This guy was the real deal

I had to smile at Simon Donnelly’s comparison of Henrik Larsson to Kenny Dalglish. Until Henrik came along, The New Dalglish was the reference point for any great prospect. And a few not-so-great ones.

Simon himself was one prominent recipient of this title. Back in 1994 Lou Macari’s Celtic were as bad as we’d been since the 50s when the teenage Donnelly burst onto the scene with five goals in the final 12 league games of the season. He was famously hailed as the new Dalglish, a comparison which was shown to be absurd during the barren season which followed.

When Henrik pitched up in Glasgow in 1997 all those comparisons must have crystallised for Simon. This guy was the real deal.

Although some starts shone brighter than others, both of them played their part in the historic title win in 1998. Celtic fans will never know a time like that again. When Simon, Henrik and friends gather for the Foundation game in May, more than a few of us will recall that titanic season.

On the subject of memorable league title wins…….

The crowd at Ibrox that day was only 35,000, suggesting they still didn’t think they’d win the league even with a victory.

We had to achieve a post-war points record, 63, to win it that year, and, as TOSB says, our only defeat was 0-1 to them, the other match being 2-2 at Celtic Park.

We were delighted when 117 of you very kindly supported and participated in Goals For Shay. Most of the feedback was positive and we’ve only made 1 small change to our forthcoming competition – a separate prize for the entrant who scores best when just looking at the final 3 weeks. We hope this will keep everyone even more interested right to the end of the competition. And there might even be a ‘Cup Final Day play off’ too. So how could you possibly want to miss out??

Still time to enter – we’re accepting entries up until 11:59:59 (that’s am!) on Saturday 1st April. No joke!

****Goals For Shay 2 – your invitation!****

Welcome to the launch of our brand new competition, “Goals For Shay 2” which will commence on Friday 31 March (although we’re accepting all entries sent before noon on Saturday 1st April).

Same rules as the original Goals For Shay except that this time the top prize will be roughly 90% of the total prizepot. There’ll be a separate prize of the oterh 10%-ish which will go to the entrant who does best over the final 3 rounds. So everyone should get a good run for their money.

The cost of entry is the same as before, £10 and an additional £5 if you want a 2nd joker. The prizepot will consist of 50% of the entry free. The other 50% plus all of the 2nd joker monies go to support Walk With Shay,

So, if interested just drop the briefest of emails to cqnpredictor@gmail.com . remember to tell us your monike / nickname. And we should get back to you within 24 hours with the full rules, details of how to pay and the all important first fixtures.

Please feel free to pass this email on, tell your family and friends, share on Facebook, involve your work colleagues, etc. We are a competition Open to All. A few folk are thinking of organising their own wee ‘competition within a competition’ to see who is best out of their own circle of friends.

Thank you for Walking With Shay

  3. In the last league title before the 9-in-a-row, 1953-54, the title was also clinched away from home, at Easter Road, as was the first one after the 9, in season ’76-77, at the same venue.

So the 4-2 game was the first title clinched at Celtic Park since ??

  4. Oops, meant to say we already have 105 in the ole GFS2 clique but loads and loads of room left… ;-)
