Scope to rest players between European dates

124

Under normal conditions, starting the season at home to Hamilton Accies would be welcome as a soft introduction, but anything out of the ordinary is a leveller.  We have yet to play a football game and no friendlies are arranged, a situation that will need to change quickly.

Neither team will be fully fit for that fixture on 2 August, a situation that favours Hamilton significantly more than Celtic.

The European qualifiers are sandwiched between fixtures against Aberdeen, Dundee United, Motherwell, Ross County, Livingston and Hibs.  Crucially, we are at home ahead of both play-off round legs .  There should be scope in these fixtures for Neil Lennon to rest players during this period, without harming our 10-in-a-row quest too much.

Lenny has said that Fosters time to OK the loan deal,

    hi mate.

can you post where lenny said the above?

  2. McCoist moaning already about Sevco having to go to Aberdeen and that Celtics opponents are Hamilton Accies at the start of the season.

Hes also unhappy about Celtic v Sevco fixture being in October, as Celtic Park MAY have some supporters allowed in that day.

I wish someone would tell this Chump that his opinions mean nothing.

    ………………

I am seriously thinking about arranging a weeks holiday in Blackpool in the next few weeks, as I think I am due a wee break after all the health issues since last year.

I have picked out a Hotel which is painted Green and White…and really stands out LOL.

If I can make certain arrangements here at home, I am eager to book a Train and Hotel and get away in the next few weeks however…..

I dont think I would be allowed to make such a journey at this time due to Covid Restrictions…hopefully that restriction will be lifted soon ?

  4. Lenny referring to Fraser as ‘the player’ perhaps signals a hardening of attitude. I’d hoped the Forster deal would go through but having read Lennon’s comments this morning, it’s clear we need to move on.

Barkas is a very tenacious ‘keeper . In fact he’s like a dog with a bone.

  7. BSR…

40 games in a compressed period in 2020 after a long layoff will mean injuries (you can see them mounting in the EPL) so won’t take us long to run through the squad…

I’d like a keeper (of course), a quality centre half and I do find myself looking at LB with a huge dose of frustration that it ain’t good enough….not sure the club believes in Bayo, Leigh is fragile and Klimala unproven. Feels light if we want to play 2 up top.

I think we have a bit of work to do squad-wise…

  8. Dexter P. Bampot on

This article has been posted at an opportune time as the BBC reveal Calmac to have played the most football in 2019/20- to quote Jeremy Clarkson- IN THE WORLD. What a machine!

I really think that, apart from CL qualifiers/cup final, significant consideration should be given to allowing him a month off the rest of domestic football. We would minimise the risk of burnout or injury and will benefit from it later in the season.

  9. Big Wavy

    Agree with all of that.

Normally on CQN at this time of year we have ‘ a bloated squad ‘ and posters are queuing up to ‘ drive them to the airport ‘ themselves.

Clearly the best quad in the SPL could be strengthened with a Centre Back and a direct signing for first choice goalkeeper, the FF situation is about money and I’d patch Hart and Marshall, and look elsewhere if it was me.

‘Have we signed a left back?’ is a cliche in the Celtic support, but with £5M spent on two attempts, I think we’ll see the season start with one of them in situ. I also believe right back could be strengthened never mind left, as El Hammed hasn’t played since September in the league, few games at any of his clubs put a question mark over him, I’m afraid, and Jeremy Frimpong just isn’t a right back IMO.

All about opinions, but we’ve still to see our last January signings never mind the jewels we unearth after Covid devastation?, which thus far with season ticket renewal gloom and refund deflection has seen Celtic avoid spending any of the fabled big bank balance.

  10. I’m avoiding any Soro reflections as I jinxed poor wee Kouassi, who I thought was a player.

I’d like to see a breakthrough season for wee Dembele and if we can up Mikey Johnston’s weetabix intake we have one helluva player there.

    Half full csc

  11. There is NO scope for resting players at all!

    10 in-a-row is everything.

    Europe can wait.

  12. Croppybhoy

Disagree fella. The club needs Champions League qualififcation. It’s an August deliverable so should be our priority early doors.

    £30m worth….

  13. Big Jimmy,

I hope you keep well and get some sort of holiday organised. As for the racing, its a total farce. i too was on Dettori and as you say, I never got a run for my money. I think there is something going on to help the bookies. Just look at the last four winners today – 40s,20s, 16s and 22s. Who could pick them?

  14. The Hand of God, I knew a few people from Scalpay area, McG family probably the most their mother had the same name as me although no relation, was up that way recently and you wouldn’t recognise it with the schools and flats all gone

  15. I know it’s not necessarily helpful or valid but comparing our squad to Sevco’s and it quickly becomes clear who is in desperate need of strengthening.

The age profile of our squad means Frimpong, MJ, Christie, Taylor, Boli, Ajer and Edouard will all likely be better next season as they mature and develope. CalMac and Julien should be approaching their peak football years.

Sevco have an overweight hot head who scored 12 league goals last year and in Defoe and Davis, they’ve players who simply will not last the pace of a season. Throw in Katic’s acl injury and they now need a new CB. They’re already in big trouble.

We need a keeper and a CB. Nothing major as things currently stand.

  16. An Dun

I like your theory and agree on the age of the Sevco main players.

One mind trick i am now employing with players who are seen as unproven or raw is to imagine Sevco signed them.

e.g. Klimala. The papers would have been all over the ‘hot young talent’ who Sevco swooped in to spend big money on. Would have been seen as a threat by us and he would have got game time and a few goals

But he signed for us and his ‘career hasn’t got out of the blocks’ based on the papers.

why? Because we have excellent strikers already and he has not got a chance yet. He would have been desperately needed at Ibrox

I think we just need a keeper and the squad is fine

  17. Always amazes me when people doubt”Untried talent”as in the case of Klimala.Maybe I am wrong, but was not Eddy,an untried talent?.Every striker whoever played had to be tried out sometime.Patrik never had a fair shot last year.Read the boys comments. He now looks fit, hungry, and a bit of a Hun skelper in waiting. Only time will tell, but to write off players without a fair chance seems to be the fashion for far too many Celtic fans nowadays.Excuse me if I would rather go with the thoughts of Boniek, one of the greatest Polish forwards, who said,”A great talent leaving Poland too soon.Reminds me of a young,Lewandowski”.
