Sports Direct with humiliating control

1208

Records published by the Intellectual Property Office yesterday show Sports Direct own quite a lot of trademarks, including:

Rangers
Scope of trademark: organisation of sporting activities.
This property has not been licenced to the football club, or joint ventures like Rangers Retail Ltd.  Sports Direct own the rights to call a football team Rangers.

Rangers (again)
Scope: from clothing to trinkets and everything in between.
Owned by Sports Direct, licenced to Rangers Retail Ltd

Glasgow Rangers Football Club
Scope: clothes trinkets, etc.
Owned by Sports Direct, licenced to Rangers Retail Ltd

RFC, Broxi Bear, The Gers, Follow Follow, Ibrox, Rangers News, Rangers Travel and all the crests, badges and logos are all owned by Sports Direct and licenced to Rangers Retail Ltd, which is 76% owned by the Sports Direct group.

So if the club want to call themselves Rangers, or Glasgow Rangers, they need to cut a deal with Mike Ashley.  The most humiliating aspect of the whole thing is that the new board appeared to know nothing about this until the Intellectual Property Office published the details yesterday.  The lack of due diligence is breathtaking.

The only things Ashley seems to have ignored is that pejorative nickname they complain about so much, and the phrase Murray Park, although he has security over the training ground of that name.

We warned them repeatedly.  Ashley was in control and had the opportunity to ensure he got what he wanted before the EGM.  One of the richest men in Europe, he is a formidable opponent and known to be utterly ruthless.

You can’t bully him.  Better to recognise this reality and accept your subservient future than create a scenario where even another liquidation event would not free the ‘Rangers’ football brand from the ironclad yolk of a man you’ve made your enemy.

What have the lemmings done to themselves?  We were told Mike Ashley was a business man and he would acquiesce as this was just business.  In the history of business miscalculations this is up there with the guy at Pye who rejected The Beatles.

It’s all their own work, they can’t blame the SFA, SPL, SFL, Celtic, Her Majesty’s Revenue’, the BBC or Craig Whyte.  A recovery which would have been difficult enough is now completely and predictably wrecked.

Fancy a trip to Dublin for the Ireland-Scotland game in June?  There’s a bus leaving Glasgow with Ireland and Scotland (but all Celtic) fans.  Two nights in a Dublin hotel, travel and match ticket among the Ireland fans for £200.  Let me know if you’re interested, celticquicknews@gmail.com

My first big game at Celtic Park was against Basle. I think it went to extra time. What a night.

  3. A Hunskelping story with a difference.

In the mid-to-late 80s I worked in an office in Bothwell Street, Glasgow. Adi_Dasler knows what I am talking about. There were quite a few Tims in the office and only one Gers man named Richard.

Richard was a decent guy who was an Ibrox season ticket holder and also played cricket for Drumpellier Cricket Club out of Coatbridge. Drumpellier CC was a bastion of freemasonry and a hotbed of Rangers fans. Several carloads used to leave from there for Ibrox every home game.

One day Richard asked me to form a team amongst my colleagues to take part in a charity quiz at the club. I was happy to oblige and 5 of us, all Celtic mad, formed a team called Tam’s Tims. We were taking a chance going into such a hunnish environment with that name but Richard assured us of safe passage.

Believe it or not, we romped the quiz and were politely applauded as we stepped up on stage to collect our winnings which included an impressive trophy. We stayed around for a few celebratory beers but as the night wore on, we felt the hostility rise, so we made a hasty and quiet exit.

Several months later Richard invited us back for a second quiz. I questioned whether the patrons of Drumpellier CC would stomach another visit form Tam’s Tims but he assured me that on the contrary, they were looking forward to winning their trophy back from “the Fenian interlopers”.

We won it again and this time we did not hang around after lifting the trophy as the natives were very restless.

A few months later we were back again for the hat-trick. We duly won it again and this time there were jeers and boos as Tam’s Tims were asked to come up to collect their trophy.

The chairman actually used the words, “The winners are Tam’s Tims and I invite them to come up to receive the trophy on this, their final visit.”

That was his way of telling us not to come back. We were forced to retire undefeated and this time the bears were growling and spitting blood, even the women, as we left with the spoils.

3 victories and all in enemy territory.

    Boy it felt good.

Have added the raffle to CQNBookstore.com

TBJ has organised a CQN Memorial stone at Celtic Park for the CQN’ers we have lost.

He has funded this himself in the meantime and tonight CQN is having a raffle to re-imburse TBJ.

Tickets are £5 each and you can buy 1, 2 or 4. There is a small handling fee from the payment company (Stripe) but apart from that ALL funds will be passed to TBJ.

When we reach surpass the total needed – around £300 – we will stop the raffle. CQN will pick 5 winners at random – from the CQN Beanie – and each winner will get any two CQN books of your choice and some whisky.

I would like the families of all departed cqnrs to be aware of the stone on their loved ones memory

Not sure how we communicate it .

Apparently I get a certificate sent .. They offered a replica stone at £40 each .

I thought it would be fantastic to give one of each to the family’s but not sure of the feasibility of that regards addresses

It would be good if we could get one for each family now and in the future but again not sure if they reproduce replicas after the stone is down

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    evening CQN

    just a suggestion to TBJ

if you were to order one replica then i’m sure it could be used to make a mould which could then be used to produce our own replicas using a resin kit if the families of our departed were to like one.?

People Used to Say l was a Jinx to Celtic..

l Left Glasgow in 1983 it seemed like every time l came Home for a Game Celtic Lost..although l was home and went to most of the Centenary Season games but Moved to London before the Season finished..;-)

Just read this by Bill Leckie wrote after l moved to Australia in 97′..

What is not up for argument, though, is that Celtic are in a far worse state

without him (Burns) than they were with him. Rangers are leaving them further and

further behind with every passing day and there is no white smoke from the

Parkhead chimney to signal a comeback.

The Ibrox men are, I reckon, one more signing away from finally leaving

their greatest rivals – and, therefore, the rest of us – so far behind them

they will be no more than a dancing dot on the horizon.

Who is that signing? I’d go for Batistuta – though Muz says no – but whoever

they end up with he will be big time and he will be here soon.

It’s enough to make any Celtic fan hide behind the couch. Sorry? Oh, you

    already are.

The Mrs bought me a stone-slab for my 60th, we got the certificate in the week saying it had been laid, it was bought in Nov last year, she also was told that a picture would be included with the cert, it wasn’t, no a big deal as I have asked someone to take a pic ofr me, it would be good to see where it has been laid, limited letters were allowed, still, the club make a few bob.
