Stuck in a league without competition also has benefits

519

When the Champions League draw was made, I feared we would face Anderlecht at home on the final game after five defeats.  This would not necessarily have been the end of our interest in European football, but it would have damaged the momentum in the club in recent months.

You will remember, ahead of match day five, we discussed that the Anderlecht-Bayern Munich game was probably more important to our season than the PSG-Celtic game.  As it transpired, Bayern’s second half winner made all the difference to the second half of our season.

News last night that Celtic are the only group stage qualifier from the Champions Pot to still be in European competition offer some comfort; outcomes could have been a lot worse.

While European football is the custard in our doughnut, all I hear from is Celtic fans who are grateful it is over for a couple of months.  We have an unbeaten record to further and two games a week until the January break.

It can be pretty horrible, a huge club stuck in a minor league without competition, but it offers us respite, an opportunity to recharge, experiment and return afresh.

Hard to take him seriously , he totally overdoes the Marlon Brando bit. He might as well go the whole way and stuff cotton wool in his cheeks!

Peaky is still one of my favourite shows, though.

    Good Afternoon Folks.

We now have no European Football till February and it will give the players a chance to recharge their batteries after a hectic schedule and, if the opportunity presents itself, it gives Brendan the chance to strengthen the squad in key areas with a view to making a greater impact in Europe come February.

The draw will be tough no matter what but we can progress if, and only if, we play to our strengths and do not let other teams dominate both us and the ball.

Hopefully, in the intervening period, we can stretch our lead in the league and get that particular trophy half way into the bag.

The transfer window just might be interesting. But I stress the “might”.

Can I thank all of those who have donated to the Mary’s Meals appeal. The help given so far has been absolutely fabulous and will make a huge difference.

So that everyone knows what this is about I will explain.

Last year myself and some others from Balfron in Stirlingshire sponsored a school of 265 pupils in Liberia through Mary’s Meals and so we fed those kids for a year.

As a result of the kids being fed one square meal a day, the school roll has jumped from 265 kids to 805!

To feed 805 kids this years costs £11,190 but for every £1 donated before 31st December this will be counted as £2 thanks to the generosity of some wealthy benefactors who have agreed to fund match Mary’s Meals donations.

So, Before 31st December I am trying to raise £5,595 to feed this school, and of that sum we have already raised £1320.50 leaving a balance of £4,724.50 to get in the door over the next 3 weeks.

As it costs £13.90 to feed a child for an entire year, I am looking for roughly 307 people to sponsor one of these children by donating £13.90 plus gift aid.

There are various fundraising drives ongoing, but to make the most of the “double the money” offer from Mary’s Meals we need to get as much in the door before 31st December as possible.

So, if any of you who have not donated so far have a couple of quid spare then please consider making a donation via the link below.

Funding a school in the second year is always more difficult as the first year often results in a jump in the number of kids attending, but of course over the long term the local community benefits hugely because the number of fed and educated kids rises constantly.

So, if you can, please help.

I promise not to bang on and on about this but really appreciate any size of donation at all, especially at this time of year.

‘ no matter the heights Celtic are reaching’

    ##

The current side isn’t as good as the sides of MoN, GS, or NFL.

The domestic invincibles stuff is fine, but it’s more a reflection of just how bad the Scottish game is currently than anything else.

So I’m not sure what heights you think Celtic are reaching at the moment.

But if you’re happy though, that’s the main thing.

  4. It can be pretty horrible, a huge club stuck in a minor league without competition, but it offers us respite, an opportunity to recharge, experiment and return afresh.

No respite this weekend. Away to arguably the second best team in the country, definitely the second best manager in the country. A team who have scored 4 goals in 2 games against us so far this season. Biggest test to our invincible record.

Roy Keane is one of my all-time favourite players… and his performance in the second leg of the CL semi against Juventus (when he knew he had been carded, and wouldn’t be playing in the final) is one of the best performances I have seen (he put the team on his back and carried/willed them to the final)….

but, sadly, he also seems like one of the most angry/unhappy buggers I have ever seen.

I dont know the guy at all, but I hope that, away from the pitch/away from the TV, he is perhaps more at peace…

Anyone watch Peaky Blinders last night?Thought this was quite a funny observation on Adrien Brody.

“Tell your mama we have a deal.” Adrien Brody is so hammy that the Food Standards Agency is looking for his Red Tractor stamp

Totally hamming it. He sounds like a hybrid of the Marlon Brando characters in the Godfather and On the Waterfront.

Fist two series of Peaky Blinders were very good. Downhill since then.

  8. A very tough fixture against Hibs coming up I would imagine, Neil knows Celtic, he knows our club and he knows Saturday will be his best chance so far of taking three points off of us.

Again we will need to be at our best to go to Edinburgh and come home with all three, Hibs have already made it tough for us this season and on their day are way better than the Sheep or the Zombies.

I’m not sure Brendan will go for wholesale changes but there will a couple I reckon.

    Paul67,

I’d be interested to know what CQN’s view on the current McInnes-Aberdeen-TRFC saga is.

How does it compare to the Tommy Burns-Kilmarnock-Celtic affair?

Were there any precedents set back then that should be followed now?

    Bearing in mind:

Celtic and Kilmarnock were not in direct competion for 2nd place.

Tommy Burns didn’t manage Kilmarnock to 2x losses against Celtic immediately prior to his transferring.

And while It may be said this has nothing to do with Celtic, I would point out that it is happening in the league that Celtic currently leads – and is happening between the 2 clubs closest to Celtic.

    I’m sure I’ve missed a few points as well…

  11. Yesterday, I met one of the most inspirational people I have ever had the joy to be in the same room as.

Young (22 next week), courageous, determined, lovely speaker, smiling throughout, witty and intelligent.

She was paralysed in an accident at 14, never to walk again and had to undergo lengthy rehabilitation for a while thinking that she would never get out of bed again. For most of us, getting a wheelchair would be a sign of a dark future but, for her, getting her first wheelchair was her route back to activity although, then, she did not know what that would entail and how far it would take her.

She accepts what happened to her and encourages people to ask straight questions about her condition rather than avoid or look away. She knows what she lost but has found new purposes from self care in daily living to athletic excellence.

Now ,she has 3 European and 1 World records in Para-athletic events.

The mcinnes fiasco only exists because sevco are skint. My understanding is that his contract includes a clause that if compensation is met then he can go – under those circumstances aberdeen would be bound by that contract and would have to agree to release him. Show us the money is the correct approach by milne.

The SMSM have played a blinder for sevco in pressing the mcinnes for sevco story.

    Quonno,

Some of the vile sectarian abuse directed at Tony Doherty via Twitter etc has been truly awful. I am glad to say that many many people jumped on it and criticised such treatment and abuse right away, and many of them were fans of the club from Ibrox.

I find it astonishing that such attitudes can prevail in the 21st century but am heartened by how many condemned such behaviour.

  25. Alasdairmaclean

The Mcinnes saga is a charade, nothing more, nothing less. For that merde chairman of the sheep, he is a puppet and a bigot. Of course McInnes is going to hunville, but Milne has to appear to be playing the game, which he is not.

Huns have no money but friends in all the right places.
