Stiliyan, Henrik, Scott, Brendan, Stoichkov and Mendieta

456

I listened to Stiliyan Petrov talk calmly about cancer yesterday, as he sat with Liverpool’s James Milner ahead of your Foundation’s Match for Cancer next month.  Just a few decades ago, his recovery would be considered miraculous.

Cancer will affect one in every two of us.  That rate is higher than ever, as people live longer, but, what was a death sentence all too recently, is now treatable and often curable.

If you have been around CQN for long enough, you will know stories like Stiliyan’s are not always how things conclude.  We have lost too many of our number, and more of our loved ones, to this awful disease.

So the work goes on.  In memory of those we have lost, in appreciation of those who have come through successful treatment, and in that hope that our futures are increasingly spared.  Cancer success stories are one of the wonders of the modern world, and while millions suffer this illness, millions more contribute to the cause of treating and eradicating it.

The game itself will be a gathering of the Celtic clans, not just because of the way this disease has touched so many, but because Henrik will once more grace Celtic Park, as will Lubo, the brilliant Hristo Stoichkov, and the phenomenal Gaizka Mendieta.

Scott Brown will play too and Brendan is manager of Stiliyan’s team.  The great and the good are touched by this affliction, which is rapidly being controlled thanks to the efforts of millions.

The game takes place on Sunday 8 September (it’s an international break).  Tickets cost £14 or £6 concessions.  You can buy them here.

I Look forward to seeing you there.

Welcome to Celtic, Daniel Arzani.  The 19-year-old winger-come-central defender (lighten up, honestly!) arrives on a two year loan, having joined Manchester City a few days ago.

A word of caution – an away game in the League Cup is not the game I would choose to play tomorrow.  Get the job done professionally, Celtic.

  1. I would like to welcome Daniel Arzani to Celtic and hope that he lives up to the hype, and not turn out to be another Charly Musonda.

However, at the end of the day he is not our player but I understand we have a buy out clause at tthe end of his two year stint with us.

I also wonder what players like Lewis Morgan and especially Mikey Johnston make of it all?

Expecting BR to put out a near full-strength side today.

    HH!!

  2. Good morning, friends, from a pretty wet, dreich and grey East Kilbride. But in just 200 minutes or so, The Bhoys will be in the tunnel, ready to blow Partick away. A better few days lie ahead.

Just read through the night-shift…you taking over the blog…looking for one of your posts is like waiting on a bus and then all of a sudden…hundreds…:)

The basic mistakes in both games detracted from what i thought was decent enougjh performances without setting the heather on fire .

  5. It’s been a tough few weeks for all involved with Celtic. Good debate on here, when not too personal.

I’m glad the discussion has moved away from Rodgers vs Lawwell. I don’t believe such a binary discussion is helpful.

To have gone from the highs of the open top bus to where we are today has taken real negligence from many.

Qualify for the Europa and have some good, close games, win the league and the Scottish. I’d be happy with that.

Finally, I believe we need to cease all chat re 10iar. I don’t believe it is healthy. We have many battles to win before we’re even close.

The feel good factor starts back today. No prisoners

  6. ‘A Grand Old Team ready to rise from the ashes’. Good stuff by Andrew McFadyen in todays Herald on efforts to resurrect Belfast Celtic. ‘When we had nothing we had Belfast Celtic and when we had Belfast Celtic we had everything’.

    —————

From what I saw of Arsani in the world cup, he was (relatively) more robust than Musonda. Actually, I’ve rarely seen any player look more like a wee boy than Charlie. Mikey certainly has the skill but needs a bit more physicality about him. Maybe he’s grown/toughened up a wee bit since last year. Morgan, I’ve not seen enough of yet.

A rare away day for me looking forward to it,I haven’t been to

a game at Firhill for year’s.

Would like to see sinky start, hope he can build on his goal in

Athens,he’s a player who needs to feel confident if Celtic are at

it there should be some low hanging fruit for him.

  9. MARSPAPA,

I agree. Time to move on and strengthen because as The Boss says. Celtic have made others around them Better.

I’d expect a full strength team Today. Anyone with actual knocks will be kept from the fray.

Good morning pal . Hope alls going well with you and yours .

Hav’nt read the blog late on for a while , so , it was quiet i enjoyed just playing some of the random stuff i listen to knowing it would’nt upset anyone .

  11. Does Peter Lawells son still work at Man City ?

Who signed Arzani btw just out of interest ?

  12. Goooooood Morning CQN – ???????

Have tried to stay away from blog and current debate on Champions League.

In cold light of day, we are not a current set up, champions league level team, we only like this for the prestige and money it brings

I have hated seeing/ being at the recent champion league game heavy defeats

What I do think, we should be competing as a team at a far better level, for the player expenditure we have – spent over £55 m on salaries last season

I do not blame Brendan for this, he is desperately trying to change the way we play, to improve in this arena.

Have to be honest, not even sure we will perform great in any Europa league set up – we think our team is better than it actually is

Now – we desperately need to improve the standard of player we are recruiting, now there is problem !!!!!

We are constantly signing projects, yes the managers role is to develop these

So why are we criticising players as we try to develop their game time and experience ( and I am also guilty of this)

Kris Ajer, Jack Hendry, Kouassi Eboue etc, have combined less than 150 games

We need to give some space and let them develop – and I have no real idea how good they will be.

I have little interest in this betfred cup – yes adds to Treble, but for me is a meaningless cup in present day, scrap it, or play our u-21 in it.

So Onto today – how about Hendry at right back ? He played there frequently for Dundee

Give Kouassi another run out in midfield ? How about young Aitchison getting a run out

Do we have any other young CH’s with potential?

( incidentally I do not see a 23 year old as young in modern football – so do expect better from Hendry, even though in- experienced, not young)

    Hail Hail

  13. Oh

Very very Hoooooopy birthday Lennybhoy ?

Forgot, would also involve Mickey Johnston today

  14. Uncle Jimmy

I agree with your general sentiment but ( of course !) ,this bit I am not so sure about:

” To have gone from the highs of the open top bus to where we are today has taken real negligence from many.”

IMO, the MSSM is the main player in creating the atmosphere `where we are today`.

The facts are that we didn`t get John McGinn, Boyatta wants to go and we lost two eminently losable games.

    a) Not signing McGinn MIGHT be regretted in the future but makes ,IMO, no appreciable difference to the current standard.

    b) Although I have always rated Boyata, few others did . Suddenly, he has become a far better player and also a horrible character for seemingly wanting a move to greater riches.Hardly an unusual phenemenon in the world of professional football.

    c) Losing games, no matter how important and how painful, remain an integral part of the whole that is football.

Had the MSSM taken the above attitude to `recent events`, I firmly believe that we would be talking of Celtic`s chance of another treble or similar topics.

Let me end by saying that I am in total agreement re 10 IAR. Pretty Hunnish for me.

    JJ

    PS….and good morning ,Jobo !

  15. Hot Smoked

    Good morning.

When I talk of negligence, I refer specifically to the lack of new defenders coming in.

We conceded a cheap goal to newly promoted Livingston and 3 to ‘start of their season’ AEK. I believe we should have done better over the summer recruitment wise.

As far as the mssm go, like many, I have genuinely not read or listened for years though I assume they’re peddling the same anti Celtic rhetoric as they always have.

    Enjoy the game today sir

    Hail Hail!

  17. Play a few of the young uns today. But don’t make too many changes. That is unfair on those coming in. Lewis Morgan (if fit) or Mikey Johnston. Izzy to give Tierney a rest. Broony needs a rest too.

  18. Norriem

I like the idea of Hendry at right back. I rate him highly and if The Greatest Fans in the World don` destroy him, I believe he will become the standard of player we require for European games. I feel the same can be said of Ajer.

So, in a not too distant futur, we may have the following capable of competing at European Level:

    Keeper;

Hendry , Ajer, New Guy, Tierney.

Forrest, Brown ( for a while yet) Ntcham,

    Mcgregor/Rogic

    Dembele / Edouard.

That eleven would still leave dome top players on the bench and give me confidence.

  20. Drive by posting — had to say something in the face of all this reaction / revisionism regarding our terrible start to the season both on and off the pitch.

At the heart of this issue is that we have two competing visions of the future.

Moneyball done badly by a second rate property sector beancounter.

Growth agenda on the pitch based on better coaching and player investment.

The first strategy emptied the LL Upper sections.

The second strategy filled those sections and filled our coffers.

There is no debate to be had on this topic .

No matter what the PL loving middle managers say their man lost.

The facts speak for themselves — Moneyball drove people away.

The football / growth agenda brought them back.

PL and his ego have failed us at every turrn over the past 13/14 years.

This summer and his wilful truculence over transfers has taken this to a new level.

We are a house divided and if it continues we will fail.

PL needs to have his role changed to remove him from the internal workings of the club.

His behaviour this summer reminds me of the bo weevil — tearing the heart out of the club and it’s future for the sake of his own personal agenda.

He is not going to go quietly.

He has AstroTurf out their to puch his agenda.

Plus a chorus of middle managers to back it up with technobabble and assoterd KPIs.

There is a reason for UK business failure over the past 40 years.

Primary reason was Maggie but a clueless nomenclatura didn’t help.

Anyway we are in a bad place.

    TFOD1 @ Aug 1997 comes to mind.

They couldn’t lose but they did — we are in the same boat.

Support BR — improve the squad through real investments.

The SFA / media / MIB ludges are up for it big time.

  21. My friends in Celtic

Watched some videos of Daniel Arzani. He looks as if he can be a direct replacement for Patrick Roberts.

Born in Iran he had the choice of representing Iran or Australia. He choose Australia subsequently becoming the youngest ever player to get in the World cup squad and then the youngest player to actually play.

To achieve that honour he must be an exceptional talent and will hopefully be a welcome addition to our squad.

Yes I feel sorry for our own youngsters, but we must make availability for exceptional talent. We have been a victim of our own success.

I think it is time to potentially forgo the ” treble, treble “and blood our youngsters in the domestic cups.

This can still be a great season if we want it enough.

I am not a Robot , sorry Zombie which I would be if I was posting on a dead blog. It is an incredibly stupid statement and downright insulting to the many posters and lurkers on here.

As MIT stated, there are many persons on here who give their considerable time and energy to help many good causes. They never look for any thanks or personal gain. This is what makes CQN stand out from the crowd and will ensure CQN 20 will become a reality.

Many thanks to Paul 67 for giving us this platform that has brought so much good . Lesser men would have walked with the unacceptable personal abuse. The blog needs opinion from all spector of the Celtic family, disagreement with the host is healthy but leave out unwarranted personal abuse.

HH to all and COYBIG today.

  22. Uncle Jimmy

Like yourself, I have neither read nor listened to the MSSM but have watched occasionally. I base my opinion on the many comment I hear from others who do read/listen/watch then make their own minds up. It is obviously just a coincidence that those personal opinions are all the same :-))

As regards today`s game, I feel Thistle are a weaker team this year so I don`t envisage too many problems.

  24. If I’m reading it correctly, Chairbhoy thinks that the club were OK with Boyata leaving but Brendan was not, and stopped it. Yet this flies in the face of what BR said on 22 Dec. 2017:

“Rodgers, however, has said that players wishing to leave the club is a ‘natural part’ of football.

“There’s just a natural process here in terms of a player maybe going,” the manager told talkSPORT. “There’s always that sort of moral issue.

“If a player’s on a certain amount of money here and he’s offered four or five times more than that in what is a very short career as a player.

“That’s nothing to do with loyalty, that’s just their life and their profession. It’s very hard for a club to stand in the way of a player. And if the club gets the money, it’s a good bit of business.”

It’s a strange one. £9m for Boyata? I would have taken the hand off them.

Someone is not telling the truth.

  25. Dexter P. Bampot on

The Rangers (2012)- aka the financial basket case- according to their manager, are looking to sign 2 more players to cope with Europa League. That would be signings 12 and 13.

Not saying their signings are world class but their efforts from a limited financial position are an embarrassment to cash-rich Celtic.

They are backing an unproven manager. We are not backing a proven manager.

  26. `There is no debate to be had on this topic `

    Followed a little later by:

`PL and his ego have failed us at every turrn over the past 13/14 years.`

The past 13/14 years have been a failure? Wow.

    Great post!

This blog does a hell of a lot more good than some suggest.

If the moaners would come along to a HOOT they’d view the blog differently.

  28. Arzani is a project and that is why it is a two year loan, the idea being we will develop him in year one and see the best of him in the second year.

I would think Edouard is the preferred option on the left wing when fit. Forrest likewise on the right. Mcgregor is probably first back up on the left followed by Sinclair and Morgan back up to Forrest on the right. Arzani and Johnston will make up the numbers for the majority of this season i would imagine, or Johnston may benefit from a loan. I would be surprised if Jonny Hayes is still at the Club come the end of the month.

  29. Dexter B

` but their efforts from a limited financial position`.

It is their `financial position` which bothers me. Where is the money coming from?

Also, I would say it is much easier to buy players who would improve Sevco than it is for Celtic to do likewise.

Andy Murray will find it relatively easy to go from 845th (?) in the Rankings to , say, 20th. From 20th to 1st would be much more difficult.Same for us, I feel.
