Superior fitness and mental fortitude will deliver for Celtic

1174

Having pummelled Newco repeatedly this season there is a notion that we’re going to do it again on Sunday. I’d be tempted to hold that result. St Mirren, an inferior team, demonstrated for 57 minutes how far blanket defending and a bit of organisation can take you. If Celtic record an impressive result at the weekend, they will have to be at the peak of their powers.

We can expect Newco will have watched replays of the opening 20 minutes of our Hogmanay tie dozens of times recently. They will do their best to capture what worked for them during that period, and attempt to replicate it on Sunday.

We started slowly that day, which is not entirely out of character, but one or two also looked spooked by the occasion. Newco started on the front foot, again, something they repeatedly do, but just as they have done throughout the season, they soon ran out of steam.

There is not a great deal they will be able to do about Moussa Dembele, short of cutting off supply to him. As a consequence, they will stick tight to Scott Sinclair, who will have work to do to even get involved in the game, never mind hurt the opposition. This is no bad thing, as while Scott is our most productive player, the team will be full of players hungry and capable of hurting the Newco defence.

This is a game which could be in the balance with 15 minutes remaining, but which Celtic could score three times in the closing period. They have the superior fitness and mental fortitude.

Our greatest danger will be from officialdom. Conceding a penalty, a red card, or both, opens the only door possible for Newco to take anything from the game. Keep cool heads as we’ll do just fine.

Madden might make a bad decision against us on Sunday. Hopefully not.

But if he was a ref who would do much to help out his fellow bluenoses, surely he woulda helped them out a bit more in their play off game v motherwell the other year?

And that they have informed the SFA that his report will be with them-and UEFA-immediately they return from their weekend in the local ludj.

*a waste of time sending it tae UEFA, they’re not exactly Celtic friendly especially since the double glaze salesman landed on his feet there.

It is not the opposing 11 that is causing nervousness, rather the 12th man. Many of us feel he has been hand picked, and regardless of how many times people wheel out the clichés about taking the referee out of the game, there are many ways in which a MIB can influence the game.

I firmly believe we will win but by a 1 goal margin (a result that will flatter the opposition)

  4. Today is the feast day of St Kessog patron saint of Loch Lomond and pre-reformation patron saint of Scotland, quite fitting that his feast day is exactly one week before West Dunbartonshire’s other favourite saint.

It is also quite appropriate that bonnie banks lhad Jim Devine is laid to rest today as he would have growing up attended St Kessog’s chapel in Balloch.

  5. Just read the eulogy to Tommy Gemmel by Alex Gordon.

    Excellent

    Recommend everyone reads it.

  6. Afternoon sitting here at Glasgow Airport waiting to board my Malaga flight, reflecting on Jim’s funeral. If there is such a thing as a “good ” funeral then this was it, beautiful service, respectful, numerous and genuine. His family and friends did him proud it was indeed an honour to have been there. Hail Hail Hebcelt

  7. Davidopoulos – the last game against them that Madden refereed, everyone was saying the same thing. He actually had a decent game. I will be surprised if he is the deciding factor in Sunday’s game. They are not a team of hard men, nor, with a couple of exceptions, are they particularly dirty. They will be chasing shadows for most of the game – put your money on another hat trick for Dembele :)

    Daviopoulos,

Many thanks and apologies for the delay. I had to go out and search. For dancing girls in the centre of Thrissur. I don’t use Twitter and so, if you could oblige, I would be grateful.

Madden is not the worst by a long shot, that’s why I was surprised and disappointed with johnjames’ vitriolic article the other day. As an ambitious pro (I suppose) he will be very concious of the fact ‘the whole world is watching’ and from many different angles, so, surely he won’t wish to embarrass himself on that stage, in that spotlight. I do hope he is not the post-match story…

I hate it when I have to rely on CQN for the games.

It’s difficult to keep track of how many Xorners we have had ;)

If you have an iPhone/ipad/Android device, there is a plan B.

Find a bar/hotel lobby with good WiFi and download an app called Mobdro. Watch through that on your device.

I have times reserved for the 26th May at Belas Club de Campo which is app. 20km from the centre of Lisbon and I’m told it costs around 20 euros for a taxi for that kind of distance. The times will be held for me until next week, and it looks like a top class venue. Tee times are 13.00, 13.10, 13.20 & 13.30. At the moment we will only require three of these but I will hold them in case of any last minute entries up until next Tuesday.

I aim to confirm and pay the costs on Tuesday next week so if there are any further late entries contact me at acgr@outlook.com I have one further available tee slot for a four ball.

Cost for green fee, shared buggies and club hire are circa 80 euro’s per person. I’ll confirm this on finalising the booking next week.

If anyone has any special club requirements e.g. left handed, let me know asap so I can request these.

There will be no fixed groups, teams or 4 (or 3) depending on final numbers will be drawn out of the hat using the preferred SFA “hot ball” method.

  13. Bobby Madden, the Referee for Sunday’s game , Celtic V Sevco,a lot coming on here , saying ex Sevco S T Holder, were is the proof,I have read on here that some were saying that he is a Sevco Fan,but that he worship in a R C Church in East Kilbride,as far as I’m concerned , anytime I have seen him refereeing,he was okay, but other Celtic supporters, seem to think he is a Bigot, somebody or some one explain this to me,

I was up at The Park today, i have been up for all our greats who have passed, it is a fitting way to say goodbye to your heroes.Tommy’s daughter looked very proud , as she looked at the thousands in attendance, she thanked us as she got out of her car and when she went back in for her dad’s final journey. She also thanked everyone from her car , as it went down The Celtic Way.Big Tam RIP.

  15. !!Bada Bing!! on

The current Sevco are so poor, in most games they don’t give the Fans With Whistles, a lot of material to work with.

P.S. The winning sclaffbaw team will receive a night out with BRTH, the second place team two nights out and so on………:_)

Timbhoy 3. I met Madden at a boys club awards night. The dad who brought him knew him well. I dont know where from but he was the dad with the Rangers crest tattooed on one forearm and King Billy on the other. Maybe they were in the same club or society?

  18. Sad day for the Celtic Family in general, and specifically for CQN.

Syaing goodbye to friends, knowing you’ll never see them again is always very difficult.

God bless you Tommy and Jim. I never met either of you, but got to know you both in different ways and for different reasons. Tommy, as a hero and role model, someone to look up to and admire for the best part of 50 years for me, and also, latterly, through CQN thanks to Winning Captains and others ( and huge respect to you WC for what you did for Tommy, not just because of who he was, but more because of ‘how’ he was )

Jim, as a man whose words here were always well-judged, respectful, honorable, and for me, most importantly, a man who loved family and friends unequivocally. Please god allow me to be as good a man as Jim proved to be.

This is some place here. So many inspiring people in one place.

The world is a poorere place with the passing of two ordinary, yet extraordinary men.

  19. Managed to nip out of work to attend EDB’s funeral.

The ghirls did their mum and dad proud…again. Deepest sympathy to them both. Terrible that they have been deprived of both much loved, and loving, parents at their ages.

The priest delivered a touching eulogy about Jim which seemed unrehearsed and heart-felt.

I have to say the whole service was a fitting send of for Jim however, Jim’s brother Gordon gave everyone a witty and charming conclusion to the mass and received a well deserved round of applause from the entire congregation and the priests(there were at least four) concelebrating the mass.

    A privilege to be there.

  20. A very sad day for the Celtic family.

Rest in Peace EDB and Tommy.

I’m hoping Sunday will be a day of great joy.

    It’s the Celtic Story.

  21. As Hebcelt and Vale Bhoy have already posted it was a beautiful Mass, Kerri and Meghan did indeed do their Dad proud. The Mass was concelebrated by six Priests and the eulogy was great, the Priest gave it in a manner that he knew Jim and indeed he did. He told us present that Jim will be in the same queue as one of his idols today. Two Legends standing shoulder to shoulder.

I am glad I was able to along to pay my respects to a a fellow CQNer and a friend.

To date we collected £220; the final amount will be given to Marie Curie in time.

Thanks to Sannabhoy for the beautiful floral tribute it simply was “CQN”. There was also a wreath from Celtic Football Club.

Caught up with Hebcelt, Malorbhoy, MickTT, An Tearmann, BRTH and P67. Vale Bhoy never met you my friend, had I known you were there I would have said hello.

May God Bless Jim and one of his Legends Souls.

    Keep the Faith!

    Hail Hail!

Timbhoy- a well known fact here in EK, Madden and his brothers were ST holders at Poundland, and went on a supporters bus from a hun pub.

  23. I have a fairly basic but new laptop that we bought a year or so ago for Tommy that needs a new home.

If anyone is looking for a new PC laptop please let me know and I will post it to you. There will be no cost involved. Might suit one of the older guys? Dunno. For this UK addresses only.
