambles of the previous season and the lack of communication to fans about events. Here is their joint statement of the time:-

“ith a new era dawning at Celtic, we welcome Ange Postecoglu and offer our support to him and the team in their quest to return success to the club. For the second season running, the Celtic support has committed to backing the team, renewing season tickets in their tens of thousands, despite ongoing uncertainty regarding if, and when, fans might return to stadiums. Regrettably, over the course of the last year this support has often been taken for granted by the current custodians, who have mistreated the fanbase and mismanaged the club we all love.

Whilst there remains understandable anger over the arrogance and complacency demonstrated by the PLC board, we cannot simply continue as normal given the severity of these concerns. We have therefore set out an action plan that allows the Celtic support to demonstrate their full backing for Ange Postecoglu and the first team squad, whilst also holding the PLC to account over their conduct. Firstly, we will hold a rally prior to the pre-season match on the 17th of July to welcome and encourage the team and manager ahead of the upcoming season and to send a clear message that we are putting the board on notice. We will not sit back and allow a repeat of their conduct last season.

Secondly, we ask that fans who share our aims and values opt to keep any money that they would normally spend on other Celtic merchandise or matchday purchases until January, when a review can be held on the club’s conduct. That money can be spent at a later date or people could consider buying shares in Celtic, either directly (subject to taking appropriate advice) or collectively by joining the Celtic Trust.

This review will be based on the following criteria: • Improved treatment of, and communication with, the Celtic support.

    • Evidence of progressive structural change in the running of Celtic Football Club.

    • Ample support being granted to Ange Postecoglu to rebuild the first-team squad to enable our new manager to deliver success on the park.

We believe the criteria to be modest and achievable, and if the requests are met, we would be delighted to de-escalate any protest actions and seek to build positive relations with the club. If, however, we believe there is no evidence of improvement in these areas we will not hesitate to escalate our protest actions further to prevent a repeat of the last year. Whilst we fully accept that we do not represent all Celtic fans, we urge those who share our aims and values to support these measures. We believe that collective action is required to help hold this board to account.

This will likely split the support. Members of the Celtic trust voted through the boycott last week and the other fan groups have backed the move.

There has to be more fan representation and more transparency. Dominic McKay appears to be on his road to doing this but right now some of the club’s supporters and the board are still at odds.”

How, SPECIFICALLY and REALISTICALLY, do Celtic reach that £150m figure?

Thanks AN DUN for your reply to B2b

    —-

To reach that figure,it would be possible imo with a planned a prudent strategy that would see CL qualification 3 years on the trot.

To me we have became a better football club, more efficient in players in/out,in the space of a year we have built a squad of considerable value, that could add to revenue,as long as the calibre of potential signing is of like quality

Unlike AD I do see us increasing ticket prices,in CL whereas the SB will remain per inflation.

Stadium revenue imo can be improved and the match day experience excelled.

The club are opening the new bar, giving another stream of revenue.

The club continue to develop the Celtic way, that I would like to see turned into a dortmund like zone for fans to come and enjoy matchday experience

A programme of continued renovation of all food outlets

The stadium as a conference venue should be promoted more, imo, not just on matchdays, everyday.

I have been to small private conferences and funerals at CP,these are areas to better

There is also the continuing development of barrowfield,a small development there allowing ladies teams and b squash play at a venue that’s our,and all revenue is ours(no ongoing outlays to other club

The merchandise as AD points out is excellent, but just as the Adidas link has boosted on from the previous sponsor we can boost on again so that when in a few years we look back we are 20/25%

Every seasons book holder should have a Celtic catalogue, given each year with a range of merchandise, from strips to rolex, what you can buy that is linked to Celtic, from weans rattles to luxury goods.we have massive potential.A few years back poster 4green fields visited dortmund, said the Celtic shop would be one aisle of the dortmund shop, merchandise bewildering in range, they should be the template for the fan zones.

We need to get the counsel to stop hindering us and use the economic clout being a £100m+ business in a rundown area gives.

    On media/multimedia deals.

What’s wrong with a basic package for ctv to be given with SB? Improving communication with fan and club, wherever they may be on planet.communication with club and fan must always be looking to improve

Let’s look at our structured TV deals, domestically and in Europe? What can we do outside them? What TV rights do we hold for our historical rights to show. Our rights outside Europe and Scotland.again we can look at other clubs in other countries to see how they can oause thee sucking in of all monies into the EPL and stopping it becoming a football NBA,which uefa are weary of,with the influx of US capital into the epl things like top6 breakaway will mean uefa are always going to be on their toes.

There’s always room for growth at Celtic,it may get more technical and sophisticated incorporating fiff rev streams but every £ spent has the potential to be £1.01,

In 1994 when looking at possible income streams a lot that now exist didn’t then,we incorporate them,we improve and we get a little better, tis been that way since we left the hall at St Mary’s,and hopefully Celtic fans not yet born will xarry on the mantle, its for them we build

The 2024 changes to CL I would like more info on in the context of CLTV money, from a games perspective

I am led to believe groups of 8 instead of 4 resulting in 7 home games instead of 3 ,now if 3 games take us to £100m 7 will lead to….?

That’s 4 extra CL matchdays before we qualify.

4 days of having 60k at your door for an epic night

Thanks B2B for asking Q and An Dun for the prompt

Always looking to do a wee bit better
