Superior fitness and mental fortitude will deliver for Celtic

1174

Having pummelled Newco repeatedly this season there is a notion that we’re going to do it again on Sunday. I’d be tempted to hold that result. St Mirren, an inferior team, demonstrated for 57 minutes how far blanket defending and a bit of organisation can take you. If Celtic record an impressive result at the weekend, they will have to be at the peak of their powers.

We can expect Newco will have watched replays of the opening 20 minutes of our Hogmanay tie dozens of times recently. They will do their best to capture what worked for them during that period, and attempt to replicate it on Sunday.

We started slowly that day, which is not entirely out of character, but one or two also looked spooked by the occasion. Newco started on the front foot, again, something they repeatedly do, but just as they have done throughout the season, they soon ran out of steam.

There is not a great deal they will be able to do about Moussa Dembele, short of cutting off supply to him. As a consequence, they will stick tight to Scott Sinclair, who will have work to do to even get involved in the game, never mind hurt the opposition. This is no bad thing, as while Scott is our most productive player, the team will be full of players hungry and capable of hurting the Newco defence.

This is a game which could be in the balance with 15 minutes remaining, but which Celtic could score three times in the closing period. They have the superior fitness and mental fortitude.

Our greatest danger will be from officialdom. Conceding a penalty, a red card, or both, opens the only door possible for Newco to take anything from the game. Keep cool heads as we’ll do just fine.

  1. Had alook at the madhose that is RM,

first item i read is a welcome to their new manager which includes this,

“with the exception of Barcelona and Real Madrid you have taken on the ultimate test of your ability”,

where do you even start with this

  2. In the 1986 WC Alex Ferguson was now the manager replacing the late Big Mhan, for the last sectional game against Uruguay Scotland needed to win to meet Argentina in the first knockout round, Uruguay only required only a draw.

Knowing how explosive this game could be Sir Furious left put the Scottish captain, who had just left Sampdoria for govan, not even on the bench. That’s how lowly he rated him.

  3. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Roy, when the Dons tried to intimidate us at Pittodrie earlier this season, Wullie said at half time, the Dons should have three players booked in the first ten minutes of the game.

He should know , he was the best ref in Scotland , in his day. Lol

David ‘toepoke ‘ Narey was a great defender.

The Maestro is and always will be my number 1, more so because we weren’t the best back then :-)

He scored loads of goals, debut at pittodrie, first Glasgiw Derby, but in my opinion then done everybody else’s jobs

Paul McStay number 1 in this household

Its brilliant that you are on tonight after what has taken place today with Tommy and Jim.

So many great Celtic moments and tunes will help see out this day.

  6. Dallas,

i had totally forgotten about that game up there until right now. Wasnt the first time I saw big packie flapping for a cross v Aberdeen in a cup game and them scoring from it! thankfully that night it was the crucial one though!

although I loved big Starky’s goals and that result, it wasnt my Favourite game up there.

That was the game that was played 10 days after we beat the huns at Mordor to effectivelt win the League in the Centenary Season. It was the “replay” of the game that had been postponed up there earlier in the season (another midweek game, that was called off due to fog. We reached the harbour and were told by the police to turn round and just go home! Coulcnt believe we had got all that way only for them to call it off!). The “replay” was 1-0 win, a certain Andy Walker scored, but that was just the icing on the cake that as we knew we were going to be Champs anyway and by God did we let the Sheepies know it!

Was basically a party in the Beach End fromsecond we got in to second we left…..the van on the way home was just as good.

    Great memories mate.

Think you were first to point out that Pat Rice and my Patrice were both born on Saint Patrick’s Day. If legend is true Old Kilpatrick along the road is where Ireland’s patron Saint was born.

  11. Delaneys,

    a Tim from Old Kilpatrick?,

    no many of them about,

best thing about OK is the cooncil dump

  12. The Celtic support respectfully applauded Tommy Gemmell down the Celtic Way on his final journey. We will never see his likes again. HH Big shot

  13. Gerryfaethebrig,

he was that. I should know, given that at that time I was a member of the Andy Walker No1 CSC from Motherwell!!

He came to our “Do” twice and posed for loads of photos and chatted to us for ages etc those nights.

    No soup-taker then was he.

Shame really, as I used to really like him back then. That chested goal at Mordor was one of my personal favourites for years :-)

    Complete midfielder.

The man could do everything and often had to!

Funnily enough i always thought Souness showed him the utmost respect and allthough he was prepared to do other players to win a game he never went for Paul in that way(not that i can remember) even though he would have been a huge loss for us.

I still believe Souness would have loved to have signed Paul and wonder whether he sounded him out about it.

  16. looking a bit of advice folks..driving from edinburgh to the game on sunday morning, am i right in thinking that there are major roadworks on the motorway to glasgow and how much of a delay should we allow for ? any advice would be appreciated cheers

Day I married Mrs TTT. the fact it was that day, meant hee-haw to me.

Took loads of abuse (jokingly mostly) about it, but I couldnt have cared less. Cue jokes about trying to get a band etc ;-)

Didnt go down too well with Mrs TTT’s Dad to begin with, but I won him round.

As i used to say, it got me out of the way of them and theirs that day.

Walker was a hardy wee player.

He had some battles with Greame Roberts but was always back in there looking for more.

Such a shame what he has become.

  19. Thunder Road,

he was a great player for us that first time around especially. Scored so many goals. Key man in our Centenary Double.

Still find it hard to understand how he has went down that soup-taking road.
