There is a team in this squad but defending for buttons

895

Of all the football nonsense, I hate scapegoating most.  So Ryan, I’m sorry, but what on earth were you doing?  We were 0-2 ahead and had created several other very good chances.  Milan were nowhere, they had not mustered a cohesive attack. That foul was conceded in the perfect spot for a free kick taker; you could read the script on how momentum would switch the moment it was awarded.

Attackers are primarily there to exploit opponents weaknesses, Tom Rogic, Odsonne Edouard and Ryan Christie combined to do this and put Celtic two ahead in the San Siro.  Tom came close on another occasion, Callum McGregor had a gilt-edged chance and having got himself into the perfect position, Jeremie Frimpong froze with Milan at his mercy.  We could have been out of sight.

There is a team in this squad.  The formation looked right.  Frimpong seemed liberated from his normal wide anchor, Rogic worried defenders before tiring; in particular, I was impressed by the way the ball was accurately bulleted across the field.

Oh, and we cannot defend for buttons.  I was chastised by a 16-year-old after the game for talking up the relative merits of this performance compared to Ross County.  Apparently there is a rulebook for defending two goal leads away to tier one teams, you defend like Ross County and close the game out.  But we don’t know how to defend like Ross County.  Imagine that!

What I will say is, they fought for their manager last night, Commando Christie in particular.

AKBW1888- he’s the type we should be looking at HH

Yeah Ralf Rangnick is the Man !!Bada Bing!!

  2. TIMALOY29 on 4TH DECEMBER 2020 1:33 PM

We’ve obviously given up completely on Soro.

Connell and Henderson also seem to have failed to make the grade.

Jackson Irvine for me is a no-brainer even if it’s as a stop-gap. In there next to McGregor to do the simple jobs that Brown can no longer achieve.

    ______

Further to this point, why don’t Celtic ever sign free agents? Nobody in the first-team squad was signed as one. Why is that? Do we turn up our noses when somebody has ended up in that position?

This summer the zombies went out and picked up Defoe, McLaughlin and Balogun on free transfers.

The season before they picked up Davis and Aribo.

The season before that they picked up McGregor and Arfield.

They don’t always work out but I feel as if Celtic have become stuck in their ways when it comes to recruitment. Too busy with the buy low sell high ethos.

In reality, you also need to be nimble in the market. Take advantage of unglamorous but experienced signings. We could have signed David Marshall and reinvested the Barkas money elsewhere. Perhaps on a fulltime LB.

    Try different approaches.

The Norwegian player who scored against Celtic both legs was signed by Milan after he played a blinder against them for his Norwegian club. Why do we never have any interest in these players who show us up in Europe?

The huns signed Barasic after he played against them.

  3. Did Tavernier get a penalty when Big Jimmy was carded?

Did the shop take back the size 40 jeans?

  4. Bring in Ralf Rangnick & his backroom staff, with no interference from PL & The Board,

as regards to Players Recruitment, players off-loading, etc-etc, & we would move forward

as a Club, in Vroom-Vroom Mode.

  5. Big Jimmy.

Great to see you back on, justice has been done.

Looking forward to meeting up one day, does your local serve a good espresso? :-)

    Eeeeek! Right … okay ….

I know. Most people get angry and calm down. I tend to move int he opposite direction. I’ve been biting my metaphorical lip for a while.

I’m going to defend Paul67 on the first of your points today.

Which is your right. It’s a shame Paul doesn’t deign to interact with us mortals anymore.

I myself refuse point blank to touch the subject with a 20 foot pole, although I have all the research done on what was intended to be a demolition piece on the high hopes of the Sevconites that this scandal might ultimately do to us what the taxman did to them.

Again, that’s a legitimate and fair concern. And many might opine that we’d deserve it more. Which is horrific as it is tragic. A club set up to defend and help the vulnerable became a tool to predate them. That said – I think that’s actually an unfair accusation on the part of Celtic.

To explain – we’re looking at this through a 2020 prism. At the time this was happening the general outlook was different. How? Firstly, it was a widely held view that being sexually abused might ‘taint’ the people abused – and that people would be viewed as different, or damaged. So it was hushed up. I also think that a number of extremely incompetent people thought this sort of thing could simply never happen. The people involved were too nice and kids were mischief making.

Latterly, and especially under Fergus McCann, all manner of very good programs and safeguards were put in place. For that alone, McCann should be lauded as a Celtic legend.

That’s not the issue though. The issue – like with the Loyalist and the troubles in Northern Ireland is the refusal to accept any culpability or to directly address the issue.

The article itself is finished and simply needs an edit and then “press publish”.

I understand why any Celtic blog would shy away from the subject. However – when the previous article on CQN was ‘There are some things more important than football’? Nah – If Paul67 wishes to weaponise goodwill and charity, then let’s absolutely air our personal ‘demon core’.

Points of law, comparisons with cases abroad, average pay out costs, burden of proof, what clubs in England have done … I examined the whole spectrum. I have it locked and loaded, but I long ago decided I will not publish it in spite of it being one of the best researched pieces I’ve ever done.

Personally – I’d love to see what you write about it. I also think that to single out Celtic in this regard would be wrong – Paedophiles seek out positions of authority and access to children. Religion, police, charity, fame, football clubs etc etc…. these people are calculating as they are disgusting. In that regard, it’s no surprise that Celtic found themselves infiltrated. They also won’t be the last to botch a clear up.

The corporate board using weasel words to deny any complicity is the issue.

Because this isn’t a game. Nothing in that article comes close to addressing the central issue; what is OUR RESPONSIBILITY as a club, as business and as an institution?

There are two side to this. The corporate and the moral. In my view, a club set up as we are should value the moral imperative far more highly than the corporate. Then again, we shouldn’t be surprised that the (then) owners of Castlebeck care home adopt this approach. In case you’re not aware – Castlebeck was a care home at the centre of an abuse scandal. It was owned by Dermot Desmond amongst others. They didn’t show any real contrition there either. And this is what fuels my fire.

The ‘owners’ of our club are unfit to pass though the front doors of the club. Walfrid will be spinning in his grave.

Three seperate issues by the way, three seperate strands … all conflated, yet all contradicting one another.

    I don’t think they contradict.

As a company, the responsibility is to the shareholders. Deny, deflect, demand that the accusers produce proof, admit nothing.

They must run the club in the best interests of the shareholders. That doesn’t mean to deny or deflect. The best interests of the club going forward is not to be toxic or an institution that advertisers or sponsors will very as a pariah. The cash hit on this isn’t anywhere near as much as we’ve squandered on junk players.

If I’m honest – I’d rather we do the right thing than have any number of highly paid footballers.

As a club, we have a responsibility to the wider game to assist in preventing this stuff in future and making sure that we have the highest possible standards of care and vetting etc.

In this regard, I think the club are in good standing. I think the club’s current safeguarding policies are amongst the best in the game.

As an institution, I wonder if none of them matters next to our moral obligations and doing what is right.

This should be our guiding principle.

This, by the way, is the closest I’ve EVER come to admitting any of that in a public sphere, although my friends and family members know exactly how I feel about it all, what I think of the club’s handling of it, the people I think are ultimately to blame for letting it happen and who I think ought to be in jail with the perpatrators.

We have nothing to fear from a frank discussion. Or from admitting previous failures. The lives have been ruined. What’s important is how we go forward. What do we want for our club? Money? Because it’s not what I view as special about Celtic. I’d love Celtic as much in div 3 as I do winning 10 in a row.

This should *not* be our dirty secret. It’s treating it thus that’s making it so toxic. People’s lives were ruined. We should do the right thing. We should always do the right thing. For example – we were the club to stand against sectarianism. At a time when it was morally acceptable to have a sectarian signing policy we stood against it. It cost Celtic money. But we stood against it. We went to the wire to keep the tricolour flying. These are historic high points in our clubs history. More so than Lisbon 67. It’s that *defines* us. That the current board can’t see that? It’s disgusting.

But you know what? It’s not a football story, and that’s what I write about. Paul67 has his own reasons for not wanting to cover the subject, and I have no problem with whatever they are … perhaps he feels, as I do, that this one is WAAAAAY too big and complex and multifaceted to go near … I don’t remotely have the qualifications to write properly on this subject, in spite of the work I did on the unpublished piece.

    Publish and be damned!

On a serious note – I understand your hesitancy, but I think this is all of our responsibility. Especially the people who publish articles like ‘There are more important things than football’. On that front I agree. And I was proud of CQN for publishing it, but on reflection? (and this is *your* fault!), it was just weaponising charity as a deflector shield (in my opinion). I’d genuinely welcome Paul67’s intersession here. And I’d never be happier than to be torn to bits by him for even thinking this.

Ultimately, it’s nothing something any of the blogs should be going near … this is bigger than football, it’s bigger than Celtic, it is a societal issue of mammoth proportions and significance way beyond what any of us should be getting into … it just doesn’t belong on a blog.

I disagree. On the subject of the club trying to hunker and slide away from this, this is absolutely the most important thing to hit our club. We should not be tainted by hiding from this. Our humanity and our clubs being part of the solution rather than part of the problem should be something we should be proud of.

The abuse has happened. What defines us is how we handle this. If we view it as a liability issue? We’re just a faceless corporate. We’re just another Castlebeck. That is NOT Celtic. It’s not my Celtic. It should NOT be your Celtic.

It’s way above my metaphorical pay grade, and Paul’s, which is to say nothing for the familes and for the legal cases which are ongoing … it’s way bigger than anything we should be blogging about.

    It’s not. You’re human. It’s a human issue.

The huns are delighted this is happening. They’re celebrating child abuse. And our club are on the same branch, except they’re playing hide and seek and hoping it goes away. We’re better than that. Or at least we should be.

I have my own feelings on how it will affect the reputations and legacies of some of those at the club right now; I suspect it will damn them in ways other stuff won’t, ways that matter more than results or financial statements or whether or not we win the ten.

People make mistakes. The people who should have noticed and didn’t, in the main didn’t do so out of malice. And those people should be viewed with compassion. Would *you* like to be the guy that gave Torbett his second stint at Celtic? Have no doubt, this tragedy affects those people too. The vast majority of people in this tale are victims.

More often than not, legacies should remain intact and we should remind ourselves that human being are subject to frailties.

But I am not going to criticise Paul for not editorialising on it, none of us should.

When articles like ‘some things are more important than football’ appear? Some might suggest it’s a moral imperative.

I know there are guys on here who feel differently, as you do … the whole thing makes me uncomfortable, and not because of the impact on the club it might or might not have. It’s just … I want to shower every time I talk about it. I certainly don’t want to write about it beyond what I already have.

I think that’s fair enough. But like I say ‘some things are more important than football’.

    /p
