The Juninho EBT

1126

I see several “fans’ groups” are engaged on the subject of our old friend, Juninho, who played around 13 games for Celtic eight years ago and benefited from an Employee Benefit Trust before and during his time at the club.

Can you believe this is where their focus is?

As Sir David Murray and a gaggle of his former directors will tell you, there is nothing illegal in EBTs, it’s the undeclared second contracts the football authorities have a problem with. Juninho’s EBT was not subject to any contract or side letter whatsoever. Moreover, our then chairman, Brian Quinn, regarded EBTs with suspicion and instructed the club to declare Juninho’s to the Revenue. Celtic even paid tax on money paid to the EBT.

The SFA and SPL, and every journalist in Scotland interested in getting a story right, are fully aware of the facts.

I suppose running with this beats looking at links between Green and Whyte. Keep up the good work, guys!

And for the record, stripping titles is not the ultimate sanction, not by the length of Argyle St.

    kdc,

they dont link up well, they both play the same position and neither covers back well enough, Forrest in fact does not contribute on any defensive cover when Brown is playing.

  2. If Paddy McCourt is so good, then someone will be able to list the numerous European and rangers games that he turned on their head with a bit of his ‘Magic’.

    No?

I have a feeling Vic might play at CH and Kayal in the midfield.

  7. CELTIC are delighted to announce that this weekend’s match against Real Madrid in Philadelphia will raise funds and awareness for the work of leading humanitarian organisation, Concern Worldwide.

Neil Lennon’s side will take on the Spanish giants at Lincoln Financial Field as part of the 2012 World Football Challenge.

And Celtic will take to the field wearing the world-famous green and white Hoops, which will carry the Concern logo on the sleeve to encourage support for the charity.

The match between the Scottish and Spanish champions will be broadcast across the United States on ESPN, and throughout the UK and Ireland on ITV4 (KO: 7pm) UK time)

People viewing the game at home and in attendance on the day will be asked to give what they can to Concern via SMS. Funds raised will go directly to the charity which works to tackle poverty and alleviate hunger in 25 of the world’s poorest countries.

Celtic Chief Executive Peter Lawwell, said: “Celtic Charity Fund was established in 1995 to use our strong charitable heritage as a catalyst for positive change in the world.

“Each night, one in seven people in the world go to bed hungry and in a plentiful world this is not acceptable. We urgently need funds to continue our work to tackle this problem and this match is a fantastic occasion for us to highlight the difference that Celtic supporters can make to the lives of those less fortunate.”

Saying that the guy only gets a shot at the team because of his nationality, name and place of birth is having a go at him IMO.

No something I’ve noticed, I’ll keep an eye out for that.

I like brown on the right or the right of a middle three, I think he’s wasted and a weakness in the team as part of a middle 2. Ledley is better than brown in the middle two but I I prefer him left or the left of a middle three, allows him to indulge his attacking instinct more IMO.

Vic is the man we should build round IMO. Two widemidfield/winger/extrastriker slots up for grabs in the formation. It’s no happening for Sammi just now and he never gets to the byeline so he dips out for me. If the ball is left I’d like to see the rightsided wide man make up an extra striker and vise versa of the ball is right.

    Re the Paddy McCourt dedate.

THE MANAGER DISNY FANCY HIM OR HE’D BE IN THE TEAM EVERY WEEK!

He is and will continue to be a bit part player for us as long as Neil is in place.

Tony Watt can’t get picked for the first team squad so no matter how many of us would like to see him getting the chance, it doesn’t look likely in the near future especially as it is rumoured we are looking to sign another striker.

The manager prefers the experience of Murphy, Stokes and Hooper to the youth and exuberance and confidence of the younger players.

How many players have we produced from the youth academy that feature regularily in the first team?

    So I’m with MWD.

    Punt McCourt.

    kdc,

agreed with most of that, but Brown has only one good position IMO right in a 3 man midfield, we have too many specialists being shoehorned into positions not suited, we have enough of a squad to play all the players in their preferred positions for all formations, problem is, the manager appears to have too many favorites he wants on the park regardless of formation.

When he appraises played after games, his appraisal usually takes into account the fact that a player is out of position and we have to expect a bit of lieniency.

I’m a fan of playing the best player in their best positions regardless of the formation.

Not, get the best players on the park but out of position, regardless of formation.

Well at least I know what I mean :o)

    philbhoy..,

the manager has targets to achieve, he will not risk failing, as it would mean his job, also if they cant oust so called average players then maybe they are not as good as most make out.

We have quite a number of young foreign players who have managed to walk into the team.

I had a discussion about Paddy … his defensive play was excellent.

Looks to me like the sammi bashers are scrambling about looking for a new vicTIM.

    ————————————————————————

    Agree with this observation.

Funnily enough, I watched this aspect of Paddy’s play closely at the weekend, and, as an example, twice in a 4-5 minute period he tracked back, put in a tackle, won the ball back and passed it on to one of the good guys. I do think, as with Big George, that some (not all) people criticise without looking at what is actually happening. Had one of the “Samaras, you are fekin’ p@sh!!!” brigade behind me at the weekend. At one point the ball was crossed in, I think to Hooper, to the far edge of the 6-yard box. Hopper heads it back across, fairly aimlessly – no Celtic player anywhere near the direction he headed it. Does Hoops get it for the poor header? No – it’s Sammy’s fault for not being where the ball landed!! WTF!!!!

Not saying Sammy or Paddy are perfect, but better to comment on what they actually do, not on pre-conceived stereotypes.

    Present company excepted of course.

Oh yeah, that minutes silence that we defiled by purposefully contracting the cold. Shame on us!

  27. Snake Plissken on

I bet that Bangura is one hell of an athlete. Bet his six-packs is rippling and he can run for fun but he canny play football.

    Shame that.

Sadly Paddy McCourt’s fitness is an issue or he would be a world beater. When you have quick feet and ability like his it should be used far more often.

None of our players can do what Paddy can – dribble properly. He is not consistent but how many starts has he had as a Celtic player?

Before Commons signed he was starting and he was the key driving force in the team when we were struggling before Sami had his two goal game of his life against Dead Parrot FC and Paddy played the 90 and did defensive duties to aplomb that day. He beat Motherwell for us a few games before that, he turned a few games that season and should have been on at Inverness a damn sight earlier than he was and sick-note Maloney should never have been in that team.

Paddy McCourt will never be everyone’s favourite and his fitness is an issue but he can do something with the ball so few players can nowadays.

A cult figure yes, but we should be encouraging and developing players like that in Scotland and not just filling teams with 6 foot goons who can run fast, kick hell out of the opposition and heider a baw – that is really where Scottish football has gone wrong – over-emphasis on height and physicality and little on skill. Whereas in the 80’s we had an abundance of tanner baw players, now we have next to none. Therein lies the problems of Scottish football – skill was ignored for athleticism, height and physicality.

It is ok to be an athlete but you need to be able to play as well. Barca’s team are athletes but by God they can play as well.

    A balance is required.

  28. I think a lot on here are missing the point, the team that played most of the match against Aberdeen, struggle to beat a team consisting the following.

Anderson fre e transfer from Derby.

    Naismith free transfer from Huddersfield.

    Osborne free transfer from Coventry.

    Hughes free transfer from Motherwell.

Do you not think Paddy would have run riot against them,if he had started the game.Watching the game there are quite a few unfit players.

    Play the ball players.HH.
