The need to put a stake in the CL ground

152

Yesterday, we were an outlier; having a player harshly red carded by a VAR, then losing five goals away from home in Europe.  This morning, not so much.  Manchester United only lost the four goals when they went down to 10 men, but they were playing Copenhagen.  A truckload of compensatory sentiment accommodated Erik ten Hag as he explained his team’s defeat last night.

Copenhagen’s win was only the fourth in this season’s Champions League from a team outside of the top 5 leagues against a team from that monied group (Feyenoord, Galatasaray and Shakhtar have each won once), nothing from Portugal, Switzerland, Austria or Scotland.  The chasm between the haves and have nots is larger than ever.

This stat is unlikely to change in Rome later this month, for Celtic, a win on Match Day Six is important.  We need a stake in the ground in this tournament for next season.  Beat Feyenoord, learn quickly and move on.

    As much as we love the Champions league, it is not the same competition anymore. Why call it the champions league when for years champions of various leagues had to go through multiple qualifying rounds, whereas the teams that finished 2nd or 3rd in the so-called bigger leagues get automatic qualification. I would be happier in the Europa league where we can actually try and build our reputation back up a wee bit. Winning any European competition is great. I think we would have been over the moon if we had done what West Ham did last year and win the Conference league. I was lucky as a kid to go to some spectacular European games, Real Madrid, Sporting Lisbon comeback, Nottingham Forest, Rapid Vienna fiasco to name a few. We are fuel, in a negative way right now for all those so-called pundits to show that we are not good enough, and don’t deserve to be in there with the big boys.

    Sorry for the all over the place post, just my thoughts.

    RAIL SEATING SECTION UPDATE

    We are writing to you with an update regarding the Rail Seating Section at Celtic Park.

    You may already be aware of recent communications from the Club to each of the ‘Green Brigade’, Season Ticket holders who have registered with the Ticket Office as being part of the ‘Green Brigade’ supporters’ club, and to all Season Ticket holders located within the Rail Seating Section.

    For clarity, the Club’s email to the Rail Seating Section is included at the bottom of this email. In short, as a result of the accumulation of unacceptable behaviours, the lack of compliance with the Ground Regulations, the Rail Seating Safety Code of Conduct and requests by the Club, it is not considered possible at the moment to manage safety within Celtic Park with ‘Green Brigade’ members in the stadium. It was therefore necessary to suspend the Season Tickets of all Season Ticket holders who have registered with the Ticket Office as being part of the ‘Green Brigade’ supporters’ club. This is currently 267 people in total, all of whom have been contacted directly by the Club to explain the consequences of such registration, including the potential for action against all group members in line with the Season Ticket terms and conditions.

    The Club’s emails outlined actions that the Club has taken in respect of the ‘Green Brigade’ amid the Club’s ongoing review of unacceptable conduct concerning the group. These progressive steps, including removal of non-matchday access at Celtic Park, removal of matchday access at Celtic Park and suspension of access to away tickets, have culminated in the suspension of Season Tickets detailed above.

    Ahead of Sunday’s match versus Aberdeen at Celtic Park, the Club wishes to provide our Season Ticket holders with a clear and accurate update on the rationale behind the steps taken by the Club and the current status of the process.

    As the Club has already stated and the group and its members are well aware, the steps taken and suspensions made have categorically not been imposed as a result of the display of Palestinian flags. The Club has explained to the group in writing the specific reasons behind each of the progressive actions taken in relation to the group. These are based on very real safety concerns resulting from the behaviour of the group. Many of the behaviours have been going on for a considerable period of time, have resulted in previous actions in relation to the group, and are very well known to the group.

    The Club has evidence of these behaviours. These behaviours have been set out most recently in writing to the group on 14 September, 4 October, 20 October, 23 October and 31 October and follow on from similar issues being formally discussed and action being taken by the Club against the group last season. No response has been received by the Club from the group to these emails.

    The Club is therefore disappointed with the attempts by the group not only to downplay the safety related behaviours, some of which the group has now publicly admitted, but also to conflate the reasoning behind the actions taken by the Club with the use by supporters of Palestinian flags. That is particularly so, when there is evidence of the group using banners and flags relating to or connected with terrorist organisations involved in the conflict in the Middle East.

    The Club wishes to highlight the following:

    267 people who have registered themselves with the Ticket Office as being part of the ‘Green Brigade’ supporters’ club (and were made aware of the potential consequences of this registration) are currently suspended for safety reasons;

    The Club is working through a number of requests from amongst that 267 who no longer wish to be registered with the group and will continue to liaise directly with these individuals;

    The Club is also working through other communications received across the Club relating to the matter and, following screening, will respond where deemed appropriate;

    Subject to specific action taken against any individuals found to be directly involved in serious instances of unacceptable conduct, the Club will offer and process refunds for any match or matches missed due to this suspension;

    The third instalment of the UEFA Champions League package was taken by the Club in line with the relevant terms and conditions, however, refunds will also be available for this match for any supporter who remains suspended for that match;

    In respect of Tuesday night’s match versus Atletico Madrid, no tickets were ever issued to or charged to any Season Ticket holder registered with the group;

    The Club is willing to cancel the Season Ticket and process pro-rata refunds for any Season Ticket holder currently suspended should that individual so wish. Similarly, the Club is willing to discuss the possible relocation of any such individual out of the Rail Seating Section upon request; and

    Whilst efforts are ongoing to resolve the current situation, and on a match by match basis for any seat subject to the suspension, the Club plan to offer tickets free of charge to recipients who may otherwise be unable to attend Celtic Park.

    The Club considers that this approach is proportionate and reasonable while working through this important safety matter and is happy to discuss any aspect of the ongoing issues with supporters or supporter groups.

    Finally, as we have repeatedly communicated to representatives of the ‘Green Brigade’, the Club remains open to communication and engagement on the wider matter with a view to returning to a situation where rules and regulations around operating safely are respected and complied with.

    Should you wish to contact the Club on this or any other matter related to the Rail Seating Section, we would ask that you direct your correspondence in the first instance to railseating@celticfc.co.uk.

  11. What is the point of us going into the CL?

    The only rationale for it is the money we get by being ship in that league guarantees a good spfl squad; a squad that will be better than many minnows in a tiny league.

    Could we not go straight into the EL and earn a couple of million from a decent run?

    We are a piece of dirt on the moneyed club’s shoe; a scheduled testimonial borrocks fest from Sky.

    We have had some periods of fabulous play this season in the CL and are still fuggin ship compared to every other fuggin club; every f other club is miles ahead of us. We have 1 f point in a dream group.

    I think we have played some good stuff at times as well, but when you look at some of the players that come on as subs for the other teams compared to ours, it is night and day. We obviously recruit players capable of helping us win the Scottish league, but we don’t ,whether it is a combination of money or lack of ambition ( by ourselves or the player we are trying to recruit) attract a ready made finished product. I hate to say it but thems across the city have been in 2 European finals in the last 15 years, whether it was with a zombified EBT team, but they have done very well and are in a group that they should get through to after Christmas.

    I agree with what JackieMac said about the money, but what is the point of accumulating that money if our reputation in that competition is in tatters every year. I am not berating our team, I love and will always support whomever is wearing the hoops, even back to the wayne Biggins and Raphael Scheidt (who I have a signed Brazil club jersey from))))))) I just feel that when the idea of that Super league competition came around, I was a wee bit excited that we might have a fairer European competition without all the moneybags teams in it.

    Sean

  17. If we played in a decent level league week in week out then we could have competed better.

    Asking our team to step up to CL level vs top 5 leagues is not easy. The exceptional results of Copenhagen v Man U and Shakhtar v Barca and Feyenoord v Lazio show it can be done but 95% of the results show it won’t happen often.

    Only ourselves and PSV have even taken points from teams from the top 5 ranked leagues at the start of the campaign.

    Better recruiting with no specification as to what that means ain’t fixing the problem. No matter haw much people need a bogey man.

    The fundamentals ain’t in our favour.

  18. Honestly …those Fud’s on Celtic news now have a headline with that reptile Fat Sally “ defending “ Celtic in the champions league ….aye right 🤔

    i look forward to the plc flying the palestinian flag up one of the poles above the north stand.

    i am sure i have seen the basque one often.

  20. Manchester United have the most expensively assembled squad in the Premier League, with the players at Erik ten Hag’s disposal having been bought for close to £1billion.

    Not only do the Red Devils boast English football’s highest wage bill, but they’ve also spent more than any other club in transfer fees in building their current squad.

    The club’s struggles – having lost five of their opening 10 fixtures for the first time in the Premier League era – brings into sharp focus how wisely they’ve spent all that money.
