Superior fitness and mental fortitude will deliver for Celtic

1174

Having pummelled Newco repeatedly this season there is a notion that we’re going to do it again on Sunday. I’d be tempted to hold that result. St Mirren, an inferior team, demonstrated for 57 minutes how far blanket defending and a bit of organisation can take you. If Celtic record an impressive result at the weekend, they will have to be at the peak of their powers.

We can expect Newco will have watched replays of the opening 20 minutes of our Hogmanay tie dozens of times recently. They will do their best to capture what worked for them during that period, and attempt to replicate it on Sunday.

We started slowly that day, which is not entirely out of character, but one or two also looked spooked by the occasion. Newco started on the front foot, again, something they repeatedly do, but just as they have done throughout the season, they soon ran out of steam.

There is not a great deal they will be able to do about Moussa Dembele, short of cutting off supply to him. As a consequence, they will stick tight to Scott Sinclair, who will have work to do to even get involved in the game, never mind hurt the opposition. This is no bad thing, as while Scott is our most productive player, the team will be full of players hungry and capable of hurting the Newco defence.

This is a game which could be in the balance with 15 minutes remaining, but which Celtic could score three times in the closing period. They have the superior fitness and mental fortitude.

Our greatest danger will be from officialdom. Conceding a penalty, a red card, or both, opens the only door possible for Newco to take anything from the game. Keep cool heads as we’ll do just fine.

An uplifting amount of support from the Hoops faithful for one of the fallen Lions. A big man with an even bigger character, a legend who will never be forgotten.

I hope EDB’s two ghirls got a lift from the many people paying respects to their dad today. I couldn’t make it to the funeral, but I met HT and Cosy Corner Bhoy (after his lengthy train journey) yesterday evening and Jim’s old mate, Malorbhoy introduced us to the ghirls and Jim’s brother. Gordon said that he had a few stories about Jim all ready for the funeral and it sounds like they struck a chord with the mourners. Jim was great company and definately another Celtic character!

RIP Big Tam and EDB. God bless both your families.

If we play to our potential and they play above their potential we should still be good enough to overcome them, no excuses ☘️☘️

  3. I’m starting early today with my hunskelping memories.

This week we’ve had Bobby’s hat trick at Ibrox in the Glasgow Cup (or Xup) in the live game threads.

Stevie’s hat trick in the CP ice rink, although the sports team missed one of his goals. It did show what a shot Bobby Murdoch possessed.

We had Lubo’s double in the 5-1 game when he seemed the only com, almost inscrutable, person in the stadium.

Last night Henrik’s divine unforgettable chip was the highlight of the 6-2 game, one I missed live due to being in quarantine. The joy of the fans shown after the third goal and the celebrations of the ball bhoys at Henrik’s chip goal will always remain a shining example of Celtic fans casting off years of darkness.

So today’s short highlight is Lubo’s double at the home of the badger.

  5. Just got on a DART (electric train) to go to a do. The intercom greeted the passengers with “mind the gap”. The inside decor is green and white.

    Could it be an omen?

  6. Apologies for being late on parade, but I would like to pay my respects to Tommy and Jim.

    May the rest in peace.

My thoughts are with their families and friends.

  9. Just on after quite a hectic few days.

My condolences to Tommy Gemmell and EDB’s families on this sad day.

Can anyone point me to the video of Tommy’s funeral that my mate told me he watched in the Canaries on his phone?

Not sure I see them starting like they did in the last game, Paul. That was a home game for them. I can see it being more like the LC S-F, although hopefully we will score a bit earlier.

I’ll go for a comfortable 2-3 goal win.

Agreed re the cool heads. Any opportunity and…..

  11. Good evening, friends.

Looking forward to seeing Lenny’s Hibs up at Tannadice tonight. More good coverage of Scottish football from BT. My 2 charity donations tonight are –

The wonderful Efe Ambrose to score at anytime – 14/1

And a treble of (at least) 3 goals, 5 cards and 11 corners at about 17/2

Oh and still waiting on 13 Goals For Shay predictions, grrrrrrrr

About to watching Hibs v DU game,is John McGinn a Celtic

    player in waiting?

  16. We prepare professionally using technology and psychology.

Our fitness levels are superior to any team.

We have the advantage over Sevco in every position.

Name one of their players who’d get on our bench, never mind the park.

Come to think of it name their team. I can’t.

From Gordon out we have outstanding athletes.

    Brown is an inspirational captain.

TIERNEY is THE outstanding prospect of Scottish footballers.

Armstrong has been moulded into a fine midfielder capable of lung bursting runs and memorable goals.

Sinclair is fast, elusive with an eye for goal.

Moussa is the best striker I’ve seen at CP since Henrik. The Sevco defence will need more than Horlicks to sleep on Saturday night.

We are rampant at the moment with a barrow load of goals this year.

And I see no way we will be stopped on Sunday.

I will be disappointed if we don’t win by more than 3.

Bobby Mad Hun will feel like King Canute by 1pm Sunday.

My ignorance on players (the lions as well) is terrible, I rely on others as a youngster my dad, now probably here :-) saw your father tonight commenting on Mr Gemmell absolutely brilliant, I love the fact your posts sometimes are about your dad going to pittodrie or wherever …. & mini involved as well……

Great stuff …. Am sure the Gemmell family & the Devine family will have loads of amazing memories after this sadness passes …. In my opinion CQN has been a marvellous read in very difficult circumstances for a couple of families who are from different walks of life but Celtic is the common denominator

  18. I see there really is a team named ` Angers`. They are playing Marseille tonight .

Right, time to watch what promises to be an excellent ( ie closely fought ) game of rugby. Wales V Ireland. I am fairly neutral on this one but fancy Ireland to take the spoils.
