Teams with inferior resources have figured out how to play us

426

Despite benefiting from the worst goal I’ve seen conceded against Celtic, a well-drilled by no more than competent Kilmarnock team came from behind to take all three points and leave Celtic at a multi-year low yesterday.

Excuses are available: the pitch, the fact that we made six changes to the starting 11, but the reality is yesterday’s performance was little different from what we have seen so often this season.  I could make a case that we were worse still in the home win over Hamilton.  The latter performance took place on a pristine Celtic Park with Dembele and Griffiths both starting.

Two seasons on, teams with vastly inferior resources have figured out how to play us and we have not figured out how to compensate for this reality.

I trust the manager.  He has delivered and deserves our faith.  He will get it right and deliver 8-in-a-row, but I fear for our treble on Wednesday night.  Having failed to win any of our three away games against Premiership opposition, the pattern is too complete to ignore.

Apologies for the radio silence on CQN yesterday.  The server was knocked off by the volume of visitors and the recovery process caused further issues.  Been ages since this has happened, but I suppose it’s been a while since we’ve had results like this.

  1. BIG PACKY 1 on 24TH SEPTEMBER 2018 7:15 PM

just like to add my condolences to jim brogans family, one hard tackling but fair defender, had many a pint in jim brogans bar in Coatbridge may he rip.hh.

had a few beers in there as well in the ’70’s across from the casanova.

  2. MNCELT

I have never said not to give him a chance.

But tactical rethink and adjustment are needed to stop the decline.

  3. time to circle the wagons?!

    1. that was 6 years ago when we could have, and should have, done something to fix the problem. Instead, our Board became part of the problem.

circling the wagons now is like putting on a condom after your wife has twins and your girlfriend is pregnant …

(no… that is not a cheap shot at Leigh Griffiths!)

    plus

    2. circling the wagon doesnt work if the people inside the circle (like our Board) are also firing arrows at the fans.

  4. General opinion on here is that we should change our passing play to more attacking style. Maybe Brendan thinks his way is best in the long run.

  5. Cant say I was happy with Sunday, its one game, and having had the mis-fortune to live through the Huns 9 in a row I believe I will survive one Sunday set back.

That said despite our poor performance,Thomson did not award a stick on penalty, plus no matter what anyone says we cannot play on that surface.

I heard from a former Board member that the French connection are the cause of much dressing room unrest,so I can sympathise with BR,does he kick them up the back end and drop them, and risk all the experts criticise him for doing so.

Usually when I see a Croat or Serb playing at the high level they look as if they have just finished Army service,in other words, more than capable.

How lucky are we to pop into the transfer and loan market and pick up a couple of jessies who are afraid of plastic,Achilles strain at warm up? I wonder.

PS We need to get in amongst Big Lie down Tommy on Wed. how many did he rest this time.

RIP Jim Brogan a proper Celtic player.

  8. Right Celtic now

Yesterday – I am a fan of giving Ryan Christie and youth a chance.

I am Not a fan of either James Forrest or Calum McGregor, and think both have been poor this season ( not the only 2) – I admit I do not look at these 2 with positivity, yes done ok last season, but no better than we should accept

Did Christie or Johnston do any worse yesterday than the 2 they replaced ?

I also believe we should be getting much much more for our football squad spend (£56m last season, there was a £3m right off added, and this £56m spend includes champions league and Treble winning bonuses)

We are paying far too much for far too many mediocre players

No idea how we do it, but a major clearout needed, DDV, Gamboa, Compper, Kouassi, Allan, Ciftci, Hayes, there is more

We need to support Brendan on creating a lower headcount squad, but much better quality

  9. Norrie,

If Celtic don’t win the League Cup, then Sevco will win it.

We need to win it to keep the treble alive, cos if Sevco win it, they will be going for a treble.

Forget Europe this season, 8 in a row is a MUST.

  10. I just noticed the blog was back about half an hour ago and, having read back, I see we are still in the mood for hitting out in all directions, whilst taking a bit of extra time to focus on whoever our usual scapegoat is.

Several people have chosen Paul 67, the host of this blog, for particular target practice and have declared him guilty of arrogance and presumption. I have looked at the comment for which he is being hung out to dry, and I don’t get it.

Where, exactly is the arrogance in using the phrase “our treble”? Everyone that has jumped in is taking it that Paul is being presumptious about achieving a treble in 2018/19. But can no-one, apart from possibly MN Celt, not see the alternative construction on his statement before they waded in? Is it really not more likely that he is referring to 2017/18’s treble i.e. the one we already have? Otherwise, why would he make reference to this Wednesday’s game?

We do not lose the 2018/19 treble this Wednesday because we do not have any one of the three parts of this season’s yet-to-be-won treble in our possession to lose. However, if we lose on Wednesday, we will have lost out on our possession of one leg of last year’s trophies and we will only have a double to attempt to hold on to.

I saw another poster make up the accusation that Paul had predicted we would win the league for ever and ever, in order to construct a straw man to be shot down. The minor drawback that no such thing was ever said or claimed did not hold him back.

If you are not sure what is being claimed by a poster then ask a question and have it clarified before you reach your own conclusions and hang him for what you have inferred rather than what he/she implied or stated.

Is this blog routinely guilty of arrogance? Are there articles saying 10 in a row is a certainty? I have seen no such thing but I have heard many Celtic fans sing along with the 10iar chant at CP. I have to wonder how many of those who accused the article writer of arrogance have remained silent during this ditty or have remonstrated with fellow supporters who have joined in? I know I haven’t- so why would I round on Paul 67 for the same sin, even if I believed he was guilty of it? Could it be other scores being settled by proxy?

There is a lot wrong with the club just now. Mob mentality promotes simplistic solutions; it promotes heat rather than light. Let’s give the parties involved more than 6 league games, less than 16% of our league season, in order to establish the improvements needed.

After all, we are still in a challenge for the league. We are still in the League Cup and Scottish Cup and we are still in Europe, at least till December. All we have lost so far is the CL qualification challenge.

We need to unify now or we will bicker our way to prove our point in failing.

Is it better to win an argument or win the league?

  11. SFTB,

We are all soooooooooo easily offended these days.

I might be wrong (i usually am) , but was Stevie Clarcke not sounded out for the job before and said something along the lines , he would’nt put his family through all the nonesense that comes with it .

    …………..

I couldn’t say for certain. I remember Paul Lambert saying it several years ago when his stock was higher and he was in demand. Last season Stevie Clarke said that he’d only manage Kilmarnock in Scotland but he was being touted by the media as the next new Hun manager. He’s a Tim – I don’t know how big a Tim he is – but maybe when he made that statement he thought Brendan was untouchable at Celtic and the chance to manage Celtic would never arise.

I hope he doesn’t have to be asked because I hope Brendan and the players sort it out and Brendan stays.

    ==============================================================

I think Brendan feels that he can get away with experimentation .

And with the playing staff we have , we should most certainly be able to .

Squad rotation , I think , is his agenda .

    Sunday it didn`t work .

In future , I am confident , it will .

The huns performance was interesting .

The gloss of Gerrardo will fade.

He doesn`t have quality in his playing staff .

  16. 25th October 2017 Aberdeen 0 Celtic 3, less then 12 months ago, probably the best Celtic performance in over a decade. Dembele and Armstrong played that night so did 9 others.

    I live in hope.

  17. Will always remember as a kid being driven over the Haylie Brae in Largs and loving the bedlam on the radio when Jim Brogan scored a last minute winner against Rangers at New Year. He sure picked his goals.

    RIP

  18. Brendan Rodgers system is boring, and I defy any supporter that says different,it’s starts from the kick off, then sideways then back,it’s getting to predicable, and that’s one of the problems, and through the same system can’t seem to finish teams off,so for all our sakes I hope he can change it very quick,or it’s ta ta,

  19. Ok, we have been pretty dire since the start of the season (and more than a few games last year, albeit while still winning). Crisis my arse (and how the every other supporter, ‘reporter’ and every other bugger in Scottish football would like to think so and exaggerate our situation). Those of us old enough have lived through real crisis times from a football perspective. I do think we now need to go with our strongest 11 in every game. Forget the rotation/resting players, it’s not as if we haven’t won leagues with a limited squad before. The support i.e. us, haven’t really been needed for years as we’ve cantered to trophy after trophy. Well, we are now. This is what being a supporter is about. Be a Celtic supporter and put all these clowns back in their box.

  20. EXCATHEDRA44

If there were players creating an awkward or troubled dressing room their arse should as a minimum be kicked , if he did’nt he’d soon lose respect from the others and possibly the dressing room altogether.

  21. No I don’t think anyone has actually said that they want Lennon, Strachan or Clarke to replace Brendan. If for, whatever reason, Brendan leaves the Club then people have said that the names above should be considered.

Some of the uber fans also should realise that this is a blog which has been set up for Celtic fans to discuss matters relating to Celtic. That is exactly what is happening. It is the club’s fault that fans think we could be entering a crisis because they have failed to keep us informed. For those criticising the discussion of other possible future managers, then all I can say is that I hope the Board are more proactive and have a shortlist prepared for the eventuality of Brendan leaving whether of his own accord or not.

  22. CELTIC footballer Jonny Hayes stepped in to stop a young Rangers fan from being bullied.

The Hoops ace spotted Callum Forrest being picked on by four boys at a Co-Op near the team’s Lennoxtown training grounds.

The 31-year-old offered the youngster, who recently started secondary school, a life home and when Callum declined, the winger followed him home to make sure he was safe.

However, the Parkhead player didn’t stop there.

When Callum asked mum Jordan to send Jonny a thank you note, the Celtic star responded with a signed shirt and inspirational message for the youngster.

In a note to Callum, Jonny wrote: “Callum, don’t let the boys from school get you down.

    “Bullies aren’t worth your time.

“If you ever need anything I’m only five minutes up the road, Jonny.”

Taking to Facebook to share Callum’s experience, proud mum Jordan wrote: “He is chuffed to bits because he had only asked for his autograph and I told him not to get his hopes up on that because he’s a busy man.

“But for him to send his own top signed is absolutely amazing and my son’s a Rangers fan but when he opened that parcel and he read the note he was nearly crying.

“He was so happy, he’s not stopped telling people and showing them what Jonny sent him.

“Not only that he messaged Jonny on Instagram to say thank you and and he said to me ‘I know he won’t get back to me’ and about five minutes later he came running in screaming because he did get back to him and my son replied and asked for a game of football with him.

“So thank you Jonny, you have made my son one very happy boy, he said this is the best week off his life. I haven’t seen him smile like that in a long time and thank you for what you done for him.”

had a couple of beers in jim brogans pub with my brother in law and a good talk about celtic.

his pub was in maryhill .

  24. As you are all probably aware it is exactly one year and a day since since Sky commenced their investigation into Celtic Bias, by I appointing Jim White to head an independent undercover op to root out any subversive elements.

At first I’ve been told that he subjected good looking intelligent suspects at Sky (3at last count) to a horrendous torture of listening to his one of his broadcasts incessantly for four minutes. But before it had the expected effect, Jim himself could take no more and careered out of the fourth floor window , landing on his head and causing considerable damage to a passing tank on its way to Ibrox for the post match Armed Forces celebration.

Anyway, once he had recovered his senses…well actually just the one…. and removed a substantial portion of the gun barrel from his mouth, he recuperated by listening to the BBC radio introduction of the game at Ibrox versus Celtic. He liked listening to the pre-match intros by the likes of Kenny MacIntyre who was his hero and also made him feel intelligent. The earlier encounter with the gun barrel had also brought back happy memories of tasty evenings with his hero.

Eventually the match commenced and after about 36 minutes, he suddenly bounded from his chair as he found the wee sneaky taigs hiding in plain sight . There was the evidence writ large…on the screen…for all the world to see….Only a smartypants clever wee hoops fan would have put up the corners and foul stats with those numbers….Jim quickly took hardcopy prints of the picture stills and rushed to tell the bosses of the success of his mission, but unfortunately the one sense he had recovered from his previous misadventure wasn’t the sense of direction, and again he flew out the fourth floor window this time taking out a nuclear sub and landing on his erse on the point of a primed Trident Missile.

Memories of more magic moments with Kenny flooded back.

As he lay there staring blearily at the darkening sky and the descending pulsating desperate lips of the vision of Kenny Mac coming to save him, a wee Tim on watchout duty emerged from the shadows, sprinted across the paving and with a quick ‘hail hail’ grabbed the photo-printout from his hands.

I have been holding on to this evidence for just over a year but as the suspects have retired to the safe haven of Sharkey’s Intellectual corner and Jim hasn’t worked out how to work the rewind button on the recording, I can only now reveal the incriminating evidence.

You don’t have to be Sherlock to see how Jim’s suspicion’s were aroused (and not by Kenny Mac I hasten to add)

… I do think we now need to go with our strongest 11 in every game. Forget the rotation/resting players, it’s not as if we haven’t won leagues with a limited squad before…

    =====================

Agree with that in principle, but not sure what that is at the moment – and even turning up to games when we have what I thought was the best available 11, we have been struggling (e.g., against St Mirren).

Might be the best idea though – put what he thinks is his best 11 on the park at the start of every game (injuries permitting) and hope they play back in to form.

I’d go with the following personnel and formation:

    Bain

    Benkovic Boyata

    Lustig KT

    Broonie

    Forrest Morgan

    Mulumbu

    Rogic

    Griff

The shape we have adopted this year in particular (described on the radio as a box in the midfield) seems too easy for a well-drilled defence to combat – it creates less angles for forward passes (see the frustrated arm waving from Boyata and KT at the lack of options in front of them as evidence).

CelticByNumbers did a great explanation of how ‘valuable’ a pass was based on the number of opposition players to goes past. This was the one of the biggest changes in the first BR season – the number of passes forward past opposition attackers and midfielders from our defence, thereby exposing teams’ back lines to our midfielders and forwards quickly. The team shape we have smothers the mid-field space that allows those passes to happen.
