The difficult task of replacing Commons

447

Brendan Rodgers would have looked at Kris Commons age, position and recent injury record and assumed he’s not going to get much from him this season. He’d not be the first Celtic manager to come to that conclusion about Kris.

Kris has created more chances per minutes played than anyone in a Celtic shirt over the last decade, and that includes the golden era of Nakamura, Maloney and McGeady, which brought us into the Champions League knock out stages for the first time.

He didn’t fit Ronny’s system and might not fit Brendan’s, but to win leagues, cups and qualify for Europe, you need someone who can be relied upon to open obstinate defences, and we’ve struggled to find a better tool for this job than Kris Commons.

He’s in the final year of his final Celtic contract, but if he goes, I hope it’s not before 31 August.

Now, this might shock a few but,…..here goes.

Efe Ambrose can do the – Joe Allen job.

If I was a techno-wizard, I’d be able to locate the

video on Phil Mac’s blog where, PM put together

the contents of Big Efe’s debut at Celtic Park in which,

Big Efe played as a front sweeper and, he was superb.

Check out PM’s video and you’ll see what I mean.

Big Efe could be transformed into a front-sweeper-workhorse

by Brendan…..if, Brendan is cute enough ?

Ah mean, imagine, Big Efe transformed into a,

    front-sweeper-workhorse-Morgan-Freeman-Yaya-Toure-type of player.

    Now, that……….would be grand…..imho.

There is a lot of bits & pieces to Big Efe.

All it takes is a cute wizard to put them together.

    Is Brendan that wizard ?

If Brendan puts his mind to it, I think he could be that wizard.

Or, is Big Phil Mac the ‘real’ wizard…..?

Please sumdy…..get Big Phil’s Efe video on here.

Then you’ll see what I mean.

Having said all of that, I worry that Brendan is the type of Celtic

manager that we had in the early 90’s who, goes round the dressing

room trying to be everyone’s pal. That dizny work.

Bottom line……Celtic manager has to be a, devious, ruthless, cold, cunning basturt of yer worst nightmares who will instill into the players that they should be bricking it at the thought of going into the dressing room to face him when…..they haven’t ticked the box.

Commons type tantrums will and, should result in the tantrum player being reduced to dust.

Anyway, Brendan could eclipse MO’N’s era at the club or, he could end up at a Sheffield Wednesday.

    Tick, tock………..

    C’MON the WALES!

    Fella, that is so grand.

Ah mean, Big Efe displays all that magic, I know that

his performance was compiled into a 6 minute video but,

what a 6 minutes – just magical from Big Efe…imho.

Brendan can take Big Efe to the next stage.

Ah mean, in the video he was, George Connolly-Yaya Toure-esque.

Then, in the next game he’s thrown into defence ??????????????

A savvy manager could make Big Efe into a diamond of a player.

C’mon Brendan…..Big Efe could be the catalyst of your Celtic sainthood.

  9. AULD TAM @ 7:28 AM,

Too true, maybe a day to recall the days when Labour could have the likes of Robin Cook in their ranks.

    TINY TIM @ 6:37 AM,

That’s very true, an inevitable symptom of the transfer/signing from the last several years; we’ve bought many prospects and projects, those who have failed to reach the grade are unsellable, those who perform well are sold, leaving those who although better than the majority of the squad, in terms of where Celtic want to be are, as you say, mediocre.

Of course we have notable exceptions and long term senior players in the squad as well.

I am very impressed that BR has taken it upon himself to rigorously go through this squad, give those with genuine potential a chance, move those on who have no place at Celtic, before he Manages the task of strengthening the team.

  12. Morning Bhoys & Ghirls.

With many reports currently doing the rounds suggesting that both Johansen and Bitton are imminently to be the next out of the revolving door, I have to say I am a little concerned about what we are going to be left with! I would happily see the back of Ciftci, Armstrong, Mackay-Steven and Forrest long before losing either Bitton (in particular) or Johansen.

I accept that Johansen didn’t have a great season just passed, but he showed in the previous season what he can do. He has oodles of energy, is combative, tackles and intercepts opposition passes well, can see (and execute) an incisive pass, and is capable of racking up a few goals to boot. Get (and keep) him fully fit and injury free and we should see a return to the 2014-15 Jo Hansen.

As for Bitton, he is genuine class; one of the few players in our squad who could move to a top EPL team succeed. On his game he struts around the pitch with the confidence and assuredness that made van Dijk stand out head & shoulders above those around him. And Bitton too weighs in with a good few strikes, usually spectacular.

Personally I’d prefer to give Johansen the chance to show that he can still deliver for us, and I wouldn’t let Bitton go for anything south of £15M. Looking at the silly money doing the rounds south of the border for largely unproven players at clubs vastly inferior to Celtic, any offer less than that would be an insult to a top player at a great club. If EPL players want our best players then they should be asked to pay EPL prices.

  13. BIGCHIPSUK – 10 IN A ROW (2001-2010)

I would have thought that Jo Hansen was a Brendan kind of player unless of course he wants to go and who would blame him after the abuse he got last year! If I was him I would be tempted to shoot the craw as well as I watched the malingerers of the squad take the same wage as me home…

Bitton and Johansen both suffered last year due the lack of a proper defence midfielder at the club I thought..

    HH

  14. Joe Filippis Haircut on

Morning Bhoys from a sunny Central Scotland BIGCHIPS I can understand your concerns about the rumours on the players reputed to be leaving Celtic. However the money we receive from these departures should be given straight to Brendan to spend on incoming players. If we are genuinely going to play a pressing game we need young super fit players in my opinion so some of our current squad will not cut it I would hope to see at least two incoming players before Fridays deadline but in Brendan I trust. H.H.

  15. Sell Johansen and Bitton, neither would be a great loss, and let the manager sign who he wants for central midfield.

  16. BIGCHIPSUK –

Great post and entirely agree. Nir is only one of a few within our squad who could possibly command such a large fee. That fact alone tells it’s own story in regards to his ability.

Johansen showed great potential in his first season but instead of progressing he’s regressed alarmingly. Too many Celtic fans are quick to write off players who suffer dips in form yet seem to give passes to guys who have never shown such ability. This I will never understand. Especially when we’re talking about players who are still relatively young & inexperienced.

Both these players have the potential to make us better & I wouldn’t be letting either of them go for the low fees currently being mentioned.

    STARRY PLOUGH

“Bitton and Johansen both suffered last year due the lack of a proper defence midfielder at the club I thought..”

I think the whole team suffered for this reason & not just last season either. Hopefully Brendan will have us less exposed to counter attacking football. Get the back four right & totally agree, we need to sign a Wanyama clone to sit in front of the defence.

Would like to see a midfield of

    ………………VW Clone

    ……..Rogic……………..Bitton

  17. Bigchipsuk

I agree with you 100% regarding Bitton. He’s a great player and I wouldn’t let him go.

Regarding Johansen, I think he burnt himself out after his first season with us. I don’t think anyone could keep up that work rate season after season. He played with an injury for much of last season and Ronny wouldn’t drop him because he was a player that Ronny could trust unlike Kris Commons.

This statement was issued by Club 1872 yesterday to calm growing unrest among Sevconians since the resignations of 3 Directors at the weekend.

Club 1872 have big plans and are hoping to attract 50,000 members from the worldwide fanbase:)) They claim to already have 10,000 members, inherited from RF and the RT.

At £50 per month that’s £30000000 p.a. turnover. Not counting the joining fee of £500 a pop.

Not forgetting Mr King’s admin fee of 5% = £1500000

A lot of money for loans and projects…

    Club 1872 Member Update

    5 July, 2016

Club 1872 notes both the story in the Sunday Mail and the letters which have appeared on the internet regarding the resignations of Kelly Johnstone, Brian Donohoe and Peter Ewart from the Rangers First board. We would like to make it very clear that contrary to what is said in the blog accompanying the letters it was not Club 1872 that placed the story with the Sunday Mail. It was Brian Donohoe. We would also make it clear that Peter Ewart did not participate in this. It is unfortunate and unfair on him that he has become tangled up in a situation not of his making.

It is difficult to respond to much of the content of Brian and Kelly’s letters as they do not deal in substantive issues. However, if they had any genuine issues it would have been better to have raised and sought to resolve them through the Club 1872 working group.

It has been clear from the start however that the prime motivation for both Brian and Kelly, which was partially articulated both in their resignation letters and in working group meetings, was to stall or stop the formation of Club 1872. Having that view was fine and there were a very small number of members of RF who shared that opinion, however, after RF’s members voted overwhelmingly to form Club 1872, the directors of RF had a duty to implement that decision. Brian and Kelly have chosen not to do so and instead to spread meritless accusations publicly. Having resigned as directors of RF they no longer owe a duty to its members but this remains disappointing. Neither Brian nor Kelly resigned from the working group or communicated with it before going to the Sunday Mail which is doubly disappointing.

One of the reasons for the formation of Club 1872, as articulated in the proposal document, was the need to share resources to grow and encourage fan ownership and representation.

Club 1872 now has a robust IT system which will allow us to communicate with members and deal with queries in a much quicker and more efficient manner. That system is being further improved and enhanced on a regular basis ahead of a major recruitment push. Members will be able to vote through the website and will be regularly polled on all aspects of Club 1872 and Rangers. We ask existing members of RF and RST to help us in this regard by ensuring they create a profile on the new website. We will be emailing them all again in the near future with a reminder of how to do so.

Already our dedicated admin staff have answered over 1000 emails in just a month since launch. We have had a large number of positive comments from members about how good the response rate and service has been.

We have a marketing consultant who has put together a plan to grow the organisation over the next several months and we have the resource to carry it out. The most visible parts of this plan will kick in around the start of the new season but supporters will start to see some progress over the next week or so.

We have already invested in the IT infrastructure, office premises, marketing materials, relevant database licences and full time administrative staff which we believe are required to provide better service to members and a better opportunity for the organisation to grow.

We have started the process of direct engagement with RSCs and will continue and extend that over the coming months. This will include visits to individual clubs throughout Scotland and organised events in Northern Ireland and elsewhere.

The task of the Club 1872 working group is to put in place the building blocks of the organisation that the members of RF and the RST voted over 90% in favour of on three separate occasions. Our job is to learn from the issues faced by both RF and the RST and present Club 1872 to its members and the new Board they will elect in the best shape possible given the available resource. A huge amount of hard work is being done to allow the newly elected board to hit the ground running and grow the organisation into a single, strong, representative voice for Rangers supporters with a positive working relationship with our football club and a significant and growing shareholding in the company that owns it.

We hope it is useful to members to clarify a couple of matters which have been highlighted as concerns:

    1. All monies received by RF and RST to acquire shares in Rangers International Football Club PLC is ring fenced for that purpose. It will not be used for Projects. Going forward members can decide whether they want their donations to be reserved for Shares or Projects when they create a profile. If no choice is made it will (after deduction of the 5% for admin) be split evenly between the two.

    2. Club 1872 will not gift money to Rangers Football Club. Monies contributed for Projects will be designed to benefit supporters and the footballing success of our Club. Members will decide at all times which Projects to pursue.

Club 1872 is not about two individuals. Members will vote for a new Club 1872 board in August/September and it will not be about the individuals elected in that process either. It is important that those standing for election understand that they are there to enact the will of the members of Club 1872 and that every key decision about Club 1872 will be taken by its members.

We will not be sidetracked further from the very important background work required to establish Club 1872 and ensure its strong foundations. We take this opportunity to thank the 10k + current members of Club 1872 and the members of RF and the RST for helping Club 1872 reach this point. Club 1872 will continue to reach out and engage with thousands of other Rangers supporters over the coming season.
