Teams with inferior resources have figured out how to play us

426

Despite benefiting from the worst goal I’ve seen conceded against Celtic, a well-drilled by no more than competent Kilmarnock team came from behind to take all three points and leave Celtic at a multi-year low yesterday.

Excuses are available: the pitch, the fact that we made six changes to the starting 11, but the reality is yesterday’s performance was little different from what we have seen so often this season.  I could make a case that we were worse still in the home win over Hamilton.  The latter performance took place on a pristine Celtic Park with Dembele and Griffiths both starting.

Two seasons on, teams with vastly inferior resources have figured out how to play us and we have not figured out how to compensate for this reality.

I trust the manager.  He has delivered and deserves our faith.  He will get it right and deliver 8-in-a-row, but I fear for our treble on Wednesday night.  Having failed to win any of our three away games against Premiership opposition, the pattern is too complete to ignore.

Apologies for the radio silence on CQN yesterday.  The server was knocked off by the volume of visitors and the recovery process caused further issues.  Been ages since this has happened, but I suppose it’s been a while since we’ve had results like this.

  1. Happy Clappers and Mineshafters?

    Celtic supporters and Celtic agitators all Celtic fans, with very different opinions and no wonder after 2012 in my opinion.

    There were Celtic malcontents before during and after 2012 , I signed up in 2012, but keep my Rainjurz angst under control in order to try and help sustain the good guys, Celtic after all cannot solve a very British problem?

    I too, came home from Seville to the news that we were ‘signing nobody’ and that we ‘were up to our necks in debt’ after reaching the UEFA final. Brian Quinn and his slow lane policy even gave the Celtic support, Celtic Quick News.

    Celtic changed along with the season ticket generation, but the generic mistrust of ‘the custodians’ didn’t go away, the Celtic support came and went, and in the 60’s 70’s and 80’s regularly the attendance was the old standard….. EST ATT 18,000. in the evening times.

    Mineshafting only extends to the internet and the public critique of Celtic solves nothing , and certainly doesn’t influence others opinion to join the mineshafters

    I reckon the Celtic board get more right than wrong and its evidenced in the 56,000 that saw us beat the Norwegian champions for the umpteenth time the other night.

    I doff my cap to the Celtic fans jumping on the supporters bus straight from work

    heading for Perth.

    The lifeblood and sustainance of the club .

  2. Even our second string should be beating St Mirren and Kilmarnock.

    It’s the system we are playing IMO that is stifling our natural footballers

    We need to change the system if BR does not then it’s more of the same.

    Teams have Sussex us out. Change it

    D. :)

  3. The manager isn’t blameless for the current malaise, but what we are currently experiencing is something we experience every few years under various managers, O’Neill, Strachan, Lennon and Deila. There is however one constant.

    Celtic always weaken from a position of strength.

  4. Even our second string should be beating St Mirren and Kilmarnock.

    Interesting stat.

    It’s obvious the slide has been going on for a while. Standards dropped last season and got worse as the season went on. The two games lost this season at Rugby Park and Tynecastle were also defeats at the end of last year.

    Its more difficult to say why. It’s concerning that the team seems like its run its cycle so quickly and we are handing out new deals.

    Rodgers has to get this team going for one last season before we have to turnover this squad. Something like 10 in and 10 out is required.

  6. THE HANDS CANT HIT.,

    Its £ 30 million,wether you choose to believe that or not.Look at the signings since Brendan came in.I dont give a toss about “Net spend”.The Dembele money came too late to do anything about that.

    If I sell 30 million quids worth of players,give it to you,and a lot of what you buy is dross,with that 30 million,who is at fault..Not one decent CH was scouted last season,or this.Whos fault is that?

    But listen,you just keep up your accounting in your own wee world.Examples,

    Commper,Hendry,Kouassi,Hayes,Gamboa,transfer fees and wages,around £ 10 million for players that hardly feature.Whos fault is that?

  7. My friends in Celtic,

    The worst start to a league campaign in 20 years cannot be classed as just a blip.

    Our players are paid more ( much more ) than any other club in Scotland, they are currently not showing why.

    The management team rightly takes the plaudits for exceptional achievements. Who takes responsibility for underachieving?

    HH.

  8. Gary 67,

    You keep mentioning previous managers to try and have a go at the previous Boards.

    Did the Board at the time of MON,not put the club in debt to the tune of around £ 36 million backing him?

    WGS,took the job,knowing fine well,that his remit from the Board was to get the wage bill down,which was very neccessary.He also did a great job,whilst fullfilling this task.

    This fallacy about going from strength to weakness,is exactly that.We put in a fantastic bid to get Paddy permanent,knocked back by City.We signed Edouarde,to partner Dembele.That to me is trying to be stronger.

  9. Everyone knows Glasgow should be the Capital of Scotland. Edinburgh was only chosen because it has a nice castle.

    It is a load of nonsense to say that people commit crimes because of their deprived backgrounds. I know loads of people who had a poor start and they don`t commit crimes.

    I make my own mind up about any issue. Genetics, background, differing levels of perspicacity and prejudice play no part in me coming to my own conclusions.

  10. Possibly, just possibly, if the club hadn’t or isn’t paying the players who are not going to make it that Brendan inherited too much wages, he might have scouted another CB or who ever was required, he has been harping on since he arrived that he wanted a smaller squad, the reason could be there has to be outs before ins, it’s not the fault of the manager the players can’t be shifted, I wonder who’s fault that is ?

    It’s not the managers.

  11. FATHER JACK

    Yes, you’re right. He can only be blamed for the ones he brought in that can’t be shifted por cierto

  13. GREENPINTA,

    “Who takes the blame for the team underachieving”

    On here anyway,its seems its the Boards fault.

    I am anything but a Board lover,never really liked any of them,since the Kelly,Whites.Dont get me started on the present Boards handling of the Sevco/Res 12 fiasco.Shameless.I just refuse to blame them for every ill that befalls us.Thats just ridiculous.People just get so caught up in their hatred for the Board,they take their eyes of the real problem.At the moment that is Brendan and the team,no one else.

  17. POR CIERTO

    True, some of the players he has brought in have been a disaster, there is no denying that, I think when he leaves the money made on his dealings will outweigh the failures, just a hunch.

    No there doesn’t have to be outs before there is any ins, I can just see our bean counters sanctioning anything the manager wants.

  18. The hands cant hit what the eyes cant see on

    @ TURKEYBHOY on 25TH SEPTEMBER 2018 9:43 AM

    “I dont give a toss about “Net spend”.”

    Bit of an issue then. You can’t discount net spend I’m afraid. Brendan has spent over £2m on only four players: Ntcham (£4.5m), Edouard (£9m), Sinclair (£3.5m) and Kouassi (£3m). Three of them I would count as successes. Sinclair was our player of the year in his first year and top goal scorer two years in a row; and Ntcham is being linked with Porto in a deal worth three times as much as we bought him for. Edouard has already contributed a lot in his short period at the club.

    If you want to take the £30m figure you quote and apply the above transfer fees to it, then you reach a figure of £20m for those four players.

    So for Brendan’s remaining signings (all 12 of them: DDV, Bain, Commper, Toure, Hendry, Gamboa, Izzi, Benyu, Morgan, Hayes, Mulumbu and Moussa) you get an average spend of just over £800k. Now, how much do you expect to get from this type of spend from this quality of player?

    Even if I agree with you that Brendan’s transfer record is poor, nevertheless, look at what it’s achieved:

    -double treble;

    -unbeaten season;

    -record turnover;

    -record profit;

    -season ticket waiting list;

    -European football after Christmas;

    -record player sales.

    I will take all that for his “poor” transfer record. More of the same please.

    Out of interest, can you name any manager who gets all his transfer 100% right? Because that is seemingly the standard Brendan is held to.

    He made them invincibles, that was down to top class man management.

    What has happened to knock the team out of kilter is what the support are going balistic about, one side are blaming the manager, the other the board, the truth will be somewhere in the middle.

  21. Anyway,although I was cursing and screaming at the Telly on Sunday,I cant wait to see the team again on Wednesday.Its what I live for.Brendan has another chance to get them going.Broony Mulumbu,N,tcham,Calmac,Griff,Forrest,Boyata,Gordon,KT.Add any 2 others.Hopefully Benkovic,but have not heard anything.

    Should,and I mean should,gub this mob.

    No experiments Brendan,strongest team,get the job done.

  22. BR was a brilliant signing that gave us a huge surge of adrenaline on the park and off it. Everything seemed to gel from the start. We all know of the bounce effect that a new manager normally benefits from. Well we were bouncing off the ceiling such was the BR effect.

    BR ticked pretty much all of our boxes for the ideal Celtic manager. He has bags of top-level experience, he is intelligent, charismatic, canny, confident, motivational . . . and he gets us. He is a Celtic supporter. He believes Celtic should play and win with panache. He has repeated this countless times in interviews.

    That is how we played in 2016-2017.

    And won everything.

    SO what has changed? Why are so many now saying his tactics are poor? That all he cares about is possession?

    Why would he change something that was working so well, something that made us invincible for so long, and replace it with boring, predictable side-to-side and back passing? That to me is the conundrum. It makes no sense.

    I don’t buy for one moment the argument that teams have sussed out how we play and are now defending deeply. Were they not defending deeply in season 2016-2017 to avoid getting hammered? Were they not defending deeply against MoN GS and Neil Lennon’s teams when facing Sutton, Hartson, Larrson etc.?

    Sinclair, Griffiths, Dembele and Roberts frightened the living daylights out of our domestic opponents. They created and scored for fun. Has BR really forgotten how to set up a team to do that? To go out and play to their strengths? To pin back teams in their own half and pulverise them into submission?

    None of it makes sense to me. Unless it as simple as the fact that the key players are not delivering on what they are being asked to do. SS is not creating, Edouard is not scoring, LG is not training hard enough and Ntcham has had his head turned etc. etc.

    I hope more than anything that BR can sort it out. Otherwise the managerial bounce effect across the city might last a lot longer than normal too.

  23. THE HANDS CANT HIT,

    £ 800,000 average for players.How much do you expect to get for this amount.

    Exactly.I did not sign them,Brendan did.His transfer record is quite poor,he inherited a lot of players from Ronnies team,who still play now.

    But its pointless debating with you.You have your agenda.I dont.

    @ TURKEYBHOY on 25TH SEPTEMBER 2018 10:21 AM

    The point that was trying to be made is £800k is a nothing amount and the players we have signed within that bracket (circa £1m) is reflected in their quality (or lack thereof).

    There are of course exceptions, but even going back to MON’s days or Strachan’s, lots of players bought for £1m were money wasted, David Fernandez, Adam Virgo etc.

  27. The hands cant hit what the eyes cant see on

To go out and play to their strengths? To pin back teams in their own half and pulverise them into submission?”

    Therein lies the problem. Two of the four are gone and one has lost his confidence so completely that he is no longer a guaranteed starter.

    I’m afraid that a lot of BR’s first season achievements can be put down to certain individuals raising the quality of the team (Sinclair, Griff, Dembele and Roberts) and others playing above their level. Unfortunately, we have lost a few of the former and many of the latter have regressed to the mean.

  28. THE HANDS CANT HIT WHAT THE EYES CANT SEE – Agreed. But why have they regressed? I wanted to believe that those who were playing above their level were doing so because of superior coaching/fitness/man-management. Why should they now regress? It doesn’t make sense unless the BR bounce effect was just that. And that he is not the superior coach that I certainly believed he was along with most of the rest of the Celtic fans.

    I loved that first season and watching a manager willing to hook a player for not following instructions, change the team set up to counter the other team’s tactics and completely change the flow of a game by making timely substitutes rather than leaving it until the last five mins.

  29. FATHER JACK

    You’re totally spot on. The truth is somewhere in the middle of all this. Maybe one day it will come out in the wash por cierto.
