Meanwhile listen to the new CQN Podcast below, it really is worth taking the time.

This edition features a hard hitting introduction from Paul Dykes on the cheating and also a look back at The Celts for Change Years, which will remind you where we were as a football club in the nineties.

    What a great night.

A couple of drinks, a Celtic victory, a pleasant walk home from the pub, and peace and harmony breaking out on CQN.

    Hail hail.

By time we play 1st leg of Play Off round (15/16 Aug) we will have played 2 league games (Hertz / Jags) and League Cup (Killie) so 3 games better prepared. Another game v Killie before 2nd leg.

If there was ever a time to get an away tie first , this is it even allowing for the heat. No easy draw though, with our recent trip to play Prague friendly (0-0) probably the favoured option

Poland commemorates the Warsaw uprising at this time every year so it’s a massive thing for them.

It’s a bitter memory for many, many Poles that still resonates and hurts. It’s part of their history and something they don’t want the world to forget so I see it as understandable that they bring attention to it.

They will get hammered for it, but will reckon it’s worthwhile I assume.

    Wasn’t Craig Whyte was it?

We are getting short of bodies, if ES has ligament damage that is a long time even without surgery, I know.

Do we play KA or NB there or sign someone, anyone think Moult of Motherwell might do for goals in the SPL?

Please leave my head on if you dont agree

  7. BRTH

Was McLean not the one who made a false accusation (knowingly) at Hampden against the Celtic support?

That sure looked like the actions of one who is anti-Celtic and a deliberate attempt to smear us to a large audience.

  8. I was listening to the Brendan presser. I think his patience is wearing thin with some in the SMSM. He was quite short with Chris McLaughlin. I have never known such a sustained period of bad press coverage on our Club, absolutely everything has been blown up and turned against us. It’s been a difficult few weeks for everyone and tonight is huge boost. We can really look forward now to the weekend and beyond.

  9. Im sure the interviewer was Esplin, who asked if NB could play centre half in the SPL BR said what do you think,he has just played away from home in the Champions League then stupid question. Well done Brendan my hero.

Signing deadline for Play Off round is Monday 7 August 2017 (24.00CET) plus the usual caveat of a wild card of one new eligible player by 24.00CET on the day before the relevant first-leg match (15/16 Aug).

    Any suggestions ???

  12. Of the 5 teams we could be drawn against, how many do you think will want to play us? I suspect none.

  13. Bitton is very comfortable on the ball, usually keeps possession really well. I’m a big fan.

As a third generation Pole, I found the Legia display awesome. Loved it. Then I thought of the 5 million Polish folk who reside in Germany. Their life may be made more difficult in their adopted country.

and the fact that the WW2 victory parades…..deliberately excluded the immense contribution that the Poles made to help end the war…..to appease the Soviets & Western Powers, who didn’t want to upset the détente…..is justified?

If was an amazing tifo with huge significance, but you know UEFA,partial stadium closure coming again I think.

  19. BRTH

    Totally disagree re Rob McLean.

At HT he said the RBK manger must be really pleased with how things had gone so far in the tie. They had barely had a touch of the ball, refused to come over the half way line and we had created two great chances!

His second half comments have already been well covered earlier. His commentary of the goal was so underwhelming neither my wife or I had realised that the ball was actually In the back of the net.

To be fair to him on that point I’m not convinced he was actually in the stadium. It sounded like he was doing a voice over from the studios of BBC Scotland, which would certainly explain his subdued commentary.

  20. Not long in from the backshift and settled down with a refreshment to watch the game as my daughter said she would record it for me…. She remembered with fifteen minutes to go. :(((

She felt terrible, so I told her that I watched the whole game on my phone in work…which I did.. :-)))

  21. WHAT IS THE STARS on 2ND AUGUST 2017 10:41 PM

Nir bitton is a very decent player.

    Versatile also

Great man to have in the squad. Especially for Europe

    …………………

Like James Forrest, I’ve always thought that Nir was a top class player. Politics have influenced his career. Man City were about to sign him but their mid-East Arab owners didn’t want an Israeli. We were lucky to get him. I think he wanted away in January window under Ronny, didn’t get the expected move and went in the huff. He then found he had serious competition for his position and struggled but I have no doubt that he is a top class talent and was absolutely brilliant tonight. At the end of the first half Big Mik ( who I also love) gave the ball away cheaply on the halfway line and Nir brought the opponent down on the halfway line. Total professionalism and absolutely the right thing to do. Great player.

However, what about Jozo? On y passe pas. The ball was not getting past that big guy tonight. Body on the line all night long. A total hero.

  22. the glorious balance sheet on

Well done Celtic, great result and the CL dream is still on.

Special kudos to Bitton – never my favourite player – who was excellent in an unfamiliar position.

There is a major problem with the CL though. Because it’s so financially rigged the same teams invariably progress to the same stages each year and others hit the same glass ceiling each year.

Bad enough when you qualify being certain to get Barca, Milan, Benfica, Ajax every other year.

But now you see it’s the same teams playing each other in the qualifiers each year as well.

Qarabag, Astana, Beer Sheva. Only missing out on potentially drawing Maribor because Legia and Salzburg – themselves no strangers to us – got put out.

Familiarity breeds contempt. Football’s strength is its unpredictability. The CL is offering little unpredictability. Same teams getting to latter stages every year. Same teams getting to group stages. Same teams from the diddy countries playing each other for the right just to be there each year.

The CL is going stale due to the extent to which it is arranged around money.

Sooner or later fans of the bigger teams will get tired of the same old teams and outcomes each year.

How many times have Arsenal came up against Bayern Munich in recent years? Celtic v Barca? Ajax v Barca? Plenty other examples.

The CL needs freshened up. For now it’s like watching Groundhog Day.

Nonetheless I still want Celtic to be there. So well done to the Hoops tonight. Hoping for Slavia Prague in Friday’s draw just for a change.

  23. A few posts regarding what comes next; here’s my interpretation, using Bert Kassies as a source…

Our potential play-off opponents in the Champions’ draw are as follows:

    Apoel Nicosia (Cyprus)

    Maribor (Slovenia)

    Qarabag (Azerbaijan)

    Rijeka (Croatia)

    Hapoel Be’er Sheva (Israel)

If we win out play-off tie, we will qualify for the Champions League group phase as the highest ranked team in Pot 4, with Ajax & Dinamo Kiev’s elimination promoted Roma and Besiktas to Pot 3. However, should any one (or more) of Sevilla, Liverpool or Olympiacos lose their play-off, Celtic would be promoted to Pot 3! (n.b. The highest ranked unseeded non-Champion team is Viktoria Plzen, who have a lower coeff than Celtic.)

Alas, assuming Celtic do qualify, and do so in Pot 4, here are some potential group scenarios to contemplate:

    The Financial unfair play group…

    Real Madrid, PSG, Tottenham, CELTIC

    Sunshine and cathedrals galore…

    Benfica, Sevilla, Roma, CELTIC

Or for a fighting chance of progress…

    Monaco, Sevilla, Olympiacos, CELTIC

    Shakhtar Donetsk, Porto, Anderlecht, CELTIC

Any right thinking German will understand the Tifo; my respect for Germany is huge when I see the way they don’t shirk their responsibility for their history.

  28. Thought just about every part of our performance was good tonight, particularly Jozo, KT and James Forrest.

Excellent game management by BR too.

Wasn’t worried too much beforehand but European games always get the old butterflies fluttering. Salvia Prague for me in the play-off please.

BRTH is correct about Rob MacLean – he follows Ross County first and foremost and has a soft spot for Aberdeen. His son if Celtic daft.

  29. Great result tonight. Relieved more than anything else. Big difference once The Griffalo was on the pitch.
