Tommy Gemmell: “They’re all great goals”

Tommy Jinky Dukla

The first time I met Tommy Gemmell was back in the 90s. I made a comment that some recent goal was “a great goal”. Tommy replied, “Every goal is a great goal.

“It didn’t matter who I scored against or how inconsequential the goal was, every time I put the ball in the net was a great moment.”

Tommy couldn’t hide the joy he got from doing what he did.

Some tremendous photos surfaced online yesterday, including this one (above), taken 49 years and 11 months ago, a moment after Celtic’s 0-0 draw away to Dukla Prague in the second leg of the European Cup semi-final, a result that saw Celtic progress to the final 3-1 on aggregate.

This photo took pride of place on Tommy’s memento wall at his Dunblane home. It was framed but had clearly fallen, as there was a crack in the glass. But still, its prominence outranked images from Lisbon.

For Tommy, this image captured some of the things he treasured most. His face displays sheer joy; the team have already achieved more than any other British side in reaching the final of the Continent’s top tournament.

He’s carrying his great pal, Jimmy Johnstone, like a child, on his hip. It defines their achievement, friendship and an unfettered happiness.  If you ever had a photo like this of yourself, it would be on your wall too.

I’m pleased our next game is at Celtic Park. Many of us want to be there.

He probably ought to have been sent off for catching Accies’ Dougie Imrie with a swipe of his boot so clumsy it sparked recollections of Father Ted kicking Bishop Brennan up the backside.

  10. Morning all, hopefully we will progress today in the cup. God willing we will get through and spank the Mankies in the semi final.

The thought of that lit being assisted in the final to stop a treble is way too painful and possible.

So, today I will be attending half nine mass, bit of cardio stuff at the gym, couple of hours of spreadsheet boredom after the Hoops game and then cook some dinner.

    Same old, same old…

  11. Looking forward to today’s games where I expect we will see a few changes in personnel but the style will remain the same.

Giffiths to start – Dembele has had a niggling injury that I would rather ensure is not aggravated prior to the derby game.

Eboue to start – perhaps Broonie getting a rest.

Izzy to start – Kieran so absolutely brilliant but like Moussa the rest would do him good

Perhaps a goalie change and a different back two pairing – though I’d rather keep the current two ticking over

  12. Good morning friends from a pretty bright looking though damp underfoot East Kilbride. And its Matchday and another chance to go and see The Champions play, yee-ha!!!

I would prefer to know what you are having and how it’s cooked :-)

  15. I hope we make a few changes today, give the full backs , Moussa, Lovely Locks and Nir a day off. Put the game to bed by half time and we can allow Broonie and SS a rest also.

Anyone else think I have gone too far?

  16. GFTB

Apologies, looking like fajitas today. I have a good few veggie bits left from yesterday and enough spice and herbs to make a decent salsa. Bit of chicken and some sour cream will be needed but that looks the best option at the moment.

    That sound okay?

No PV this morning as need to take mini to Celtic park after church this morning

  18. The refereeing at Ibrox yesterday was beyond a joke. When you see decisions like that – particularly Garner’s assault – I honestly wonder how any fans can question that there is a problem of bias in the SFA.

Incidentally, I believe this was the same ref that allowed Moshni (remember him?) to barge the goalkeeper into the net, whilst the keeper had the ball in his hands, in a previous cup tie.

That’s the detail I was after, we have chapel at 10am, church at 11.30am then the Georgian Hotel for a spot of lunch and maybe watch some of the football as no Sky in this house……

I am more of an eater than a cook but I appreciate all chefs :-)

The refereeing at Ibrox yesterday was beyond a joke.

There’s the reason we have won only three trebles in our history.

Keep yir eye on the MIB bassa next week as they’re not finished with us yet.

  22. Macjay@5:35am

And in the ‘Evening Shark Jump’, Ms McConnell demonstrates that own goals aren’t just scored on the pitch.. . . . .

“Ronny Deila’s side were denied that feat in the Norwegian’s first season at Celtic because of a clanger of a referring mistake at Hampden – something that Rodgers has watched back.”

Oops, ye made a bells-up of that, Alison! See how Brendan watches back, maybe you should read back.

  23. Italiabhoy CheatinBeatons performance yesterday was up there with Grandmaster Dallas and the sinister minister. Sod any pretence of fairness when the FoD need to win.

    Noticed that myself , Beat.

Brendan appears to have made a point of learning from past refereeing ” mistakes ” with a view to preparing for the next one.
