Sky Sports ex-Newco man plows into Celtic

233

Sky Sports followed the news that they captured SPFL TV rights with one of their media team having a go at Celtic and Peter Lawwell.  Andrew Dickson (not that one) was previously part of Newco’s media team but is now a producer with Sky.

Following Peter Lawwell’s response to a question on needing assurance for the safety of Celtic fans at Ibrox, Dickson tweeted:

“Only place there has been a safety issue in recent times was at Celtic Park – involving Celtic fans. No track record of the problems Lawwell fears at Ibrox so why chuck that one into the conversation? To make your opponents look like big bad Rangers?”

I have been going to Ibrox for 35 years.  During that time, and for decades before, Celtic fans had exclusive access to the stadium via Broomload Road.  On 29 December, 800 Celtic fans will have to make their way through Broomload Road, which will also be the only access area 7,000 Newo fans have to the stadium.

There is a bit of a pantomime goes on at these games, with fans shouting at each other from the safety of a police cordon.  Due to police planning, fans do not intermingle in the vicinity of the stadium.

Police permit fans of other clubs to walk through Newco fans to attend Ibrox (and Celtic Park), but they have yet to decide if cordons is unnecessary for next month’s fixture, or if segregation it to happen, how 800 Celtic fans can safely enter the stadium.

Celtic have been in regular dialogue with the police and League since Newco’s statement on the subject in the summer and await a decision.  Sky Sports staff seem to have picked up the baton to support Newco’s position, despite safety concerns.

At least there should be no trouble after the match, that lot are usually well home by full time.

  1. There seems to be at least 800 Celtic supporters prepared to visit Govan. Imo, they should all be discouraged. Forget about bussing them together to and from there. We take the 800 tickets and don’t distribute them. If our supporters do go and are attacked the media will concoct some utter nonsense that it was their fault.

If it discomforts SKY, even better. I used to be a customer. Haven’t been for a couple of years, in part because of their fawning on the deid team , usually to the detriment of Celtic.

Talk in the last few days has been of Rosenborg saving their big players for the Norweigan cup final at the weekend. I have no doubt that Brendan will send his strongest team out , with the clear message that all this guff should be ignored and that this game should be treated as the most important of the season so far.

  4. BOURNESOUPRECIPE on 26TH NOVEMBER 2018 12:54 PM

The extreme deficiency that maligns the Celtic PLC is never more evident than when Celtic Football Club is being treated differently. Differently, when a policeman expects, anticipates but fails to act on trouble merely when Celtic win again.

When Artur Boruc made the sign of the cross it was fine in Scotland to anticipate that ‘he’ could ‘have caused a riot’, the 2018 stabbings, coin throwing. and other general drawing of blood, is always someone else fault when bears get restless.

There was Hibs over celebrating for winning a cup for the first time in fifty years but Focus has clearly had enough at seven in a row, and double trouble trebles, where something has to be done, anything to stop these joyous fenians running amok, and winning in their country.

Oh for a Bob Kelly, its high time Celtic football club learned to speak in public, during our latest generation of domination, too often this great club remains silent and insular, we had bigger hills to die on than Focus, and didn’t, but Celtic need to take on a new route in communicating our position and status in modern day Scotland.

The AGM last week was surely the final straw in how not to treat the lifeblood of the club.

I think its fair to say that all sites have their own editorial slant, Paul chooses not to bite the hand that feeds, its his site afterall, and i have no issues with what he does with it (not trying to be magnanimous), what he writes or doesnt write.

i tend to reflect on others comments and then picture myself in the shoes of the writer, how else would anyone tolerate some of the things that are posted on here.

i have some similar thoughts on things as neganon, the same with others, though i do think its beneath contempt some of the crap posters get for simply having a differing view.

    eloquently written.

The question remains what can/should people do when, as is going to happen, the Board simply ignores the issues (or takes token steps,at best).

I will nail my colours to the mast … (I havbe done it before, so no surprise) …tell the club that we will not renew/purchase merchandise unless and until the Club (i) explains it inactions, and (ii) provides a plan going forward to protect and ensure the integrity of the Club, the safety of fans, etc.

I know my view is not poplular … but, it seems that last week’s fiasco may be a turning point for some people…

if not a boycott, what options are people (like you) considering.

If we beat Rosenborg we have 9 points – assume we then beat Salzburg at home 12 points total

If Leipzig beat Salzburg and then Rosenborg they also have 12 points

    And Salzberg would have 12

As we have lost the head to head with Leipzig – I think leipzig go through

We would need to beat Salzburg by more than they beat us to win the head to head

So will Salzburg allow Leipzig to beat them and take their chances against us !!!!

    OR

Will both Red Bull teams play out a draw meaning Salzburg are through (13 points) regardless of result in Glasgow – But would only need to avoid defeat in Glasgow to help Leipzig through – a draw would give Celtic 10 points – Leipzig would go through assuming they beat Rosenborg as they would have 10 points

But what will definitely not happen is Salzburg beating Leipzig as this makes it harder for Leipzig to qualify as Celtic would only need a draw against Salzburg regardless of what Leipzig do in their last game

Thursday if you like a bet Celtic to win away and Salzburg and Leipzig draw – win double

My understanding is that if 3 teams finish on 12 points, then goal difference in the games between the 3 teams decides it. I.e. Hard against Rosenberg goal difference is ignored.

We have to concentrate on beating Rosenborg, 1.0 is fine and then see what happens.

    Currently Salzburg are plus 3

Leipzig level and Celtic minus 3.

So I agree with you, everything points to a narrow Leipzig win, meaning we would have to beat Salzburg by 3 to qualify. I hope I’m wrong though.

Salzburg are undefeated at home for over 2 years, beat Leipzig away yet are available at 3/1 to win. Leipzig are slight odds on at 5/6.

its a start but dont know if it would do much damage, i think st drop in sales (put a nbr) would get there attention big time.

now i dont know what the merchandise sales figures are.

  15. MIKE IN TORONTO

Like you i live oversea’s so no idea how loss of merchandise sales would effect the boards thinking.

They have consistently shown that money is their number one priority.

Unfortunately the fans and team have paid the price for this strategy.

I have a fairly large Scottish family and a large proportion of them have season tickets.

After last weeks AGM i was surprised as for the first time some of them talked about considering chucking the football.

They are despondent about our boards acceptance of the corruption in the game and felt they no longer represented the spirit of Celtic.

Talk is easy as it’s mid season but will be interesting to see wether it manifests itself in action come renewal time?

  16. When the 800 hardcore bigot zombies came to Celtic park why couldn’t the police handle the situation

Aberdeen Hibs hearts take their allocation and it doesn’t require changes to the access and egress for the Celtic fans.

Why did the Huns game ? Why the crushes. Why supporters being redirected when trying to get in. If anything the Huns game should have been easier to police. They are in a small section. It has its own fenced off turnstiles. It’s segregated. So what changed in directions. Every Celtic fan could have used their normal access routes. With only one crossover point being the London road at their entrance. Why did the police find that hard to control.

For me it was one big police fluck up. Simple as that.

After the game rogue Huns were able to go towards dalmarnock station in between Celtic fans in cars swinging boots and punching.

  17. MIKE IN TORONTO

Celtic fans are deep down fed up with continual injustice, this is not transfer window or lack of spend debate or interpretation, where the board back a budget. The rank and file as you know, merely question the Celtic position, and have done since 2012, then they go and renew their season ticket, full stop, or ‘end of ‘ as a woman in my work says at the end of every sentence.

Anti Celtic Scotland goes way beyond the PLC mindset, where there are no Celtic activists or orators willing to speak out, or act, for a discriminated against, section of Scottish Society that just happen to have the best football club.

Its true yes we have a cross section of businessmen, where if Celtic were truly second best they’d be quick to play the hard done by card at every opportunity, but we’re not, we’re running amok with trebles, so everything is fine in the garden.

The board think Celtic begin and end at the sound of a whistle, when the support know that they don’t. Rory Bremner quips, and one liners at AGM’s don’t cut it with the Celtic support and haven’t since 2012 but it does not affect the support of Celtic, one iota.

The handling of ‘the Sevco conundrum ‘ and all of the problems it presents like ‘Police Scotland’ will undoubtedly lead to eventual changes at Celtic long, long before the alleged failure to buy better players, build better stands. or burn brighter lights.

We are ‘let down’ continually and the club should have responded all along the way juxtaposed with our continuing success, and someone has to remind Scotland that Rangers died, and we now have to thole a Sevco why shouldn’t it be their nemesis.

Anyway, it’s too big a subject for the internet people get bored and go to the game.
