Travel bans and Uefa forfeit

208

Uefa’s decision yesterday, that if a club cannot visit to play a Champions or Europa League qualification game due to travel restrictions, if must forfeit the tie, will force some harsh planning on Celtic.

Travellers from a specific nation could be prohibited from entering Scotland, while Celtic players could be quarantined if they travel to that country.  In this event, Celtic would probably have to base their European squad in a (relatively) safe European country until the ban was lifted or quarantine restrictions expire, or withdraw from the European competition.  Neither prospect is appealing.

The problem does not expire after the qualifiers; governments will remain edgy about spikes as they arise for months to come.

The consequences of the crisis for season 2019-20 were almost impossible to imagine as recently as February.  It feels optimistic that plans for season 2020-21 will go without a hitch.  Contingency plans should note we may need a larger than normal squad.  All rivalries aside, this is one season where it would be useful to have our domestic competitors involved in European football as often as we are.

    How the draw will work

The balls containing the names of the seeded teams will be placed in one bowl and the balls containing the names of the unseeded will be put into another bowl. One ball will be taken from each bowl and placed in a large empty bowl in the middle, where they will be shuffled. The first team drawn will play the tie at home.

This season all qualifying ties will be single-leg matches behind closed doors.

    What happens next?

Ties take place on 18 or 19 August, with extra time and a penalty shoot-out if required. Winners advance to the UEFA Champions League second qualifying round; all losing sides progress to the UEFA Europa League second qualifying round.

I see Delboy and Rodney are having some distribution and quality issues with the new Sevco strips, perhaps they should enlist some help from Trigger & Boycy. Either that or stick to flogging the Russian dolls.!

Where’s big Mike when you need him. Oh wait a minute……

  6. I’d love to sign him. He will probably go to Germany and play for Bayern Munich 2 in the German 3rd tier.

why then would we want to sign him , he wanted first team football left hearts youth to join our academy then returned to hearts because he wanted to play first team and you are now saying he will go to Germany and play 3rd tier football , strange.

also he is too small slightly built and has fitness issue that why he is not for us.

  7. I thought I read somewhere that the Scottish government had agreed a protocol with football authorities as regards clubs returning from away games in Europe. Is that not the case?

We still don’t have a cure for common cold nor ‘flu. We may just have to live with this as we do with the others…

How many great players have been rejected for that reason?

Andy Robertson was told he was too small, by Chris McCart….I wonder what happened to him?

  12. Gents,

It is nor feasible to lock down continually. The benifits will not outweigh the negatives; Both in terms of health and the economy.

What if we get a credible vaccine and many refuse to take it. ? Do we then rely on the crucial 60% number for immunity.?

Gene : Possibly we should ask Dominic Cummings if Russia has a vaccine.

There are certain questions and contingencies that have to be discussed. Some may be unpalatable.

It was almost universally accepted on here that opening pubs was both stupid and dangerous.

The Aberdeen pub situation proves that.

There was significant disagreement about the safety of partially reopening stadia.

The Aberdeen pub situation provides no new facts to support either view?

  15. I agree that we need to plan for all eventuallities, regarding squad . With going for players like , Hickey, McCarthy and Fletcher. But what about centre of defence.

Why was Simunivic let go with no replacement lined up

  16. Fairly obvious after yesterday that the huns have no intention of breaking even anytime soon. Their directors will continue to underwrite their losses.

I’m confident we’ll get players in that Lenny wants, goalkeeper was a priority, we’ve got some time now to improve the defence before pivotal games in September.

  17. That mine of information,Andy Walker, has told Newcastle fans “Newcastle should sign Oddsonne Edouarde,he is much better than Joelinton”

    Yes,that Joelinton.

They are only seeded in the 1st round of UEFA qualifiers. If they go out in any of the following 3 games, worse than carnage.
