Samaras and Commons guile preferred to Boerrigter tonight

354

You and I both like to see new signings introduced but it would be an enormous gamble to throw Derk Boerrigter into the fray tonight.  The player is unlikely to have trained with his new teammates, will know little about Celtic’s systems, and while Neil Lennon will have watched Derk many times, the real discovery period will be in the weeks to come.  A place on the bench for Derk will be fine.

I’ve been a bit confused by the Moh Bangura debate; can we really care that much if he plays, I mean, we’re not talking about a guy who scored as many goals for us as Daryl Murphy here.  The discourse sounds not dissimilar to some of the ways Jock Stein would manipulate events ahead of a game.  Put the opponent on the back foot from the off, cover all bases.

Key players for Celtic tonight, as always when it comes to Europe, will be Georgios Samaras and Kris Commons.  They have the maturity and guile to know how to deliver, but our defence will need to be alert to what will be the superior fitness of the Elfsborg players, especially late in the game.

  1. TET – That is sensational value for tinto; cannot get anything over here that’s drinkable for less than a pearly diver. Be carefull with yer golf prowess, ACGR might be tuning in and he’ll be looking for strokes:)

Bangura – boys dinae fret as Mo “double dutch” is what i like to call keech. He will do anything of note tonight assuming he plays. Celtic did not even bother to insert the normal clause in his loan contract to bar him from playing against us:) why, well because he’s keech!

Celtic to score 4 goals tonight and concede nane.

    That is some question.

Bangura from what I have seen is nowhere near a £2m player. Doyle has been a £6m player and looked worth it. He can reach those heights again. The guy is proven! No doubt about it. He is a proven EPL player and internationlist. He has looked worth his cash at £6m. Bangura doesn’t look worth £300k.

Is it because Mo Bangura cost nowhere near what was reported?

  4. I think that the Hoops will win comfortably tonight.

So I have bet 3-0 and Sammi, Commons, Lustig and Mulgrew any time. Any 3 from 4 to score.

    LiviBhoy,

I guess all signings are a gamble to whatever degree. Silly to look back I know, but I think Russell would have been about as low-risk as you get – re transfer fee and wages. For whatever reason Neil decided against.

Neil spoke about getting in experienced guys when he first took the job – Campbell, James, Bullard. I think we were lucky to NOT get any of them in with hindsight.

It’s not that I don’t think Doyle could do a job – his workrate is excellent. Just worried about his poor scoring rate, and that Balde was going to be the target man. Is he not working out as hoped? Who knows….

  6. Battered bunnet .. I am not bothered about Doyle one way or another. I think he is a good player. But Quoting goal scoring records and citing relegation in the same post needs also to take in to account the fact that any striker in a relegated team is unlikely to have been getting decent service.

I suspect if you look at the relegated teams they had problems at the back and in midfield.

Goal scorers need chances. If you have stats to prove he was missing a hat full of chances in these years point it out and i Will take yer point…..

The best deal we got for Bangura was that the Swedish side are paying all his wages. I would be surprised if he plays for Celtic again. I will also be surprised if he starts the game tonight. I reckon he will be on the bench. If he does get on Kayal will get a booking for kicking him.

  8. Offer wolves 500k and toss in McGeoch or Watt on loan for the season. Watt would get good experience in league one.

  9. I see mention of skippy …. Point in case…. Guy scored regularly with us. Goes to England ends up in struggling team. What are his stats like since then? I wonder…….

I think perhaps, when it comes to proven strikers, you have a lower burden of proof then me.

Looking at Doyle, in the 11 seasons from 2003 to 2013, from Cork City to Wolves via Reading, he has never scored 20 times in a season, and 5 seasons in the last 8 has failed to score 10.

Now at the peak of his career, he is established as a 1 goal every 5 games forward based on the evidence of his last 150 games over 4 years.

  11. By the way i only want Doyle if we can’t get a younger player of similar or better ability……. For all my contrary nonsense…….. Offski …… Tv or not tv?

Well, according to Frank De Boer Derk has had a full pre-season with Ajax, has played one full game and should be ready to play. Can see him being a second half substitute, (for another ghuy) and making a big impact, reminiscent of Jan Vennegor of Hesselink a few years back. I can still hear that crowd even now; ” Give us a J!” “J!”; “Give us an A!” “A!”……..

I agree with a lot of what you said. I tghink experience is needed in the side though. At 29 he is hardly old. I think Doyle will be hungry to prove Wolves wrong and hungry to prove he still has it for Ireland. He doesn’t strike me as a quitter. He looks like a battler to me and just because he didn’t get many for Wolves means nothing. he will get a rake of chances at Celtic and will create goals for others. He won’t be afraid to get stuck in and can play up front alone. Anything under £2m looks a good deal for the lad. Celtic have just signed a 26 year old Dutchman with injury issues for £2m or thereabouts. Doyle wouldn;t be as much as a gamble as him for me. All signings are of course a gamble but Doyle looks to have quality and I personally think would be a great player in the Hoops. Certain players fit at certain clubs and I think this lad would fit right in at Paradise and score a hat full of goals.

It’s a 2007 Castilla y Leon called Vega Pati, as I said, quality for next to nothing.

Had a game with ACGR a few months ago, my first game for over a year, so was a bit out of sorts, wife is much better now, so more time for the golf these days, surprising how quickly it comes back.

    Stick at it.

  16. Corkcelt.. Just a gut feeling. At my age past performance tells me to go with them. Can’t see the swedes giving us any trouble.

Wouldn’t even mind if Mo scored as long as we scored 5, but not going to change 4-0 it is.

The Battered Bunnet – Do you not understand the concept of forward players that are not out-and-out goalscorers? But are there to do the spade work, and to pressure and intimidate opposition defenders,so that the more prolific striker/finisher can benefit.

As regards fitness, in recent seasons we have knocked Moscow Dinamo, Spartak Moscow and Helsingborgs in the qualifiers. All of these teams were 18 a 20 games into their season. Celtic have superior players. We need them to play out of their skins however.

I am a little worried about Mo Bangura. I don’t like him written off the way he is on here. He can win headers and knock the ball on for others to run onto. I think he has a scoring ratio of 1:3 for Elfsborg. He needs to be watched. Someone said earlier or yesterday that the key to winning the game will be closing down Svensson and I would agree with that.

Don’t rate Bangura at all, but….

Harald Brattbak didn’t score many for Celtic, but played on left wing for Rosenberg against us, cut in usefully and I believe scored in both legs of Champions League. Possibly 3 over both legs.

Kevin Doyle has scored 12 international goals. Can’t be all that bad.

The guy would be a success at Celtic. I think Neil Lennon thinks so too.

Let me tell you, Bhoys, bit of a panic there ……… Car broke down (for the first time) and, with the whole family away on Holiday, it was ‘oh shoite’ time …… Howeva, 2 phone calls and arranged a lift to the local Supporters Bus (can’t walk for any distance with this stupid back problem)…..and a lift back to house …!!!!!…. PHEW..!!! …… Now where’s that Ibuprofen ..??

Chris Sutton played a host of games at Centre Half and still got 63 goals in 130 appearances.

Is that not prolific? Cause I remember him working for the team as hard as anyone.

Just because you make chances for others in the team does not detract from you scoring.

A different example perhaps: While Luis Suarez played for Ajax he was both top scorer and top for assists in each of his seasons there.

The Battered Bunnet – I would not dispute that for a second.

It seems that’s the type of footballer you were yerself, therefore you shouldn’t really be posting the goal scoring statistics of forwards that play in a similar style.

  27. Chief concern about Bangura should be that supposedly sharp suits did not cover all bases when conducting loan deal.

As the man said. A gentleman’s agreement ain’t worth paper it’s written on.

  28. Son of Gabriel

Chris Sutton came here with something to prove. I reckon for £6m he was the easiest gamble Celtic ever took. There must have been teams in England kicking themselves when he started to turn it on at Celtic. The goals v Ajax away and Juventus at home are some of his highlights. Absolute belters and could play anywhere up the middle of the pitch. Totally outsnding that night at Blackburn too in the midfield.
