Spinning Struth, high integrity and some great Celtic fans

749

It will make little difference to those who really should be paying attention.  Malcolm Murray left the Rangers International board yesterday with a statement to fans unlike anything previously heard from a departing director of a Scottish football club.  His warning is loud and clear, “Events of the last year have seen behaviour that would make the late, great, Bill Struth spin in his grave (no, he doesn’t mean the fact that all faiths are now employed at Ibrox)”.

It’ll make little difference because the groundwork has already been laid to ignore anything Malcolm Murray says by those who in previous years did the bidding of David Murray, Craig Whyte and Charles Green.  Notions of having a club “run by men of the highest integrity” don’t fit the narrative, talk of “mysterious individuals” will not be heard.

We’re now watching the equivalent of the opening scenes of Police Academy 4, the same farce will unfold with increasingly less interest from the wider world.

I know lots of good Celtic fans, lots and lots of them. Respect today to those who buy Overseas Season Tickets, meaning they can attend five games per season, but they buy tickets to 16 games for underprivileged supporters.

We are part of a genuinely incredible body of people. Stories like this simply don’t happen elsewhere. If you’re part of ‘the programme’, well done.

Just checked, Police Academy 4 was subtitled ‘Citizens on Patrol’. If only!!

As long we got somebody of same ability coming in to replace what has left, then selling likes of wanyama etc.. is acceptable.

Ajax, Porto, PSV, Hereenveen to name a few have done it over the years yet sustained the same level of success.

Can be done and if scouts have identified a simlair player if not better than Hooper and Wanyama for cheaper wages then we sell and make a profit.

  3. I reckon the twelve million wil be used to get a left sidedplayer, manager identified, repalcement for Wanyama and a creative mide in (Lubo mould).

The way we have been scouting and picking buys like Wanyam etc.. over past few seasons fees won’t even make the 12 million.

For Celtic it is all about pragmatism. I’m happy with that at the moment.

What do you think our ambition should be?

We are too good for Scotland and not nearly good enough for Europe. Limbo mate, that is where we are. But it could be worse, we could have been born devoted East Fife. or QOS, or Hibs Supporters.

And why not,I hear you ask.

  7. Wgs -it’s highly unlikely we will be able to replace victor with anywhere near the same quality and I doubt we will even try. I do think that the general thrust of celtics strategy is correct. But what gets forgotten is that to be successful you need to be pragmatic and sometimes buy older players to get a blend within the team. We don’t even try and do that.

If we somehow qualify for the cl it will be in spite of this. No one is asking or to my knowledge have ever asked for celtic to get into significant debt. But as ever with celtic we swing too far in the other direction.

  8. I remember Kenny Dalglish day, and I remember Charlie Nicholas leaving with indecent haste ( and making a pig’s ear of it )

I don’t have that feeling about Victor Wanyama leaving even although he’s a good player with great potential, the inevitability of 12.5m sees my club financially secure – with no excuse not to dominate the Scottish game and make a serious effort in Europe again.

    Time will be the judge.

  10. A stor I accept we are in a weird position. However a bit more ambition would increase our chances of continued cl participation and create a virtious cycle. Right now we appear to be not even trying. Stein as above.

If we are going for a young left sided player then Stuart Armstrong would be worth a shout. Really improved last season, and will kick on again this season. Both Neil and Jackie rate him highly.

I’m not sure Celtic lack ambition. We have sold a very good player, but Victor is not so important to the team that we will collapse without his presence.

I am disappointed Victor has gone, but in my time supporting Celtic we have lost much better players and survived. And it is worth remembering he decided to go – he could have stuck it out at Celtic if he wanted to. If Victor wanted to play in the Champions League he would have stayed.

Like you have already alluded – we are in an environment where we can’t turn down £12m for a player two years after he arrived for £900,000.

It’s excellent business and common sense to accept the offer. Celtic have a good system in place on finding promising players. They don’t all work out (because no club can be 100% successful in recruitment) but we have enough resources at the club to qualify for the Champions League without Victor.
