The difficult task of replacing Commons

447

Brendan Rodgers would have looked at Kris Commons age, position and recent injury record and assumed he’s not going to get much from him this season. He’d not be the first Celtic manager to come to that conclusion about Kris.

Kris has created more chances per minutes played than anyone in a Celtic shirt over the last decade, and that includes the golden era of Nakamura, Maloney and McGeady, which brought us into the Champions League knock out stages for the first time.

He didn’t fit Ronny’s system and might not fit Brendan’s, but to win leagues, cups and qualify for Europe, you need someone who can be relied upon to open obstinate defences, and we’ve struggled to find a better tool for this job than Kris Commons.

He’s in the final year of his final Celtic contract, but if he goes, I hope it’s not before 31 August.

    BMCUWPs,

    I know.

I had a look at the Twitter account of the supposed new Head of Marketing.

    Dearie me, as they say.

Congratulations on the 25 years and fair play for all the hard work.

    Days,sometimes. Hours,frequently.

  5. Morning all,

Hearing Mr Toure may be on his way to Paradise.

Not been on here for ages as real life getting in the way but looking forward to the new season and seeing what style the boss can bring.

Dembele I think a brilliant signing and good to see a few of the old squad moved on.

Still think we are a bit behind in our defensive cover but hopefully that will be addressed ASAP.

    Rankers 1872 hmmmmm

The people who can afford to pony up 500 to join, then 50 per month, have already been burned, nay scorched, a few times by sundry boards, cartels and factions associated or affiliated to thems.

Those that have already coughed up are the zealots and/or more money then sense division.

The barrel has been scraped and scraped again, revealing rotting floorboards. What lies below ain’t paydirt!

History reveals the harsh reality that the vast majority of the people, in general, don’t cough up for anything other than match tickets, season books and hats, scarves and badges. (Plus sundry right wing cds dvds etc) . They cannot buy official merchandise for a wee while… Or a few months spare cash for subscriptions.

The 700k or so, already paid up ( if that number is accurate) is the thick end of the wedge – that will be reaching the absolute max available from that source!

We all know that antytime in the past they have been asked to rally to the fleg, they have failed spectacularly. Even when they seemed to be riding the crest of a wave with SDM at his bombastic best (sic).

It is beyond credible that an ongoing stream of cash pouring in. Up to 50,000 regularly paying £50 per month. Ha!

To be honest, I have some sympathy with the Gers fans trying to salvage something for the future of the club they love ( yes, I know…). They don’t realise they are ongoing victims of their Top Down ‘vassal’ culture!

Taken for a ride again and again and again.

Think about it this way. If Celtic were in the same mess, how many thousand Hoops fans would sign up to this dripping roast of a scam ( there would be some ) and for how long!

  8. Apparently Spanish media reporting that Lionel Messi has been sentence to 21 months in jail for tax fraud.

Presumably it will get appealed, but never the less imagine living in a country where that can happen…

I suspect BR needs to scratch him off the prospective signing list for now.

I said yesterday that genuine Rangers supporters had my sympathy,a point James Forrest made in his blog a little later.

I got roasted for it,and that’s no great surprise. Too many of them deserve little better.

    (See what I did there!)

But I also pointed that they have been severely let down by not only their supposed leaders but also by the MSM. And they should not only hang their heads in shame, they should be hung out to dry for their machinations

Good to see support for Biton.

Puzzling that some don’t rate him. He is class. Sadly, his nationality is a factor for some.

Exciting times with Brendan at the helm.

    CAPTAIN BEEFHEART

I honestly don’t think his nationality is a factor. More his attitude.

His skill levels are not really in question, but does he bring them to the party often enough?

Will he sweat blood for a cause?

    Can he turn a game?

Is he bloody interested at all sometimes?

Those are things which I think Celtic supporters have reason to ask about Nir Bitton. His nationality has nothing to do with it.

  14. Captain Beefheart on

Some amount of mocking towards Poland’s Milek on social media.

One screenshot shows a firing squad taking aim at some hapless sap. Sap says, via speech bubble, ‘please let it be Milek!’.

  15. Captain Beefheart on

Bobby, can’t agree with that. His nationality is a factor. Contributions on this very site prove it.

    He is a fabulous player.

    All the best.

    Saltires,

I know, odd in the context of today’s news.

Re-the 700k from RF, remember it’s not going to be used on Projects. It’s going to be ring fenced and used to buy shares later.

    Why?

    Where is it?

Did the board not want to borrow 500k earlier in the season?

One of the most annoying things is the Working Group strategy on ensuring that monies raised would be placed beyond ‘legacy issues.’

Hector? Face painters, SFA, sponsors like Coca-Cola (owed 10k).

‘Not envisaged money will be used as general working capital’

‘Working capital is defined as the difference between current assets and current liabilities. Current assets are the most liquid of your assets, meaning they are cash or can be quickly converted to cash. Current liabilities are any obligations due within one year.’

    I’m not an accountant but…

    Till later

There was no mention of suspended sentence or that Spain allows’s sentences under 2 years to be carried out under probation in the original link I posted. BBC, in their wisdom, chose to state in the original post exactly what I said until they updated the facts you mentioned.

  21. MWD

I don’t think it is, the court told them the sentence can be appealed, but in Spain any sentence under two years can be served by probation instead, no way will he be going to jail, the fine is what will hurt him.

  22. GivehimthemoneyPeterCSC on

The messi decision might explain his recent retirement from international duty

As for Johansen- I would take $1M …Biton- there is a player in there…reminds me a little of arteta/ki-sung Yueng in terms of a player that added a bit of steel to his game would be great…as is, he leaves too much work for the other centre and doesn’t work hard enough to get the ball back…tricky one for Brendan

  23. I have nothing against Nir Biton’s nationality, nor for that matter, the nationality, religion or political persuasion of anyone who serves the Celtic family.

Furthermore, I think basically Nir is a talented football player – however it is my opinion that his energy levels- i.e his ‘engine’, lets him down.

This is the reason that he will not fit in with Brendan’s plans.
