Uefa-Res 12, Craig Thomson, take a look at yourself

1052

The document from Uefa to the Resolution 12 team, which emerged online over the weekend, is genuine. The headline part of this correspondence was always going to be Uefa confirming that whatever errors or omissions on the part of Old Rangers and the SFA’s Uefa vetting process, no further action was possible as New Rangers are a “new club/new company”.

Priceless, I know, but a delightful wee surprise, though it was, the status of Newco Rangers wasn’t the purpose of Resolution 12. Res 12 was about SFA process and accountability.

There was a great deal of correspondence with media figures since the letter was produced. It’s probably worthwhile noting the chronology of correspondence:

Uefa wrote to the Res 12 team on 6 June, copying the SFA and Celtic. After this date Grant Russell at STV asked Uefa for an update and received pretty much the same information that was sent to the Res 12 guys, without the supporting “new club/new company” line.

You may be of the view that after receiving the 6 June letter, the SFA could have asked Uefa not to offer such information in future (the layers of this story are endless). We’ll never know, but the horse had already bolted.

As correspondence on Res 12 continues, the team decided not to attempt private conversations with Uefa while making correspondence public, which is why this leak didn’t come from the Res 12 team. But I’m glad it’s out. It’s the definitive and irrefutable reference point on the status of Newco Rangers, and it’s on Uefa headed notepaper.

I don’t expect I’ll be goaded about Res 12 online as often going forward.

While we’re on the subject of the SFA: Craig Thomson, take a look at yourself. You know this is not good enough.  Your decision-making this season has been atrocious. James Forrest booking, for staying several yards away from the crowd after scoring a goal, was ludicrous, capping a multitude of errors this month.

If only people at the SFA were accountable. Which brings us back to the point above.

Getting nervous about tomorrow.  So much on the line……

Rangers aren’t banned from Europe, nor were they ever. The new club was ineligible to play for the first 3 seasons of their existence. They are now eligible, but just no’ good enough!

I wonder what the odds are on a Celtic red card against the Dons?

    Am I paranoid?

Or mibbe I’m guessing how the system might work this season.

  4. Clogher – it appears, looking at the shenanigans at UEFA, FIFA, the IOC, Qatar etc etc etc that sport is corrupt in every quarter. Celtic face that general corruption and then the discrimination against us in Scotland on top of that.

It doesn’t make me hopeful of a satisfactory resolution.

Greed has ruined sport. Bigotry has put the boot in on top of that.

Re getting a bigger share of TV money pie (Asia etc.), I can never understand why TV cameras are pointed at a half empty stand. Surely, it’s possible to make sure that the stand opposite the TV gantry is filled first. The sound was great at Saturdays game but what you saw most was the half empty stand opposite the cameras. Seems this year in Spain clubs who don’t address this will be fined.

  8. I am impressed by the amount of money being raised for too important Palestinian charities. Well done everybody.

    However…..

I am far from impressed with how the GB have gone about this. I think they could have had a bigger win had they thought this through. A bigger win that did not include putting Celtic at risk. Something that they had no right to do.

An alternate approach might have gone something like this…..

    Heritage:

UEFA have an odd view of the world. They think it is ok for Ajax to wave the Israeli flag on account of Ajax having a Jewish heritage. Strange and dangerous logic, in my view, but be that as it may.

UEFA seemingly are ok with Celtic fans flying the Irish flag on account of our Irish Heritage. Fair enough.

But the GB could have started out by talking about an equally important (though very much related) aspect of our Heritage: Charity. Having established that, and made sure it was broadly accepted, they could have announced that, at the Hapoel game, their would be a collected for Palestinian charities. Tough to argue with the humanitarian efforts of the fans of a Club whose history and heritage is steeped in helping the displaced, disaffected and in-danger populations.

    Charity:

Thus, all of the flags on display last Wednesday would have been in support of Humanitarian efforts. I suspect that it would have been very difficult for UEFA to lay charges on Celtic FC under these circumstances. As such, the ‘political expression’, is a ‘Charitable expression’.

    Embarrassing corporate football:

And on to what appears to be an objective of the GB, sticking it to ‘the man’. In the lead up to last Wednesday’s game, with a backdrop of a charitable heritage, and a well publicized collection in aid of these two charities….the GB could have asked – publicly – that Celtic FC match the amount collected. I doubt that this would have been a problem for Celtic FC.

AND….asked – very publicly – that UEFA also match that amount.

Sure, they could have turned us down. Wouldn’t have looked good, given that such rejection would have become public instantly.

But I doubt very much that they would have taken steps to punish Celtic FC.

Much of the above is just the same ingredients of the story we now have. Just arranged in a different order, and aimed at objectives that virtually all Celtic supporters could get behind. And that Celtic FC would get behind. And that would box UEFA into an interesting corner.

Better planning around clear and commonly held objectives.

    Just my 2 cents….

    Ronnie

Banged on about that a few times. We just get it so wrong at times – Hibs were guilty of that in a couple of their play-off ties, fans in the one corner and top tier and it looked like there was no one there! Killie bad for it as well, putting fans in the back of the section where no one can see them. Madness.

Aye, I know that. The STV article said they were banned. Complete guff. I was hoping the author might be lurking and could maybe put up a link to the UEFA website explaining about the “ban” he claimed they had.

I did a search just to see if he might have came across something which could have – ahem – “confused” him!

Not sure if its a new tactic but potentially costly going forward for other clubs. Badly managed situation on the part of the police and St Johnstone, who it transpired don’t even have a database of their own supporters details.

Whilst the UEFA letter was pleasing, was res12 not supposed to be about exposing the SFA? Are we now satisfied the SFA acted appropriately? Or are we snatching victory from the jaws of defeat with the letter being used as a compromise?

  21. Robertressell,

I agree much of the Olympics were tarnished by all sorts of corruption at all levels.

Given the fantasy world of soccer, with the added stain of sectarian bigotry in Scotland, it is simply impossible to take anything we are told without suspicion.

The MSM and all traditional forms of mass communication are a mess.

The issue was they couldn’t sell to anyone, even their own ST holders who may have wished to buy extra – the way Celtic give priority to ST holders to buy extra tickets ahead of a general sale etc

  27. I have not been on much recently so apologies if this has been posted before:

Stiliyan Petrov’s dream comeback from leukaemia to professional football has come to an end, with the former Aston Villa admitting defeat in his attempt to play again at the highest level.

Petrov made a return to the Villa first team in pre-season, four years after being forced into retirement by his diagnosis.

But the comeback has proved short-lived, with Petrov conceding that it had not gone to plan and he would not play professionally again, as Villa declined to hand him a new contract.
