The Juninho EBT

1126

I see several “fans’ groups” are engaged on the subject of our old friend, Juninho, who played around 13 games for Celtic eight years ago and benefited from an Employee Benefit Trust before and during his time at the club.

Can you believe this is where their focus is?

As Sir David Murray and a gaggle of his former directors will tell you, there is nothing illegal in EBTs, it’s the undeclared second contracts the football authorities have a problem with. Juninho’s EBT was not subject to any contract or side letter whatsoever. Moreover, our then chairman, Brian Quinn, regarded EBTs with suspicion and instructed the club to declare Juninho’s to the Revenue. Celtic even paid tax on money paid to the EBT.

The SFA and SPL, and every journalist in Scotland interested in getting a story right, are fully aware of the facts.

I suppose running with this beats looking at links between Green and Whyte. Keep up the good work, guys!

And for the record, stripping titles is not the ultimate sanction, not by the length of Argyle St.

  2. I know Aberdeen are gonna be one of the better teams to visit park head this season but the game showed we need some firepower badly. If stokes or hooper get injured we will struggle. For wednesday night I would go

    ………………Forster…..…

    Matthews..rogne….mulgrew…ledley

    Kris………..vic……..kayal…….sammi

    …………..McCourt

    ……………….hooper

I prefer ledley in midfield and prefer vic in midfield but think with ledley left back it gives us bit more safety until izzy ups his game. Kayal and vic should offer good protection to back four, commons, paddy will link up well. Both smart players.

Paddy McCourt? For a Euro qualifier? Seriously?

For me Paddy McCourt nothing more than a mascot for the GB.

    Personally I’d punt him.

    MWD

He upped the tempo in Aberdeen game, watch his goals for Celtic on YouTube. Man has talent. Giving him 5/20mins in games isn’t enough.

Team I have put out has enough defensive players. Let paddy roam and create. The Celtic way

I see where you’re going with that team and agree Izzy needs more time

However, feel that line-up lacks fitness and strength to match a team half way through their season

It’s gonna be a right tough game and I would want Joe in mid with Kelvin CB and Charlie at LB

Play Kris in behind ghoops at expense of Paddy and we have a fighting chance and enough quality to snatch a goal, maybe two, on the break if they open up chasing the winner.

as ever we need to avoid losing that daft early goal

  8. How EBT’s Work – and How They Go Wrong – the Melchester Rovers Debacle

Suddenly the acronym EBT is front and centre in the sporting news, leading some to speculate that a decision from the Tax Tribunal dealing with the appeal against tax assessments by Rangers is imminent.

I have therefore, in an effort to clarify and explain the matter to new readers, taken a post I wrote in January and revised and extended it.

It also has Roy Race and Melchester Rovers in it.

I should declare that neither the famous footballing hero, Mr Race, nor his world-famous club, are accused of wrongdoing by me. They merely provide a hypothetical example.

In addition, I refer to a Mr Waxendale-Balker. He should not be taken as having any connection to a tax expert called Mr Baxendale-Walker.

On with the explanation – http://scotslawthoughts.wordpress.com/2012/08/07/how-ebts-work-and-how-they-go-wrong-the-melchester-rovers-debacle/

  9. MWD,

I have to agree with you about McCourt. Far too often he has failed to deliver. I would persist in playing him for15/20 minutes, if we need a goal, as he can do things most others can’t. Stokes, for me, comes into the same category, in that he fails to deliver. Mind you, he is also a lot less skilful than McCourt. I would rather have Murphy or Watt , although I wuldn’t start with any of them on Wednesday.

  10. Paddy won’t, rightly so, be anywhere near the starting 11 tomorrow night. Running up blind alleys and losing possession is the last thing we need. Creativitiy will come from Commons and Forrest will provide the pace we were lacking on Saturday.

All Paddy is doing at the moment is stopping young McGeouch getting his chance. Time to see if Ian Holloway is still willing to pay us £1m for him.

  11. MWD

    Totally agree

Its a good job Daryll Murphy was there to take the pressure off him on Saturday.

  12. ……the word on the street is that Hot-Shot Hamish had an EBT as well…………

………………….ye never got it from me, right!?

  13. Parkheadcumsalford

    Murphy? Not for me.

Watt. I’d be giving young Tony a starting slot in the HunfreeHell.

Kayal33. I also agree re. McGeoch.

If the young lads coming through are not afforded the chance to shine in the HunfreeHell this season then we’d be as well wrapping up our academy, stick a big postage stamp on and post the whole shebang off to timbucktu.

  15. I am NL in NZ Tauranga on

MWD Paddy did add quite a bit of energy on Saturday up front. Until we can secure better more cosistent firepower I would keep Paddy around. He may even get better if played in position like our Sammie. Nothing wrong with a supersub. On Wednesday we need to attck the Finns. If we try to keep a clean one we will be under pressure. The hoops will be up for it , it will define their season.

  16. I’d sell the following and give their squad places to

    Wilson – Fraser

    Ki – McGeough

    Kayal – Twardzek

    Stokes – Watt

Sell Hooper as well and sign a Striker who can put the ball in the net and read the game better than Hooper(which lets be honest wouldn’t be that hard)

  20. IMHO the Derrypele should be given an extended run in the team.He is an unique talent, but the failure of Lenny to see his best position, for the team,is keeping him back.

Give Paddy a completely free role, let him follow the ball, the more he is on the ball, the more we will create.Dont tell me this will weaken the midfield,if we cannot allow one player the freedom to play,in Scottish football,we are worse than I think we are.

    Let the ball players play.HH

I plan on taking Johnny Smyth’s mother – Dorothy Smyth – out for a nice seafood dinner – and then never calling her again. (thumbsup)

  24. Paddy McCourt does have skill but not for me. He does not play regularly, that is because he has no stamina. If he had he would be one of the first on the team sheet.

I do agree if you are going to bring him on, you need to give him more than 5/20 minutes. In my opinion other teams have the measure of him. He is a player I would bring on if you are 3-0 or more up.

He was worth a punt at £250,000. He is not considered worthy of a regular place, I would cash in.

MWD is correct, if he was not a Tim from N.I. he would not get the adulation he gets. If he were from North Lanarkshire or other another part of Scotland he would not be so revered.

    Keep the Faith!

  25. Over the last few months some posting here have felt that Celtic should have been making statements on certain matters. Others expressed the opinion that in saying nothing, the club was playing a blinder.

Given the weekend’s smokescreen and Murray’s out burst yesterday, for the sake of the fans. PL and DD should now be issuing an unambiguous statement on the Juninho affair.

  26. Greenjedi

When Messi goes back,he follows the ball, that’s why a lot of his and teams goals, are made from him running from deep positions, the gaps are there when the other team are attacking.

Let the ball players play .HH

  27. Fanadpatriot,

Agreed this season we shold have plenty of opportunities to give Paddy an extended run.

He can do a similar job to Kris Commons and I have seen nothing to suggest that Kris can maintain an acceptable level of performance week in week out for the whole season.

We will be playing many games against bottom six SPL teams and lower division clubs in cup ties. Ample opportunity to give Paddy a run and try out some of the youngsters.

  28. The Honest Mistake loves being first on

    What’s with the Paddy bashing?

Regardless of which nationality he is, he has scored some great goals for the team, played some beautiful passes and at the same time I struggle to think of a single goal that he is at blame for. He is the Hail Mary option and he has delivered from this position more than anyone I can remember with the exception of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Does he deserve a starting place? Maybe not but his impact as a late substitution is an asset to the team.

    Hail hail.

  29. Problem with Paddy McCourt is that 20 minutes isn’t enough and 45 minutes is too much!

Well we should bench rogne then cause for me he doesn’t attack enough.

The whole story that paddy doesn’t have stamina should be long gone, he started about 5/6 games in a row over christmas including 2-0 at ibrox and got motm in a couple those games. If he got more than 10mins every now and then that would also help his stamina.

And the argument he has been given enough chances, he hasn’t got nearly as many as sammi and thankfully he has come good and one the first in most peoples selection.

I think some people people are finally seeing there is more to his game than dribbling, the more u don’t expect paddy to beat 5men everytime the more u will be impressed. Looking at some of his goals can any1 picture forrest takin on 3/4 players and scoring.

Paddy should be played as much as possible until christmas to finally see of worth keeping.

I think lennons afraid to start him but also think Lennon is afraid to lose him and regret it.
