Teenage Matthews excels on Celtic right

1021

The most interesting point to make about Adam Matthews is that, for another month anyway, he is still a teenager.  You and I have seen enough of these games to know that the occasion has a habit of consuming inexperienced youth but Adam patrolled Celtic’s right with remarkable authority last night.  All the more remarkable considering this was his first game back after injury.

Football business for 2011 is finished and new signing, Swedish international right back, Mikael Lustig (25), is now available for selection.  At 6’3” Mikael has previously played in central defence but Neil Lennon insisted the player was primarily recruited as a right back but, despite the rate Celtic right backs pick up injuries, the need appears greater in central defence.  It’s hard to see Adam Matthews losing the right back berth.

  1. “I have not been told people will have to go before we can get anyone in”

That’s because there is no chance of you getting anyone in, Ally. Even if a few are sold. Never mind: Kyle Hutton’s loan to Partick Thistle has now ended. Expect the press to big him up as the next superstar to be in the coming weeks.

That reminds me. Where is John Fleck these days??

  2. Rangers Players ratings

    By Thomas Jordan

Allan McGregor – Came to Rangers’ rescue with a number of saves but could do nothing to prevent Joe Ledley’s opener. 9.

Kirk Broadfoot – Thrown into the action in place of the injured Steven Whittaker and should have done better at Joe Ledley’s goal. 7.

Kyle Bartley – Replaced the suspended Dorin Goian at the heart of the defence and performed well with several timely challenges and clearances. Better than Mertesacker 8.

Carlos Bocanegra – Squandered a decent chance to open the scoring in the first half but performed his defensive duties well. 3.

Sasa Papac – A solid performance from the Bosnian who also attempted to help out the front players with some forward runs. 8.

Sone Aluko – Impressed on his Old Firm debut and looked far from overawed by the occasion before making way for youth product Gregg Wylde in the second half. 8.

Steven Davis – Always in the right place at the right time, strolled through the match. A rolls Royce of a player who will slot in easily into the EPL 10.

Lee McCulloch – Available for selection after appealing against his red card at St Mirren Park but failed to impose himself enough and was eventually replaced late on due to his ageing years. 9.

Lee Wallace – Could have grabbed the opener when his early header definitely crossed the line. Did not appeal or harangue the official enough 2.

Nikica Jelavic – The only world class player on show last night. Conditions did not help him but even Messi would have struggled with the weather conditions. 10.

Kyle Lafferty – Looked busy enough but failed to cause too many problems for the Celtic defence. Lacks intelligence 3.

    Substitutes:

Gregg Wylde – Added some pace to the match as well as some decent deliveries after replacing Aluko midway through the second half. 4.

David Healy – replaced McCulloch in the 79th minute but his biggest contribution was a swift booking for a mistimed challenge on James Forrest. 8.

Maurice Edu- Came on for Wallace with 11 minutes left but could not make an impact. 3.

  3. Gordon_J

Healy got on before Fleck and at St Mirren they put Bartley on up front before they would risk the future Scotland captain and saviour of our game or has the best wee player at primary not quite made it?

    Green Brigade Run Their Tempo

Say what you like about these vhermin but the truth of the matter is that this group control the complete tempo of their matches. The support they show to their team vocally gets picked up throughout their ground and sets is bouncing.

i was having a chat with my brother on the way home from the game about why its not the same at Ibrox. Its simple.

The Blue Order and Union Bears are fantastic at what they do. The bears are sitting there watching dross week in week out and are bouncing about for 90 minutes doing all they can to get behind the team and create an atmosphere. However the difference is that despite being loud enough for other stands to hear them, the other stands just dont join in enough.

Now we can sit and compare the songs but the facts are there fans WANT to create an atmosphere. Our fans sit in the belief they are there to be entertained and until they are then heehaw vocals shall be offered. WRONG!!!

I dont know what else TBO & UB can do to better the atmosphere at the ground that they havent already explored but the truth is Green Brigade have the attachment of their fans that simply helps filter through their ground.

    We need something the same!!!

    ___________________________________________________

Re: Green Brigade Run Their Tempo

I have to agree, TBO/UB are great lads but they look like a group of away fans. The green brigade on the other hand pretty much orchestrate their entire stadium. We need to find a way to do this at Ibrox, should maybe try the end to end chanting that they do.

    ____________________________________________________

I know this is away from the original point but I thought that was why fans paid their money…..to be entertained !

It’s certainly the mindset in Spanish football……….people go for a day out, have a meal etc then sit back and EXPECT to be entertained…..and they soon let players know it if that entertainment is not forthcoming.

not too much to ask I would have thought

  10. Celtic fans magnificent in derby victory

By: Newsroom Staff on 29 Dec, 2011 09:39

CELTIC returned to the top of the SPL table after a 1-0 victory over Rangers – the team’s ninth league win in a row. And the Hoops go into 2012 with a two-point lead, having been 15 points behind at the start of November.

The atmosphere at Celtic Park was incredible, and the Celtic supporters played their part in roaring the team on to a well-deserved victory.

Celtic Chief Executive Peter Lawwell said: “Our supporters were once again magnificent last night, and that positive backing drove the team on.

“It’s something that Neil and the team always appreciate, and they, like all of us, are delighted with our fantastic support.

“I would also like to pay tribute to everyone who worked behind the scenes to make sure that the game went ahead.

“There were extraordinary and very testing weather conditions throughout the day, and it’s to the credit of the Club’s facilities and operations’ teams that everything was fine for kick-off, as well as everyone who worked to repair the damage to a sign prior to the game. I would like to thank everyone involved for the professionalism and expertise they showed.

“I would also like to thank everyone for their support throughout the year and on behalf of the Club, I’d like to wish all our supporters a very Happy New Year.”

i am thinking that big Mikael will be a welcome addition

he played most if not all of the qualifiers for Sweden

    canny be bad

and he scored one too !

Neil on TV last night sayin CB and CF are his targets !!!

my own hopes are that Jackson Irvine, Paul George,

Callum McGregor, John Herron, Filip Twardzik and GK’s Nick Feely and Robbie Thomson

get a run in our first team at some stage in the near future (2-3 years)

all good players – big Nick could be a great goalie for us if we manage him properly !!

can command the box, plays best when he is angry !! haha (like The Hulk)

    – Robbie been havin a fine season too, but just a wee bit younger as yet

  19. I was watching a dodgy stream last night, also cant recall the incident, but huns are calling for Charlie to be fast-tracked for diving.

Did he? I don’t care as such (like I said I dont care if the ball was over the line, secretely hope it was!) but was wondering if people who saw incident can comment so I can argue with huns.

  21. Paul67,

I agree about Mathews. I was very, very impressed by his performance. Quite outstanding. Trouble is we are now really spoiled for choice in defence. Besides him and the new signing, we have Cha, who has been performing much better of late. We have also Big Dan, who has been playing like the Swedish CB that he is, when he got the injury. Then we have the 2 CBs last night, who were excellent. Izzaguirre is in line to return for LB, which means Joe Ledley can return to his place in the midfield. It just gets better and better.

thanks NOTTHEBUS. The irony in this call to Keevins, and his establishment cronies, is Keevin’s statement about the Europa League. It was the Bhoys’ performance in the Europa league which kick-started our revival IMHO, not the reverse as Keevins is saying. (also says a lot about the quality of the SPL).
