Our forwards couldn’t hold the ball up at all and that, IMO, was their biggest failing.

They either couldn’t control any balls knocked up to them or were easily brushed aside (Eddy’s goal apart).

What was Griffiths about tonight? Absolutely shocking performance.

Because they couldn’t hold on to the ball Salzburg, especially in the second half, just kept coming back at us.

Unfortunately, our defence can’t cope against a decent team. We don’t have the quality.

    As for Gordon’s distribution…FFS!

Every time he has the ball at his feet we are in trouble.

Not a pleasant evening but not a surprise.

I wouldn’t give any of our players pass marks tonight. But, then they’ve been like that all season.

  2. its the manner and performance of the defeat tonight , what position was JF meant to be playing ?

see BR using the we will learn from our mistakes tonight , we should be the best team in europe with all these lessons we have learned , not good enough

Admire your souciance. We play Leipzig away in 3 weeks. What do you think Brendan will do that is different in terms of personnel or tactics? For all his good qualities, Brendan has only ever won one Champions League Group Stage game (Anderlecht) at home or away with either Liverpool or us. Surprising, eh? His Europa League record is equally indifferent.

He never sets his teams up to defend in depth, even when we have zero chance of winning (Barca, PSG). Baffles me what he is trying to do. Why not try to get at least a point? We were up 1-0 tonight, and absolutely nothing changed. Stubbornness? Carelessness? Indifference? Hoping for a miracle?

Result? What most on here expected as inevitable. And what is sad is that it will, in all likelihood, be repeated in Leipzig on October 25.

Don’t worry. Pretty soon we won’t have to.

Not if this lot keep performing like tonight.

  6. Why can’t we just admit it,BR can’t walk on water.

This has been a season and a half in the making.

Boring to watch and utterly out our depth in Europe.

And we continue to learn nothing.

I agree that injuries to key players has not helped but neither has a complete and baffling loss of form by Ntcham and Edouard . Almost of Sinclair proportions.

    ————————————————————————————————

Not baffling at all,in huff due to departure of Dembele, only way to fix is move them also,as I said earlier to someone on Twitter,we need more Jim Brogans and less tourists.

Big McKenna actually appealing now, when you consider our options, the might play, might not play Croatians.

Then there is JF,been saying for years his contribution is limited, why is a guy who never tackles left as back marker, that is incredible. 4 yr deal even more incredible.

4 years ago they gave us a lesson at CP when Ronny was manager. They were a benchmark we should have been aiming for. Progressive, attacking, a clear style of play and recruiting players to suit the system. They have improved since then, we are no better than we were, in Europe not domestically.

Forget the myth that Red Bull spend fortunes on their team, they don’t, they scout well, and bring in players that fit the way they play (Hadaira and Samessekou cost £0 and Minamino £300k). Their striker (Dabbur) cost half of what Eddy cost.

You are correct, we were always going to struggle against a better team with several players missing, however it’s not only the injured players that are missing, there’s the ones who left and we’re not replaced in the summer that were also missing. The strength and quality on our bench was a disgrace.

The gulf in class between Salzburg and Vienna is astonishingly enormous.

    ———————————————————————————————————–

With respect, more to do with the opposition than the Vienna teams.

Pains me to say it but the huns blew them away playing like Celtic.

    ——–

Nonsense I’m afraid. Salzburg have won 9 out of 9 in Austria and won in Leipzig. Vienna are 9th in the Austrian league, 18 points behind SB after 9 games. It’s not a debate, Salzburg are clearly far superior.

  11. glendalystonsils on

The obsession with ten in a row is not only so we beat our own record, but more so we go one better than the huns as well. Maybe it’s not just their own fans who don’t believe they’re dead.

Meanwhile we’re looking towards a distant horizon but failing to notice the banana skin one step in front of us.

  12. its ironic that all the players that recently signed extensions to their contracts are either injured or playing crap

looks like their game plan worked and can now relax until contract nears end.

I remember Martin O’Neill failing to qualify in Europe with 9 points and the dead team going though on 4 pts one year. Have I just made that up?

We are 2 games in, so I just want to be a wee bit patient on this,

I was working late, but my phone helpfully told me that we were 1 up, so I rushed home to watch the whole game from the start to be so equally disappointed with the outcome.

  15. Thanks to Tully57 once again.

The ticket will have a prominent perch in my little shrine of unforgettable Celtic experiences.

If you have any spares for Leipzig then let me know…following Celtic is an addiction and the only sort of cold turkey I need is if Celtic happens to be playing in Turkey and it is snowing.

Football is a microcosm of wider life with the victories and defeats mirroring the world of triumphs and disasters. Few truisms are more applicable and characteristic of Celtic supporters as the ability to take a reverse and suddenly remember a song, a story, a joke or an ambition that says “but we’ll still stuff Leipzig”..but most of all says….”This is who I am”.

So thankyou for the ticket, without which I might possible have still had a great time, but I wouldn’t have had such a magic time (minus 45 mins) that reminded me of the utter infatuation that this club and its history inspires in generation after generation.

Ha, ha…..folks criticising ‘fans favourite’ Lee Griffiths.

We’ve just given him a 4 year contract.

The epitome of a Scottish Ned.

Of course he’s one of our own……..kisses the badge, likes a bevvy, pies and the burds (sic).

Even Sutton said he looked out of shape.

Paid millions but refuses to make the sacrifices.

    He’s a charlatan.

  18. Just a thought and not a go at BR but maybe the WGS haters will now appreciate what that wee mhan did in Europe and also in Scotland against a financially pumped-up, cheating, huns outfit and corrupt Scottish football legislators.

For anybody that plays the Artmedia Bratislava card I will raise you a Lincoln Red Imps.

    INIQUITOUSIV on 4TH OCTOBER 2018 9:20 PM – A pretty fair summation.

I’ll be in Leipzig for the game so we’ll see if it is me or Malorbhoy who is the jinx or maybe both of us. Saw some good photos of Malorbhoy, Kikinthenakas and BRTH enjoying themselves before the game. If the team could perform like the support we would be world beaters, but alas no.

If they are in a huff to the extent that they are not prepared to give it their all , the manager shouldn’t be playing them. Boyata should be every bit as much in the huff but he is putting that aside and turning in a very professional performance.

  20. Of tonight’s team, Gordon is not good enough, Lustig is finished, Hendry isn’t good enough yet to play at that level, Boyata wants away, Ntcham wants away, KT/McGregor/Forrest are running on empty and all three need a few weeks out of the team but can’t happen as when you look at the bench it’s bereft of mediocrity let alone quality, Edouard looks lost (goal apart) without a proper strike partner and his strike partner looks unfit and contributing little. The only positive, aside from how well Eddy took his goal, was Mulumbu up until he tired.

10 in a row is for the supporters to sing about if they so choose. It’s up to the Board to look at the bigger picture, they are paid top dollar to do so. The Board have a duty to look at the banana skin in front of us and have clear coherent plan to progress overall. They don’t and have no intention of doing so. It has been an abject failure over the past 18 months and changes must happen if we are to take the next step. The trouble is the Board have already taken us back two steps from where we were a year ago. I keep saying it but it is not acceptable and will sendup costing us the Manager.

“Our spacing is also a huge issue as to often the gaps between zones are huge and the midfield in particular neither support our forwards or protect the defense.”

    ——-

I would agree with this, although I thought it was really good in the first half. The gaps between the lines were short and they couldn’t pass through us. The midfield three were in a neat line and supported the defence and (to a lesser extent) the attack. We were also getting the ball forward quicker.

We came out in the second half and looked totally disjointed. No shape or organisation. Gaps all over the place. No idea what happened or whether it was planned, but we looked a far poorer team.

  23. BP, Hi there pal. I’m just lurking tonight. Feeling a bit low with that performance. Something’s wrong at the club just now. I think Brendan has taken us as far as he can. I don’t think the players are reacting to him anymore. I get the feeling it all centres round the Dembele and Boyata situation.

  24. Griff has the tools but lacks the mindset to be a truly great player.

But if he looks lost is it maybe a lack of clarity in his role?

Edouard also seems unsure of his role, likewise McGregor.

JF should never have given away penalty as he was in his favored position of facing Gordon and should have easily given backpass as per usual.

Malumbu has the guile and experience to be effective but to see the best of him we will need a better set up.

If we are going to continue with our pool implemented pass out from the back game then Bain would be more effective than Gordon.

  25. 9 games in December now….wtf…like going back to playing school fitba….total shambles

  26. To all the mineshafters out there, tonight wasn’t a classic football wise and as a veteran of many European trips, it ended up much the same as usual but the atmosphere in the shamrock bar in Salzburg at the moment is electric.

Celtic are the supporters and win lose or draw that never changes, some people might say “mugs” but they are not here now and quite frankly, I’m happy with that.

I’ll be in Leipzig in a few weeks and win lose or draw we will have a party because we are Celtic and that alone is worth celebrating.

  27. It didn’t take the board apologists to turn on a double treble winning manager as I predicted.

  28. glendalystonsils on

It sounds a bit defeatist but I’m not sure I would want us to be involved in Europe after Christmas .I think the chances of us being without Boyata (and maybe others) would leave us further weakened and overstretched on too many fronts. The danger of dropping points to just about anyone in the league could seriously risk title 8.

Unless January proves to be a masterpiece of recruitment of course………………………….
