Back in the 90s, when we struggled to achieve much, we appeared to have the Midas Touch when it came to signing strikers. The Three Amigos, Henrik and even big Mark(o) made the job look simple. It was keepers and the like we had trouble signing back then.
The litany of strikers who have trudged through Celtic Park in recent seasons provides sharp contrast to earlier times. Scott McDonald, Gary Hooper and Leigh Griffiths are the only strikers with a half decent scoring record since the departure of The Swede 12 years ago. Since then we’ve been home to many and various strays, from Dion Dublin to the Miku-Lassad twins, Kazim-Richards, Cole, Scepovic and Guidetti.
A few of these worked on paper (Scepovic and Guidetti) but the return on our money has been painful.
Getting it right in this department is important for Brendan Rodgers but I’d caution judging too much on what a player looks like on paper. I remember the comments section when McDonald (largely sceptical) and Griffiths (vehemently opposed by many) joined.
There are lessons from elsewhere too. Markus Rosenberg scored 20 goals in five seasons (none in 18 months at West Brom) before pitching up at his first club Malmo and eliminating Ronny Deila’s Celtic. Rosenberg was 32-years-old at the time but Malmo knew what they would get from him.
I’m not particularly inspired by any of the strikers we’re being publicly linked with but I’d take a player the manager knows and trusts can do the job before someone who shakes out of the scouting DVDs.
Chris Sutton Night, Irvine CSC
The Irvine Celtic Supporters’ Club are hosting a Chris Sutton evening on Friday, 24 June, at their social club in the town. Tickets are available for £10 by calling the club (evenings only) on 01294 271967.
If you are from the area, or fancy a good night out in Ayrshire with a Celtic striker who looked good on paper, looked better on the field, and delivered some of our best memories in the last 40 years, get along to see him – and bring your camera.

Oh fir flux sake!!
I made an erse o that eh? :)

If I had a choice of any player joining us, it would be Walters. Always thought he was a right good player.
Geordie
After reading Beatbhoy`s `Weld un ` pun, I thought your `solders` was intentional and that I just couldn`t work out the joke. Have I still missed it?

Fair enough. Personally, I would go for Ronaldo, Messi or Pogba.

No worries. The problem will iron itself out.
As a matter of interest, would any of you have been happy had we signed Joey barton?
JJ
Sweden unsurprisingly, opt for the flat pack four.
JJ,
Solders was a predictive faux pas.
Typing, thinking and working is harder that it looks. Or at least I make it look hard :)
HH

Interesing that the previous post is from I`VEHADTOCHANGEMYNAME!
Cheerio for now,
JJ (!)
JJ,
Re Barton.
Hell no. Hand on heart, and I’m not just saying this as he’s ‘signed’ for the newhuns, but I’d be gutted if we signed him.
Good enough player but a toad of a man.
No offence to toads.
HH
Hit it..
Oh John you should have buried that.

Come on Ireland..
Missed the first 15,horrible hun boss.
C’mon Ireland.
Geordie
I get the feeling he is trying to become a new and better person but the old one is still in there. He will crack a few time, I am sure but will receive help from the MIB playing for Sev. He wouldn`t have finished many games for us!
Cheerio again,
JJ

Barton would fit right in to our new culture:- Alcohol & Gambling. Adding thuggery wouldn’t make much of a difference. :)
MWD away to pop his Tin helmet on
Off the bar.

LOL – In other words there’s no a waiting list CSC
Un feckin’ lucky off the bar…Mon the Ireland
Ireland soooooh unlucky.
Last week when there was all that talk of the sale of season books, my Dad asked me if I had got mine. Assured him I had; so today he adds that he wished he was joining me. He’s only 93 and, of course, went everywhere home and away, back in the day.
Silly yellow for McCarthy. Lustig going off injured. Looks like a groin strain.
I don’t think there’s a bigger idiot anywhere commentating on football than that balloon Lawrenson
Lustig off injured for Sweden just before HT with looks like a groin strain.
Mikel Lustig off. Injured once again……………………..
Lustig injured…..again.
Celtic fans familiar with the sight go Big Mik hirpling aff…
