Samaras and Commons guile preferred to Boerrigter tonight

354

You and I both like to see new signings introduced but it would be an enormous gamble to throw Derk Boerrigter into the fray tonight.  The player is unlikely to have trained with his new teammates, will know little about Celtic’s systems, and while Neil Lennon will have watched Derk many times, the real discovery period will be in the weeks to come.  A place on the bench for Derk will be fine.

I’ve been a bit confused by the Moh Bangura debate; can we really care that much if he plays, I mean, we’re not talking about a guy who scored as many goals for us as Daryl Murphy here.  The discourse sounds not dissimilar to some of the ways Jock Stein would manipulate events ahead of a game.  Put the opponent on the back foot from the off, cover all bases.

Key players for Celtic tonight, as always when it comes to Europe, will be Georgios Samaras and Kris Commons.  They have the maturity and guile to know how to deliver, but our defence will need to be alert to what will be the superior fitness of the Elfsborg players, especially late in the game.

    Livibhoy,

its not so much fitness per se thats the issue, more match fitness which is an altogether different thing!

I was talking to an pro from the lower leagues on Mon night and he was talking about this very thing as he was being offered a contract by a team who will be playing Sevco this year. he’s 35 now and although he feels fit he was not sure if his match fitness was up to scratch now.

I asked him how much difference that can make at that level. “Massive” was the reply!

Step up another level or 2 and you can guess the difference it can make.

True a player’s/teams’ ability will also obviously be a big factor, bit if you tire, a team with lesser ability but more fitness can make you work harder and be more difficult to break down!

    HAIL! HAIL!

Think the team more or less picks itslef, 11 from Cliftonville with potential change of Charlie for Beram in Centre mid.

subs bench getting stronger with Charlie / Beram plus 5 from 7 of new bhoy Bo Derek ,Joe, Adam, Amido,Tom,Tony & Steven M

Don’t give us te kiss of death with Bangura by saying that.

I remember doing the same when Bo Andersen came on at Ibrox and he scored two.

for us to part with 2 million for Bangura he must havehad something.

Jinky rated him as his most difficult opponent in Scotland

When I was living in Edinburgh in the early 80s I used to go into his pub at the bottom of Easter Road- I was pally with one of the barmaids- and behind the bar he had a big picture of John MacDonald throwing himself at the turf after a non tackle by Erich. Above this picture was the legend ‘Sport for all! Diving’. The SFA tried to fine him

Dare say there isn’t one person here that wouldn’t play Kevin Doyle from the start if he was available for tonight’s game.

A menace he is,and he would also bring with him a wealth of experience to the table.

    But he is 29,or something?

If we pay £2million for him at this stage of the game, then we won’t be able to sell him on for a profit,as is the club and manager’s preferred policy.

    It’s a nonsense.

Shameless re-post, it might be of use to someone

Just watched Football’s Secret which was on BBC 3 a few weeks back. It’s about how football deals with depression.Presented by PFA Chairman Clarke Carlisle, who has suffered for a long time,he is superbly articulate and tries to open the condition up for all to try and understand it.Very emotional insight, might still be on the I Player, highly recommended.

  16. I’ve no particular opinion on Doyle. He seemed a good player when at Reading and don’t really understand why it went wrong at Wolves. Perhaps the right move could see him regain form?

All I would say is that the valuation of £2m is way too high for his current form and the league he is in.

This is (once was in) EPL inflation. I’m sure we could spend £2m more wisely elsewhere.

Hoping for better than Doyle TBH.Can’t see us going above around 750k,given the current transfer model, due to his age.

  19. Paul

I’ll care more if he scores!

Put it this way. He should not be playing against us full stop. I’m suprised NL did not include a clause to stop this from happening. He must have been aware Elfsborg could have been potential opponents.

Let us forget for a second that he is rank rotten and the reason he is on loan in the first place. I cannot for the life of me see how he could possibly return to the club if he plays. I’m expecting the bhoy (and he is still a bhoy, although, by the sound of it, he himself, has forget this fact) to be booed tonight if he plays.

He should be telling the Elfsborg manager that he is not playing against his contracted employers. If my employer seconded me to a competitor my employer would assume I would not harm their business in any way while during my secondment.

If he plays it proves he has no loyalty to us and is not fit to wear our beloved shirt. That’s why I care.

  20. Kojo – we let hooper go – we rated him. Same for big vic. Chelsea didn’t rate sutton or boyd. Players leave clubs for all sorts of reasons. Doyle is decent although i think we should look elsewhere unless wages and fee are realistic.

Been out a few times with the son in law the past couple of weeks, too hot to walk though, played good enough to beat him, so delighted with that, as he is a proper golfer.

  24. Bangura Will play and play well tonight. Our players Will need to be on their toes. Just the way things go. The guy is doing his job having been farmed out. The Celtic support should be kind to him as we are with most past players (he won’t be back)

  25. The Battered Bunnet on

Kevin Doyle appears to be getting the full Stephen Fletcher treatment today.

The longer we go without signing him, the better he becomes, irrespective of the evidence which indicates that he’s done little of note in a football top since that night in Benalmadena with Jessica Garlick in 2003.

    Big G,

what loyalty should he show us? He was sent out on loan by us, because we didnt think he was/is good enough to play for us…..possibly as yet or ever, that I dont know.

Im assuming that Elfsborg are paying at least a part of his salary, therefore he has as much, if not more, obligation to them than us, as they at least are letting him do his job as a footballer; play football!

Not to mention the general attitude that has been the Celtic support’s thoughts towards Bangura!

We were silly enough not to insert the “no-play v us” clause and as such…tough!

If plays against us, then so be it. If he hurts us, then the blame should lie with those whose job it is to prevent this sort of legal contractual issue from hurting us.

Like Paul, im pretty sure the current “he cant play” attitude from Celtic is as much mind games as any real wariness of his ability to hurt us.

    HAIL! HAIL!
