Interesting angle in today’s Telegraph: “Celtic are the only club in Scotland, apart from Rangers, who are known to have used an EBT contract”. Why are we part of this conversation? Despite the millions of words written on the subject of EBTs over the last six years, there appears to be a curious misunderstanding about them.
Juninho arrived at Celtic with an EBT from earlier in his career. Celtic funded this Trust around the time the player left the club, informed HMRC about the transaction, and paid the tax due. No side letters (contracts) were issued with regard to this Trust. No information was hidden from HMRC or football authorities.
The conversation went a bit like this:
Celtic: Hi HMRC, Celtic here. We’ve paid Mr Juninho’s EBT £Xk. What is our tax position?
HMRC: £Yk tax is due on that payment.
Celtic: Thanks. Will pay today.
EBTs are in themselves not illegal, nor even immoral. They were introduced to allow employers a framework to give loans to employees. Many employers, formally or informally, give loans to employees to cover everything from crises to Christmas expenses. Or migration expenses, which is occasionally the case in football. That some use EBTs to attempt to put income beyond the reach of taxation is a reflection on those clubs, not others who openly declare EBT payments to HMRC and pay any corresponding tax.
The newspaper goes on to offer a defence against HMRC, almost as though it was dictated from David Murray himself: “it is believed that one argument against the supposition that Rangers secured players by means of EVTs (sic.) is that a range of variable inducements were in operation at that time and not only at Ibrox.
“Other avoidance schemes involved investment in such vehicles as film production companies and forestry development.”
Yes, a range of other inducements were available – legal ones. Other people legally used other schemes. It’s clarity of thought like this being a defence of Rangers that which put them into such a mess to begin with.
Delighted to read Rangers Tax Case back with such insight last night. Catch up with him here if you missed it.

Mike Ashley showed the way over the last few weeks by seeking judicial reviews on various matters. He is a Rangers (2012) shareholder.
Raised the issue of a Judicial Review a couple of years ago, asking how one would go about calling for one, and how much funding would have to be raised.
Would happily support this option if and when if became an issue to be addressed.
Good morning from a balmy east Florida coast.
Paul, you pulled a fast one today. Is the article not up an hour earlier?
In your face Melbourne Mick.

My daughter used to read this Blog but I don’t let her now because of tripe like this.
I really hope you can do something Paul67.

In absolute agreement.
That post by TD67 is disgraceful in its venom and is indeed personal insult.
I second the motion to have that deleted, with further censure.
There has always been the odd spat on the blog, but often in recent times the lack of civil debate and simple good manners are at an all time low.

Don’t know you, don’t want to either, I have filed you under the word, clipe, bringing your daughter into it, your business, you ever stop to think it’s maybe because you post tripe, she gets a riddy? Just a thought, troll that.

It is people like him who get Celtic a bad name.
He is attempting to bring the Blog down by enticing decent contributors to react to his continuous invective.
To have a wonderful poster like BMCUW take a break from here because of him is tragic.
Gordon64 has also left recently.
I know who I would rather be talking to on here.
Thanks for your support.
Personal insults are the number one cardinal sin on the blog.
Yet P67 allows it to go on, very strange.
Hello again all you young rebels.

Nice one.
Sorry ghuys just getting back to you all after the positive comments
after my post about our BBQ and fundraiser for the sick kids, had a
lot of CTV to catch up on and reading back on the last blog was
painful to say the least, just think we are better than that and i still
think a lot of the vitriol is caused by people not wanting to lose face.

Well that’s what you say, I don’t have proof, but I don’t make things up, it was a while ago, and the CT had a read over it that I do know, you and I will have to disagree on it, I know what I read, you say it didn’t happen. Fine.

I’m not suggesting that you are making things up but whoever wrote what you read might have been or got the context wrong.
From memory the resolution was first set out as a draft on CQN but subsequent work was done on it off line by a few with the knowledge of the rules to focus on the UEFA licence.
The final version was shown to CST at one of their meetings to gain support to publicise it.
This was done very quickly with barely a look at the actual words and based more on trust that those proposing knew what they were talking about on a complex issue of UEFA FFP rules.
After that the CST had no involvement in fact I think they felt let down when an adjournment was agreed prior to the AGM.
That came about as information not known during the drafting stage started to put together a narrative that Celtic realised put their opposition to Res12 into the very doubtful category.
The time since has been spent removing the doubt aided by new information becoming available earlier this year.
We are now talking possible criminal negligence and one way or another the SFA will be brought to account.
You can take that to the bank too.

Firstly, I am the first to admit that my level of contribution to the ole Blog over the years has been just slightly above zero. Repetitively bad early morning weather reports, the odd countdown (sleeps or hours) to forthcoming games and advice on which football teams not to bet. So what now follows will not stop the world turning or cause any cries of anguish.
I’ve been fed up for weeks with the general (though not universal) mud slinging, name calling, drivel on what was once the number one go-to site in all of t’internet. Taking 5 – 10 minutes to actually get onto the site at work has been a further annoyance. So time for me to take a break.
Might return in 2016 if things improve. And will still have face to face chats at The Corner pre-games.
Happy Christmas! And, please, Be Nice!!!

You ask what is plan B on Res12.
You and others misunderstand what is going on.
As a member club Celtic cannot take the kind of action individual shareholders can try to take.
Even if they did it would be portrayed as Celtic going after Rangers instead of what it is. Supporters going after the SFA for mis-governing Scottish football for years. in favour of one club. Something fans of other clubs now see
It’s a matter of boxing clever.
I’d love a guy like you beside me in the trenches because whilst you were going over the top to be gunned down I’d be sneaking around their back with a land mine. :)
Where are we going next? A bit of organising to do there involving funding first unless the SFA do bow to pressure already being exerted.
After that it’s game on.
