The Juninho EBT

1126

I see several “fans’ groups” are engaged on the subject of our old friend, Juninho, who played around 13 games for Celtic eight years ago and benefited from an Employee Benefit Trust before and during his time at the club.

Can you believe this is where their focus is?

As Sir David Murray and a gaggle of his former directors will tell you, there is nothing illegal in EBTs, it’s the undeclared second contracts the football authorities have a problem with. Juninho’s EBT was not subject to any contract or side letter whatsoever. Moreover, our then chairman, Brian Quinn, regarded EBTs with suspicion and instructed the club to declare Juninho’s to the Revenue. Celtic even paid tax on money paid to the EBT.

The SFA and SPL, and every journalist in Scotland interested in getting a story right, are fully aware of the facts.

I suppose running with this beats looking at links between Green and Whyte. Keep up the good work, guys!

And for the record, stripping titles is not the ultimate sanction, not by the length of Argyle St.

  1. On the Paddy debate: he played behind Sammi in the 2-0 game at Ibrox, a pairing which has bafflingly never been repeated. I say this not so much for Paddy’s benefit, but because of the incredible performance Sammi turned in that day (often scathingly mentioned by Sammi bashers as the game which won him a 3 yr contract). Stokes is carrying an injury and Hooper is not a lone striker. Surely Sammi has more going for him as our one man up front?

  2. The SPL today announced a partnership with YouTube. Celtic supporters can catch highlights from every Clydesdale Bank Premier League match for the next three seasons on the video-sharing website via the ‘splofficial’ channel.

The groundbreaking deal is a first for league football in the UK. From season 2012/13 ‘splofficial’ will be the place to catch all the goals, skills, best saves and top tackles from the top tier of Scottish football, while being a platform for supporters to share their own videos and experiences as they follow their club throughout the season.

The ‘splofficial’ channel will also cover pre and post-match reaction from players and managers.

Celtic will also soon be launching their own channel where supporters will be able to catch up with Neil Lennon and the Bhoys away from the pitch and gain unprecedented access to behind-the-scenes at Celtic Park.

The ‘splofficial’ channel can be accessed via the following URL: http://www.youtube.com/splofficial

Match highlights will be available for supporters in the UK to view from 6pm on Sundays.

Stuart MacPhee, SPL Commercial Manager, said: “Launching the ‘splofficial’ channel represents a new chapter in online fan engagement for our league.

“Making Clydesdale Bank Premier League content available on YouTube will allow fans to access all the best action, on and off the pitch, whenever they want and wherever they are, be it at home on the laptop or on their smartphone on the bus to work.”

Stephen Nuttall, Senior Director, Sports for YouTube Europe, Middle East and Africa, said: “Football fans worldwide naturally go to YouTube to catch up on goals and highlights.

“Our partnership with The Scottish Premier League will give the global YouTube audience access to all aspects of Scottish football from the best on-field action to exclusive behind-the-scenes footage.”

Paddy McCourt is only a mascot for the GB is probably the funniest thing I’ve heard on CQN in a long time. Couldnt stop laughing when I read that. Personally, I agree with u re why he only gets a few mins here and there. He has zero pace, he can beat a player (at SPL Level) but hasnt got the ability to drive away from players.

P.S. Dont tell Smashing Milk Bottles that u are not a fan of Paddybhoy McCourt, he was singing “Dont sell McCourt” at top of his voice on Sat

    post match in Whistlin Kirk!

Zero pace ? Paddy starts at a jog then using his burst of speed to beat men.. Look at any his goals.

Thank god he can only beat players at spl level, exactly what we need ? Or we moving to epl soon .

The huns paid the money over to the trustees.

Once they did that the money is no longer theirs and they have no control over it. They can make suggestions to the trustees and so long as those suggestions are in line with the purposes of the trust the trustees could act in accordance with the suggestions. On the other hand the trustess could tell the huns to get stuffed.

What the huns can’t do is ask for money to be paid back to them.

So even if the loans are called up it goes back into the trust, not to the huns.

  8. The one and only appearance McCourt has had away in Europe was the final 10 minutes when we were already losing 4-0 to Utrecht, and yet he is the guy everyone is focusing one?. Rather than take aim at Paddy, let’s look at the players who have featured more regularly away from home in European competition. Here’s my 3 bad, 3 good.

    3 bad:

Wilson: Only played once, against Atletico Madrid. Top class opposition. Nevertheless, he turned in a turgid performance at CB, and was directly at fault for the 2nd goal. Keep well away!

I’m sorry, but James Forrest has had 5 opportunities abroad and has come up woefully short. From the disaster of Utrecht to Fraser’s heroics v Udinese, Forrest’s pace/cutting in from the right has failed to carve open European defences in the way he has managed to do in the SPL. Based on this, Lenny will play him tomorrow (heheh!), but the kid has acres of ground to make up.

Hooper: Against Atletico and Udinese, Hooper looked very ordinary. Yes, he scored v Udinese, a tap-in after fine work by Sammi on the left, but for the majority of the game he was nowhere. I see many are going for 4-4-1-1 v Helsinki. Hooper is a good player, but never a lone forward in a million years. A link-up striker if ever there was one.

    3 good:

The talk over who plays will naturally centre arund outfield players, but for me Fraser Forster showed in the Udinese match he has the class, and more importantly the temperament, to be Celtic’s most valuable asset away in Europe.

Samaras. Yes, his form is a worry, but we need his experience and general all-round play for these games. If you’re up against it, there’s no better out-ball than Sammi.

Wanyama. Played CM against Rennes, CB in Udinese. Not much to choose between either performance. If we’re going 4 at the back, Vic is a must in CM in terms of the assurance, power and drive he provides in the middle. Given our weakness in defence, however, still a lot to be said for him at CB, especially on the right of a three-man defence, where he plays more of an attacking role.

McLeish…..often referred to as “the freckle with legs” in the Fin house.

  19. East Fife chairman Sid Collumbine admits it would be beyond his wildest dreams if tonight’s League Cup clash with Rangers attracted anywhere near a capacity crowd.

The fallen Glasgow giants host the Fifers in their first competitive home game since being kicked out of the SPL, although the fact the fixture has been moved to midweek is expected to have a huge impact on this evening’s attendance figure.

With almost half the gate receipts heading to East Fife however, Collumbine hopes fans of both clubs will turn out in their droves – and potentially set the Methil club up financially for the season ahead.

”Rangers were expecting 40,000 before it got moved, but they reckon it could be between 20,000 and 25,000 because it’s now on a Tuesday night,” the chairman explained.

”We’ve got a lot of supporters not going because they have work in the morning and it disappoints us greatly – the two teams, in actual fact.

”It was the police’s decision to put it off and it’s just our sheer bad luck that Celtic were at home on Saturday as we might have got it played then.

”I suggested the Friday night but the police wouldn’t entertain that, so that’s been the big problem.

”But I live in hope there’s a big crowd and it would be great for East Fife if it was to be a sell-out – that would not even have been in my wildest dreams.

”It’s a massive occasion for the boys and we’ve no problems playing at a big park like Ibrox because we’ve got a big park as well.

”I hope the pressure doesn’t get to them but as long as my team goes out there and gives it everything they’ve got, I’ll be happy.”

The game will obviously have huge significance for East Fife manager Gordon Durie, who spent seven years of his career at Ibrox and played a big part in helping Rangers secure nine consecutive league titles.

Durie will therefore be among friends when he pits his wits against his former team-mate Ally McCoist, but he still hopes his side can give the relaunched Rangers a stern test this evening.

”It’s a fantastic draw for the club and I’m looking forward to it,” he said. ”It’s my first visit to Ibrox as a manager, but really it’s not about me. It’s about the players and the club.

”We told the players they had to focus on the Peterhead game first, which they did, and we can look forward now to going to Ibrox and hopefully putting in a good performance.

”I don’t think the crowd will be as big as it would have been at the weekend, but it will still be decent.

”It’s Rangers’ first home game of the newco era and it will be a first opportunity for the fans to have a look at the players the club have brought in.

”Financially, I couldn’t put a figure on what it will be worth to East Fife, but I know it will set us up nicely for the next few years.”

Four East Fife supporters’ buses will be heading to Ibrox this evening and tickets have been selling well, although there were still thought to be around 300 available last night.

Enjoying a wee break in Gran Canaria, and have been scrabbling around trying to catch up with the various news lines that have developed over the past 48 hours.

David Murray’s statement is interesting from 2 perspectives:

Firstly, its timing. Seems odd that he has kept schtum for years on the whole EBT malarkey, only to break cover now, along with Alex McLeish who’s looking at a £1.7M tax exposure and the loss of every trophy he ever won bar the English League Cup and a couple of 2nd tier league wins. Might presage the FTT decision.

Secondly, if this is his justification, his defence against the allegations made on a decade of fielding ineligible players, it’s pretty poor material. I would have thought he’d have something a little more convincing to say.

    Golf…

Magic time once again at Aberdour. I’ve never met a CQNer I didn’t immediately get on with, and that record continues after friday’s CQN Open.

Played the local course here at Anfi yesterday. It’s pretty mucj carved out of a volcano and some of the holes are extraordinary. The 14th for instance is 575 yards long, with the tee about 200 feet up in the cliff face. The drive is in the air for what seems like an episode of Eastenders.

Couldn’t understand why my irons were all dropping short. I hit a 7 iron 155 yards every day of the week. Yesterday every one fell ten yards short. I figured out afterwards that the distances were provided in meters! What a numptie!

If anyone knows of a pub to watch tomorrow’s game in the Puerto Rico area of Gran Canaria, let me know.

Yes, I used to give my opinion re. the hellbellies whereabouts until I realised they’d simply left their senses completely and just jumped about at random. Why, I even spotted one their lardbucket types on the pavements of Bournemouth the other day, waddling fearfully along a back street. He wasn’t worth a nanosecond of my time, but oh how I laughed as I passed him, resplendent in my Celtic t-shirt. He wept.

I never worry if I get no response on here. I realise I may be regarded as something of an arriviste although I ‘lurked’ for many a moon on my old steam-powered pc ; then I got an iPad and I was unbound, unchained in my florid prose. Also,I don’t live in Glasgow these days and I feel I cannot participate in the fun and frolics as much as would generally be required of a full-time fan. But, I am familiar with the culinary delights of Babbity Bowsers (the haggis, neeps & tatties live fondly in my mind) ,the banter of Tennent’s on the west end,the provenance and quality of the bevvy in The Sorry Heid.

I visit ‘the dear green place’ when I can,and once there, I beat a hotfooted path to Paradise and the superstore.

I support,in my mind at least, the club we all love as much as the most fanatic of the GB and I have been part of the Celtic Community from the day I was born : that’s a fact. And on that proud, yet somehow egomaniacal note,I bid you good morning.
