Superior fitness and mental fortitude will deliver for Celtic

1174

Having pummelled Newco repeatedly this season there is a notion that we’re going to do it again on Sunday. I’d be tempted to hold that result. St Mirren, an inferior team, demonstrated for 57 minutes how far blanket defending and a bit of organisation can take you. If Celtic record an impressive result at the weekend, they will have to be at the peak of their powers.

We can expect Newco will have watched replays of the opening 20 minutes of our Hogmanay tie dozens of times recently. They will do their best to capture what worked for them during that period, and attempt to replicate it on Sunday.

We started slowly that day, which is not entirely out of character, but one or two also looked spooked by the occasion. Newco started on the front foot, again, something they repeatedly do, but just as they have done throughout the season, they soon ran out of steam.

There is not a great deal they will be able to do about Moussa Dembele, short of cutting off supply to him. As a consequence, they will stick tight to Scott Sinclair, who will have work to do to even get involved in the game, never mind hurt the opposition. This is no bad thing, as while Scott is our most productive player, the team will be full of players hungry and capable of hurting the Newco defence.

This is a game which could be in the balance with 15 minutes remaining, but which Celtic could score three times in the closing period. They have the superior fitness and mental fortitude.

Our greatest danger will be from officialdom. Conceding a penalty, a red card, or both, opens the only door possible for Newco to take anything from the game. Keep cool heads as we’ll do just fine.

  1. Brogan Rogan Trevino and Hogan on

    Good Evening.

Lovely service for El Diego Bhoy this morning and as Lennybhoy has said there were many CQN’ers there.

Jim was a born romantic. He totally and utterly believed in love — love for his late wife Moira beamed out of him like a light and his love for, and the pride he took in, his two girls was written all over him.

I can’t claim to have known him as well as others like Malorbhoy but we had many a chat about life, love, Celtic and our mutual appreciation of Mr Ferry’s lyrics.

When I got into my car today and headed out for the church, I turned on the radio and, finding nothing that I wanted to listen to, I pushed the button to switch to a CD.

I had forgotten what was on the playlist but within minutes on came big Bryan singing a number which will only really be known by oul Roxy enthusiasts.

The words and the music literally washed over me. The song was just so appropriate for that moment and it serves as an appropriate message from Jim to his girls and to everyone else who attended his funeral and who had him in their thoughts today.

The song is simply called Psalm:

    Try on your love

    Like a new dress

    The fit and the cut

    Your friends to impress

    Try on your smile,

    Square on your face

    Showing affection

    Should be no disgrace

    Try out your God

    Hope He will send

    Kindness from strangers

    On whom you depend

    Try on His coat

    A mantle most fine

    Myriad colors

    His harmony-thine

    Believe in me

    Once seemed a good line

    Now belief in Jesus

    Is faith more sublime

    Head in the clouds

But I can’t see the Lord

    Short of perfection

    I’ll try to be good

    I’ll stand at His gate

    I’ll wait for His sign

Then I’ll walk in His garden

    When it’s my time

    Drink from His cup

    Hush now don’t you cry

    His quiet waters

    Will never, never run dry

    Nearing death’s vale

    He’s here by my side

    He leads me to paradise

    A mountain so high

    Don’t be afraid

    Just treasure His word

    Singing His praises

I know that I’ll be heard

He’s gonna take you by the hand

He’s gonna make you feel so good

    Open up your eyes

And then you’ll see all that you should

    Forget all your troubles

    You will feel no pain

    He’s all that you need

    He’s your everything

When I’m feeling all at sea

    Deliverance is that distant shore

    I will not be worried

Someday His house will be my home

    For ever more

The Token Tim, that midweek win at Pittodrie in the Centenary season was special.

Our goal was similar to the winning goal at Ibrox a few weeks earlier. A corner for Anton to run onto and Andy diverting the header into the onion ag.

Our support would not leave the stadium until we got a bow from the team but the Grampian Polis would not let the team back out and eventually put the lights out in the Beach End to encourage us to leave. Lighters were then lit to get some light anf then the polis cae in en masse to shepherd us out.

There was a brillant photo in the Celtic View after we beat the now defunct club 2 nil on New Years Day 1988. Roberts was in goal after Woods went off after colliding with Lex Baillie earlier in the game. Frankiebhoy headered his and our second. Roberts looked really peed off and the photo showed Andy Walker standing over him, arms aloft with a get it right up ye look on his coupon.

I would rather have no money than play to the Sky tune …… Not one person will ever take away wee Walkers goals, his chest goal at the Broomloan road was no too bad…. But am afraid us eijits can’t pick and choose when we follow Celtic

I have times reserved for the 26th May at Belas Club de Campo which is app. 20km from the centre of Lisbon and I’m told it costs around 20 euros for a taxi for that kind of distance. The times will be held for me until next week, and it looks like a top class venue. Tee times are 13.00, 13.10, 13.20 & 13.30. At the moment we will only require three of these but I will hold them in case of any last minute entries up until next Tuesday.

    https://www.belasclubedecampo.pt/golf/?lang=en

I aim to confirm and pay the costs on Tuesday next week so if there are any further late entries contact me at acgr@outlook.com I have one further available tee slot for a four ball.

Cost for green fee, shared buggies and club hire are circa 80 euro’s per person. I’ll confirm this on finalising the booking next week.

If anyone has any special club requirements e.g. left handed, let me know asap so I can request these.

There will be no fixed groups, teams or 4 (or 3) depending on final numbers will be drawn out of the hat using the preferred SFA “hot ball” method.

“In the 1986 WC Alex Ferguson was now the manager replacing the late Big Mhan, for the last sectional game against Uruguay Scotland needed to win to meet Argentina in the first knockout round, Uruguay only required only a draw.

Knowing how explosive this game could be Sir Furious left put the Scottish captain, who had just left Sampdoria for govan, not even on the bench. That’s how lowly he rated him.”

    *****

And how’d that work out for him?

  10. Dallas,

    thanks for that!

I had forgotten about the “We want the Celtic” for about 20 mins aftre the final whistle, but Grampian’s finest, were not playing ball at all. They couldnt wait to get shot of us, but we werent playing ball either. Could have got messy, but we were just in such a happy place that night, in the end it didnt matter at all.

Was a crackin night. Only complaint was brusing both shins against those concrete seats/”steps” when AW scored :-)

The beach/beech end was brilliant, back in the late 80s early 90s the songbook was pretty ok, not one or two verses, the whole shebang…… Not that in this day and age that makes it ok but it was magic in my wee tiny brain :-)

one great Mcstay memory I have is his performance against sporting lisbon in uefa cup 90s. We won 1- 0 ( Creaney ) but sporting played us off the park .

Paul was immense, his team mates looked totally out of their depth.

He was calmness personified . He had the hose out and was spraying the ball all over the park.

Would be interesting to see his passing stats for the game.

Everything we did that night went through Paul

    Token Tim, a memorable night.

Our bus got into Aberdeen about half five , we went to Daisy’s bar and enjoyed the hospitality, left there and staggered across the big sand dune (which was used a public convenience by some) , into the game , win and what a specal night it was.

1987/88 season was so magical in so many ways.

The following nine seasons were not as memorable.

Good night all and sleep well.

BRTH, very appropriate after my last message to you, but I’d take my chances in Brian’s shoes rather than them snazzy crippling boots you’re wearing. Yer feet must be an odd shape and you’ll never win at the sprint swimming.

Yep. My wee bro’s best mate was almost killed in Aberdeen, on Union St after an away game. The guy who kicked him senseless and stamped on his head to the point where he was practically brain dead on arrival A&E got five years for GBH.

Having met my Bro’s pal a few times I think it toned him down a bit. I have no love for the ABZ support even tough I know a helluva lot of them through working in their city.
