SPL dominoes might all fancy ditching HMRC debt

1072

It’s difficult not to associate Hearts’ owner, Vladimir Romanov’s outburst on their club website yesterday with the current issue over Rangers finances, which could soon see the SPL, the SFA and the media take sides between Rangers and their creditors, in particular HM Revenue and Customs.

Romanov’s rant on the demise of the Scottish game was ignorable until he dragged in the “tax authorities” for blame.  As you and I know, the tax authorities don’t play favourites, they collect vat, income, corporation and other taxes in line with the law.

Hearts failed to pay player wages last month and Romanov now says, “there is no point is spending millions to watch someone else’s show”.  Most of Hearts debt is owed to Romanov’s own bank but if player wages are unpaid there is a good chance HMRC will also be outstanding, explaining the “tax authorities” reference.

If a new football club playing at Ibrox is ushered into the SPL with a points tally calculated from the position of a defunct Rangers you can expect a gold-rush of clubs ready to flush their debts to the country, and history, away.

Well done to STV who yesterday revealed the actual decision making process which would be put in place to judge an application to join the league midseason or at any other time.  The SPL board, by simple majority, have the decision, while the SFA need to ratify membership.

If the SPL board vote to reward bad debtors’ shares in their league what incentive would most clubs have to pay their bills?  Fortunately, our history is more valuable than any amount of cash.

The new issue of CQN Magazine will be out next week, let me know if you would like to advertise, celticquicknews@gmail.com.

Had to admire the penultimate caller to Radio Clyde tonight.

‘We will still have a moral victory if Celtic need to beat Rangers to the title with the help of the courts’.

What do you mean was he taking to task? Of course he wasn’t!

IMO Celtic can’t preempt this situation. Only when something actually occurs ie. Hearts/Rangers officially incur an insolvency event can the club officially react. Preempting an insolvency event with a statement would a) be viewed as just sour grapes and b) probably be illegal due to PLC rules and the possible effects one of these clubs going BOOM!!! would have on Celtic and it’s shareholders.

Oddly they used to have a chart on their website which i linked to here in the past, showing a contribution (i think from government funding) to Scottish football. The figures was into the millions, but there was never a breakdown of that figure available.

    On the Scottish Football Partnership:

“The Facilities Strategy Award helps Clubs meet the strict Club Licence requirements relating to infrastructure projects and the Community Youth Award supports community development programmes.” There was a significant increase last year.

    Grant to The Scottish Football Partnership 2010 – £2,250,000 2009 – £700,000

Provision for bad debts – £567,334

My point being, i want to know how much they’ve awared the huns and mini-huns in the last few years.

It’s difficult for any of us to know what really goes on during these contract negotiations. Manager agrees a top figure for budget on a player along with other criteria, PL meets the agent and keep it as low as possible. The real culprits would usually be the agents imo. Most of the criticism of PL to date aren’t about contract negotiations, they’re about player fees (again mostly speculation, as who of us knows??).

Not much to get worked up about imo. It’s in our interests for PL to keep the wages at an acceptable level and in line with the player’s worth.

I’ll leave contracts for the money men to sort out. Dan is getting on a bit, and may be on the decline, although defenders can often last into their mid-late thirties. Loovens is young and I’d be for keeping him. Sweden fans really rate Dan, while Cardiff fans are perplexed at our attitude to Loovens. Don’t forget these guys have a 92% success rate together, still, and were one of the the mainstays behind Celtic’s best defensive record since the Martin O’Neill days.

I think they’re both good, no more than good. I won’t fall for the hysteria surrounding them.

O’Dea is no worse than what we have now, In fact I would put him ahead of the other 2. So if there was a choice to be made between the 3, I would pick O’Dea for a new contract.

  29. Remember this little story

THE tycoon behind the £32million bid to buy Rangers is being sued over a £90,000 bill, we can reveal.

A writ was served on Craig Whyte’s firm on Friday – hours after he arrived in Glasgow for crucial talks about his proposed Ibrox takeover.

His Tixway firm are being sued by One Stop Roofing, run by Albion Rovers manager Paul Martin. They are based less than half a mile from the Rangers ground.

Martin, 45, and co-director Robert Jenkins, 43, claim Whyte’s firm ordered thousands of pounds worth of building materials in June 2009.

The businessmen also say the firm run by Whyte – who denies their claims – failed to maintain a repayment plan thrashed out at the start of the year.

Sources close to the pair claim the 39 year-old paid two instalments before failing to come up with any more money.

Glasgow-based McRoberts Solicitors served the writ against Tixway in a bid to recover the cash.

Whyte and his wife Kim are the only directors of Tixway, who have an office in Glasgow’s Bath Street.

A source said: “Martin and Jenkins feel they’ve been very patient and have waited long enough for their cash.

“The amount of money we’re talking about doesn’t seem like a huge sum for a wealthy businessman – but it is to a small business.

“No one wanted to start legal proceedings but there appeared to be no other option.

“Martin and Jenkins have tried to get Whyte round the table and sort everything out but it’s proved to be impossible.

“They are surprised a man who’s buying a football club like Rangers for millions of pounds is not prepared to pay a £90,000 bill.”

But Whyte denied his company owed the money. A spokesman said: “His firm have done business with One Stop Roofing but all bills have been paid in full.

“Any legal action will be defended robustly.”

Lifelong Gers fan Whyte is set to buy Rangers in a £32.5million deal with Londonbased property developer Andrew Ellis.

The pair are pledging to wipe out the club’s £27million debt and pay another £5.5million to shareholders – around £4.6million of which will go to club owner Sir David Murray.

Whyte splits his time between his home in London and Grantown-on-Spey, where he has spent millions on restoring Castle Grant.

He started to make his fortune through a host of companies with interests in retail, construction, heavy plant hire, security services and industrial and office cleaning.

His specialism is taking over ailing firms and turn them into money-makers.

Whyte heads London-based venture capital firm Liberty Capital, who have operations in the Netherlands, Switzerland, Russia and France, and they provide funding to struggling businesses needing a cash boost.

Sources claim that Whyte’s firm Tixway UKonly got involved after One Stop Roofing refused to supply a firm owned by a friend of Whyte and who share offices with Tixway.

One Stop Roofing were reluctant to do business with Snowcast because they could not obtain credit risk insurance against the firm.

Yesterday, Martin and Jenkins refused to comment. During a playing career which spanned 17 years, Martin played for Kilmarnock, Hamilton Accies, Dumbarton and Albion Rovers.

Glasgow Sheriff Court confirmed that a writ against Tixway UK had been served.

The odds against that being coincidence are gi-humongous.
