“Sell Out Saturday, show everyone the SPL doesn’t need the Old Firm to thrive”. Discuss.

You have to admire the Aberdeen fans, and fans of every other club in the league, even Kilmarnock fans, who are clearly infuriated by the actions of their chairman.  For perhaps the first time in history they have stood up to their clubs and football administrators and effected real and genuine change in our game.

Aberdeen fans produced this Sell-out Saturday graphic, urging people to “show everyone the SPL doesn’t need the Old Firm to thrive”.  By ‘Old Firm’ I am sure they don’t mean the cash-cow rivalry Celtic had with Rangers, they mean without Rangers, and without Celtic too.

For every other club in the SPL, Celtic are now their most precious visiting brand.  For fans of every other club in the SPL, Celtic are a competitive irrelevance.  This season our income is likely to be greater than that of every other club in the league.  We pay superstar wages while, for the most part, they pay real world footballers real world compensation.

In short, the SPL doesn’t need the SPL to thrive.  The clubs may (or may not) believe they need Celtic to pay bills, but recent events have demonstrated that might not be the case.

There is another problem to consider.  If the SPL keeps Celtic, in a decade or so they will have Newco-Rangers, and the whole dysfunctional business will start all over again.  Kick Celtic out now and Newco-Rangers will never materialise in the manner it would if Celtic remained.

SPL fan power has one more club to sort out.

  3. Ah, complacency will surely not be a problem from here on in I reckon.

Still, Ajax look a pretty decent side.

    C’mon Celtic.

Any time Forrest has had the ball he has been muscled of it with ease.

Forrest far too often looks like a wee boy,,,constantly doing the same thing, losing the ball, falling over and then looking to the ref while waving his arms in the air!!!

    Not good enough im afraid!!

  5. celtic were very poor, ajex were very good, hopefully we put up a better preformance in teh second half.

if the guys think a centreback would close the gap between us and them, they are kidding themselves the gulf in technical ability and passing and moving is huge, victor still looks composed which is a good signed.

the finns wont be anywhere near as good as ajex

No. We are still suffering from no one at CP knowing what a central defender looks like. Not since the days of Joss/Mjallaby have we had someone even close to quality.

Do we think this could force the issue on spending?Lennon has already stated the need for a centre half and powerful striker.

Well that was embarrasing to watch to say the least.

was going to go up to an English pub to watch it but thought better of it.thank God.

would´ve been getting the p*sh ripped out of me by now.

Fear the worst against Helsinki if we can´t do better than that.

  10. What a wake up 45 minutes call for all Celtic dreamers.

Not prepared for Euro qualifiers, technically outclassed and embarrassed, even in fitness levels.

I thought Celtic started well, good shape, good passing,,,lost the first goal and completely fell apart,as per usual,,,lose a goal and panic!!

Will a new centre back make us pass the ball better or cause us to hit the target more than we should????

    Thought not!!

Our defenders get dragged all over the place on every attack. Good teams have a solid foundation. Schoolboy knowledge. We start every match v semi decent teams on minus 2. Its been happening for years. Every European away game, minus 2. Minimum.

Messi would struggle on the service our strikers get!

We need a creative midfield player!

Don’t know what he’s done to p*ss Neilly off.

    Why keep him?

  15. Training match or not this a complete outclassing.

3 at the back against Ajax away from home aye right, Vic,Rogne and Charlie are to slow for that.

Hopefully Lenny and the team realise now how much work remains.

We may squeak past Helkinki but the round after that will be very difficult for this squad.

We lack pace and that is the reason we cannot play direct,

De Boer will rub it in.

“2 CB ,striker and winger required.

They were paid 5 times what our centre backs are paid today and that was 10 years ago.

No Sammi and giving James a shot at no.10 = not serious.

Kris Commons would cause more problems for their hitherto untested defence.

  18. This is a wake-up call from a very good young Ajax side. they will be getting big bids in for a few of those boys I would think. Tactics need revised if Celtic are to stop a real hiding.

  19. The worrying thing about tonight’s performance is that it could be argued this is our strongest 11

I feel that Young Forrest has been built up far too soon,,,yes he’s young but at the moment he has not shown enough to merit the hype!!!

  21. Allowing for the superior technique and sharpness of the Ajax boys, Neil will have to show that he can coach a teamto the standard required.

    A

He hadn’t really shown that yet, as we spend tomany games chasing shadows.

Forrest, Stokes and Hooper are disconnected from the game and Ledley’s lack of mobility is being exposed.

At this rate, we can forget CL group stages.

At best, we could be a useful Europa League side, but a lot of work needs doing.

Ditch the back three, Neil. You have proved that it doesn’t work against wide players.

perhaps, but other European sides with a far less substantial income than us dont seem to have trouble finding quality. Our central defender purchases for 9 years have been downright embarrassing.

its all opinions, i think that ajex team are a very good team.

however, i think our problems are more fundamental than simply needing centrebacks etc… our style of football, lack of angles and shape is not worrying its normal in scotland, now that is worrying.

  24. Oh deary deary deary me

Advisable to cancel game against Real Madrid now

Jeezo at the moment we would struggle to beat a 3rd division team

It’s amazing what an experienced centre half can do,organise for one thing. And a powerful striker who can hold the ball up,bring players into play and create havoc in the box from a single cross wouldn’t go amiss.Yes we can’t pass or move as good as them but we’ve got to do something.
