  1. Remember when people used to suggest that dropping into the EL would be good for coefficients?

We all have our opinions. I thought Lustig was fine.

    your having a laugh.

we a poor european team , to many players picking up un deserved wages , we are a one dimensional unit , and very very poor up front.

I’m glad you make that point.

Bcos I’m tired of the short sighted people, who have been brainwashed by Sky TV and thinks the whole football world / market revolves around England.

You hear people saying,10 million buys you nothing these days… and shit similar to that.

Point being, our scouting strategy (Man City reserves) and spl targets is clearly flawed.

Look at the Salzburg players that you have mentioned. There is talent out there. Unfortunately u need a talented scouting team to find it. That’s obviously an issue for us. As Rodgers scouting team is not fit for purpose.

Great to see you on bro.

Celtic have become poor at playing fitba.

  7. RUGGYMAN-we’re getting a bit emotional here and your thinking players that aren’t good enough are going to be good enough now?

  8. SANDMAN….

Celtic qualified in second that year with eight points. You reckon there’s any chance of that this year or….dare I say it, is this side currently worse than Ronny’s?

  9. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

    Ruggygman,

You don’t know the quality of our scouting system, they could have put an excellent selection of talent in front of BR for al, any of us know, BR selected a few who never got signed, it’s all too easy to blame the scouting and management team. It also suits those who decide on the purchasing strategy and that’s not the scouting or management team.

  10. Big Georges Fan Club - Hail, Hail, Wee Oscar on

Hello, this is WEE BGFC. Ah well, still got three points. If we beat Leipzig home and away we’re in the last 32. We played well mostly but Hendry was mince.

Full respect to Rapid Wien fans – as far as I am concerned, past sins are forgiven. I love the tricolours.

A great day to be a tim.

  11. Why is it such a taboo to criticise Brendan ? Ronny was one outrageous honest mistake away from winning his own treble

  12. Fairhill Bhoy.

No, that’s not the point. I don’t believe for a second that there is mystery quality beneath the starting 11 tonight.

Merely pointing out that it is stupid to persist with Lustig and the likes.

Ralston is raw, and no doubt has plenty flaws. But surely to fck it’s worth pitching Ralston and Morgan etc in to the team. Give them a run. Can’t do any worse tbh

A lot are Ronnie’s team. And perhaps therein lays the problem. Has Brendan been given the resources to build his own team?

  14. Salzburg was always a Hail Mary. Bigger game on Sunday. Not quite giving up on Europa but it’s a big ask.

  15. I thought we did ok in the first half, 1-0 up and with very few decent chances for them, no heroics from Gordon

A bit of perspective, they are unbeaten in 50 games in normal time, including a complete run in the Europa league, where they knocked out Real Sociedad, Borussia Dortmund and Lazio and lost in extra time in the semis. They have a 100% domestic record this season. They are a very good team.

We weren’t out of the game until jamesie got sent off which is a better than most of our recent euro away days

  16. weebobbycollins on

I believe the problem is recruitment…I think Lawwell is worried that Brendan’s signings are a big let down and is not getting value for money, hence the John McGinn saga…Brendan’s body language has changed, he doesn’t look happy…is he for the off come season’s end? Hmmmmmm!

    ……..I think so…….

  17. Big Packy

“so why has it got nothing to do with the coach.”

Not my point at all, far less the jibe about happy clapping.

What I said, in response to another poster, was that it was nothing to do with the coaching.

The Salzburg coach did not out-coach Brendan. There was no great tactical battle. What little there was, was won by Brendan for almost an hour as we kept them out despite their relentless pressing and attacking.

Their players, not their coach, won it for them. That’s what I said – don’t know what you read.

It would not have been any different if we had picked different Celts. Gamboa or Ralston for Lustig would not have done any better IMO. Christie, Hayes, Izzaguire, Simunovic, Arzani, Kouassi and Scott Allan would not have strengthened us. Only Lewis Morgan has an argument for an extended run- the rest are all much of a muchness.

The Salzburg team beat Leipzig in Germany. They outplayed us and deservedly beat us and no amount of Football Manager doodling with subs and tactics by non-professionals will change that.

Might as well be telling your GP about the benefits of reiki and homeopathy.

  18. Imo Europe and the league are our priorities.

Our domestic cup games should now be used to prepare for the ” big 2″

If our ambitions are not further than domestic domination then I have to question our large first team squad and our massive wage bill of >£60m.

I hope we spend big in January, we need new faces onboard, but I can understand the viewpoint that more resources may not translate into better performances.

The question of why teams of similar or sometimes lesser financial standing to ourselves seem so much more tactically aware cannot be avoided.

    HH.

  19. Canalamar…

Re Scouting strategy / system. You are speculating. Ifs, buts, and maybe’s.

I’m stating the strategy based on what has been evident for all to see. Lawell family relations at Man City, added to that the pursuit of Scottish based players. That is what we have witnessed for couple of years now.

It is narrow in focus. And it isn’t working

  20. OGLACH….

You may be right but it’s also worth noting that BR has signed many of his own players – most are injured (constantly) or on the bench.

When BR came in, he improved many of the players he had but his dealings in the transfer market mostly leave a lot to be desired. Dembele was a masterstroke….struggling to think of many more.

  21. AGM should be fun next month but as usual it will be staged managed with only suitable questions from the floor like, how does everyone like the stadium lights, what do you thing of the qulaity of the pitch. Don’t dare question the clubs silience on how we are treated by the SFA.

  22. Ach well they have improved the M8 and they seats at the back of the bus are really comfy…roll on Murrayfield

  23. i'vehadtochangemymind on

I don’t know know where to go from here. We’re not set up for the season. We telegraph what we’re going to do because the team are a year + old. Strength in depth isn’t there because we’ve bought/can only afford projects/works in progress.

  24. Joe Filippis Haircut on

I always wondered why Liverpool gave Brendan the chop when he nearly took them to the English title however,if you track our European results under him it is clear to see he is not in the same league as Klopp or the Man.City boss and they realised that and decided to make a change. Now there can be no doubt domesticly he made a great start with the hoops but he is running out of steam and the team are on the slide. Now some may say its all Lawells fault he didnt get the players Brendan wanted now if that is true a top manager would have walked away at that point the fact that he didnt do that for me shows a lack of charachter. I can see little point in winning the SPL every season only to get humped in Europe. H.H.

  25. I will say only one thing about Brendan,if he thinks Eddy is one of the best players he has had, then Eddy is doing a fantastic job of hiding it..

Maybe if they wake him up more he would improve.

Bye the way,Salzburg are backed by Red Bull.Just look at the improvement in Leipzig since they backed them.Loads of cash, and much better TV money than we get.

  26. The European results speak for themselves.

Talk about recruitment, spending and players ability all we want but the reality is our coaching is not good enough at a European level.

AEK did not have great players but their coach had the correct tactics.

Have said for a long time we are coached in possession above all else so at a higher level when we do not have the ball we are clueless and shapeless.

We are a bunch of hopeless chasers when we lose possession.

I am never optimistic in Europe with the type of tactics and team shape we have.

  27. If Rodgers is not backed in January that means he has chucked it and board are not willing to let him spend as he will be out the door come May.

  28. SFTB, no need to fall out ,got the impression Brendan can do no wrong, but everyone has an opinion its a blog ,as far as the gp bit goes see him tomorrow 11 am about my gout hh.hope you are well.

  29. There was an entry of 3.5m for onerous contracts in the most recent accounts, who or whom were the recipients anyone know?

    WBC

I agree with you, although he has another 2 years on his deal after this, would cost plenty, not taking into account his backroom staff, things dont look or sound right, the team is not playing well, and I do not think for one minute the board would bag Lawwell

  30. What an utterly abysmal performance in front of thousands of fans who made the effort to travel.

Brendan says he is going to analyse it. Haven’t we heard that before? And what has changed?

We played Sevco off the park several weeks and they were fortunate to keep the deficit to 1-0. Yet they can travel to Croatia, Serbia, Slovenia and Spain and avoid defeat.

What were we trying to do tonight? Win the game, or avoid defeat? Hard to tell, because in the few times any Celtic player got near their goal, he had almost zero support. Yet when they had the ball, they cut through our midfield like a knife through butter.

The familiar failings were all too apparent. We could not keep the ball for more than a few seconds. Three passes in a row were beyond us. We repeatedly passed it straight to a red shirt. We even threw it directly to them. Possession was regularly terminated by a panicked punt anywhere, even when colleagues were available.

Gordon was time wasting from the second minute, vastly irritating the crowd, the opposition, and ultimately the referee. He finally lost patience when Hendry emulated Gordon while taking a free kick. What does Hendry then do? Passes straight to a Salzburg player!

When Griffiths went off, after displaying that his off field life style has caught up with him, our least bad corner taker was McGregor, an empty shirt tonight. His corners, floated to the far corner of the penalty area, are placed precisely where they least threaten the goal. Put Hendry on Boyata’s shoulders and he still would not have got near them.

Lustig is a sad husk of a once fine player. Like he did versus AEK, he did nothing to prevent crosses come in from the left, and we were fortunate not to lose more heavily. We lost every 50/50 ball tonight, and, as a team, looked slow, cumbersome, and flat footed. When we trooped off, we looked a demoralized ragbag of a team. Rod Stewart’s expression said it all. It looked like “Why did I bother?”

Meanwhile, what are our coaches doing? Mainly sitting schtum, with no expression and no animation. Brendan also now looks like a bystander. Unless this team is substantially augmented in January, it does not have the energy, skill or intestinal fortitude to come anywhere near winning a treble. I hope I am wrong, but I just can ‘t see it.
