The Juninho EBT

1126

I see several “fans’ groups” are engaged on the subject of our old friend, Juninho, who played around 13 games for Celtic eight years ago and benefited from an Employee Benefit Trust before and during his time at the club.

Can you believe this is where their focus is?

As Sir David Murray and a gaggle of his former directors will tell you, there is nothing illegal in EBTs, it’s the undeclared second contracts the football authorities have a problem with. Juninho’s EBT was not subject to any contract or side letter whatsoever. Moreover, our then chairman, Brian Quinn, regarded EBTs with suspicion and instructed the club to declare Juninho’s to the Revenue. Celtic even paid tax on money paid to the EBT.

The SFA and SPL, and every journalist in Scotland interested in getting a story right, are fully aware of the facts.

I suppose running with this beats looking at links between Green and Whyte. Keep up the good work, guys!

And for the record, stripping titles is not the ultimate sanction, not by the length of Argyle St.

    Re McCourt

Quite how he does some of the things he has I’ll never know – fantastic talent but I don’t think he does it often enough with great consistency. The one time he did he started a run of about 5 games then dislocated his shoulder at Rugby Park.

You could argue that he doesn’t get the game time but I think he does enough when he does get the chance.

I’d keep him for the rest of the season, playing a part when he can and let his contract run its course so he can have a crack at a championship club.

I bet that Bangura is one hell of an athlete. Bet his six-packs is rippling and he can run for fun but he canny play football.

    Shame that.

Sadly Paddy McCourt’s fitness is an issue or he would be a world beater. When you have quick feet and ability like his it should be used far more often.

None of our players can do what Paddy can – dribble properly. He is not consistent but how many starts has he had as a Celtic player?

Before Commons signed he was starting and he was the key driving force in the team when we were struggling before Sami had his two goal game of his life against Dead Parrot FC and Paddy played the 90 and did defensive duties to aplomb that day. He beat Motherwell for us a few games before that, he turned a few games that season and should have been on at Inverness a damn sight earlier than he was and sick-note Maloney should never have been in that team.

Paddy McCourt will never be everyone’s favourite and his fitness is an issue but he can do something with the ball so few players can nowadays.

A cult figure yes, but we should be encouraging and developing players like that in Scotland and not just filling teams with 6 foot goons who can run fast, kick hell out of the opposition and heider a baw – that is really where Scottish football has gone wrong – over-emphasis on height and physicality and little on skill. Whereas in the 80′s we had an abundance of tanner baw players, now we have next to none. Therein lies the problems of Scottish football – skill was ignored for athleticism, height and physicality.

It is ok to be an athlete but you need to be able to play as well. Barca’s team are athletes but by God they can play as well.

    A balance is required.

    Excellent post

If Celtic can’t find a spot for paddy in this season spl especially the Homes games then I will be disappointed .

We don’t expect our centre backs to bomb forward and score goals. Paddy needs more game time and he will be excellat. I don’t think Lenny has given him a fair crack. Thrown him on in games we are struggling expecting a miracle is unfair.

Because when that miracle doesn’t happen and the killer pass or dribble didn’t come off for him at a crucial time in the game then people will be hard on him. Maybe that’s what’s happening judging by some posts on here. Players get 80/90 min games an do nowt , paddy gets 5/10min . Big disadvantage

It’s Murray all right. I’m assuming ‘they’ refers to the SPL and the SFA. It’s a sad attempt to curry favour with angry huns, in the hope they’ll strategically catapult themselves into Hampden’s walls, accompanied by a jaunty yet slightly irritating jingle.

  5. Philbhoy - It's just the beginning! on

If the players are not fit, whose fault is that?!

Will someone please pay me £10,000 per week and I promoise my level of fitness will never be an issue.

    Ever, ever, ever!

We are talking now about spoilt brats who have never had it so good and it doesn’t seem to matter if they are unfit, they’ll still get a game.

    Sack Lennon and the board!

  6. I would for one be aware that the huns will get over 40 odd thousand tonight and so they should if there fans are everything that they have told us they are ….

    You know

    Cheats dirty smelly and ugly

Its not tonight’s attendance that will show us its mid nov or near xmass that we will see but I do believe that if that’s the price £15 they will get 40 k most weeks as it becomes affordable to go to the game possibly will see an upsurge in parent child at £20 that’s pretty good would love that week in week out for us .

  7. Would rather see a youngster given a chance than Paddy. Not Paddy bashing, just an opinion. Paddy can do many wonderful things, but not very often and he slows play down. Paddy will never be a first choice first team player so don’t see the point in holding onto him if someone comes in with a decent offer. If he stays then i’ll enjoy the moments of magic but would rather see McGeouch given a chance to see if he’s good enough to be a first team regular.

As i said, not Paddy bashing, just an opinion.

  8. Thinking the same

Why is evetyones wife out tonight ??

ASK thems to get you a program for the game the night and watch either excuse or rage

For the wages SevCo are paying out at this current time, they will need to sell out every single home game in every competition to come even close to covering their outlay

    I’ll say it again

Here’s where I think the issue lies. We’ve all seen Paddy dribble and get past players. However we’ve also all seen him dribble and end up 5 feet in front of the ball while the defender runs off with it or hoofs it away.

I imagine it’s much the same in training. Except instead of thinking “hmm we’re never going to get consistency out of this lad” the coaches go “hmmm, our defenders are better than most of the others we meet, perhaps he’ll be more successful in a real game” and they chuck him on for a few minutes hoping his success % rises to the point where he does score or lay on a goal.

    Except it doesn’t.

I like him, he brings genune entertainment in a time where it’s sadly lacking in the game. He’s not a player I would have on the pitch where the result wasn’t more or less assured.

While price isn’t always a signifier of the true value of a player, it’s still worth remembering how incredibly cheap he was.

If it’s P McCourt you’re talking about, it’s not his running about fitness that has been his issue. It’s his core strength that’s the problem and this causes issues with him picking up niggling injuries (probably in his back and lower abdominals/groin, I would think).

It’s fitness to play ie when a player has a broken leg and they say he’s not fit.

    Published on Tuesday 7 August 2012 13:16

This follows confirmation from the SFL at the weekend that the game will be shown live on ESPN TV.

The game will be all-ticket and the capacity for the match has been set at 4,140.

No tickets will be sold by phone or by credit card.

  25. Cheers celtic40me. That will hopefully be the plan, but someone else mentioned when they came out the olympic stadium they were all directed towards west ham underground…so was wondering if anyone else had any other back-up routes! We have around 90mins to get back once the athletics finishes, so hopefully that will be plenty even although 80,000 will be heading for exits and probably the same trains all at the same time!

  26. Classic statement from Phil( i know) re mccourt

    Who would buy him?

It is not just NL who doesnt pick him TM and GS didnt pick him either He isnt a team player look at Saturday Got ball 4 times lost ball twice ( once near end when Adeen almist equalised) passed to us once and misplaced once

On saturday Murphy ran past him to chase guy down line when ball was out paddy still wasnt in position

I think he has great skill but like Andy Ritchie or Lee trundle he is almost a novelty player who every now and then does something special

He is now stopping our kids from getting valuable game time and i think NL feels he owes to supporters to get him on for last 10/15 mins Let him leave and lets see if the kids are good enough

“I am going on Thursday night…any tips appreciated. Also, we need to get back to London St Pancras after the event…any tips appreciated on the best way to do it!”

Hi Celticbhoy. I was in the Olympic Park for the hockey on Friday night, very busy but no difficulty getting in through Stratford tube station and then the security check. NOTE they don’t let you take any water in so take an empty plastic bottle as there are water stations to fill up. You can buy beer (£4 for a 330ml bottle of Heineken), soft drinks food etc but will need to q. You can take food in but your bag needs to fit under a seat. A small daysack is fine! Go early and have a good look around the site, it is very impressive.

You would have received a tube day travelcard for Thursday with your tickets so you can use this on the Olympic Javelin train from/to St Pancras. (7 mins but a much longer wait to get on). Have a look at the Olympic Javelin train website. Alternative is Central Line from Stratford to Liverpool St and change on to to Circle or Metropolitan Line to Kings Cross/St Pancras.

    Have a great time.
