VAR will impact Celtic more than any club in world football

247

If there is any club in world football that will benefit from the introduction of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology, it is Celtic – in my opinion.  Other opinions are possible.  Refereeing is wide open to interpretation by fallible officials and is seldom consistent.

In my football supporting life, countless shoves in the box have been viewed as a penalty, or not.  The 2005 penalty at Tynecastle, when Rangers needed a late goal, springs to mind as quickly as the offside goal Newco ‘scored’ at Hampden on Sunday.  Then there’s the 1993 Douglas Hope decision, to allow Rangers to take kick off while 8 Celtic players were celebrating a goal in front of the Jungle.  Technically not a VAR issue, but a demonstration of what can happen without appropriate supervision.

VAR does not remove mistakes, honest or otherwise, however, it will make them significantly less likely.  When it is introduced to the Scottish Premiership in December, it will change the way we celebrate goals.  At the moment, I often glance at the linesman as a goal celebration starts, to check his flag is pointing in the right direction.  Only then can there be certainty.  From December, we will need to wait, often for several minutes, to find out if a goal has actually been scored.

The biggest impact of VAR will be as a deterrent.  Defenders will learn to stop grabbing shirts inside the box, off the ball incidents should quickly dry up, talent should be allowed to flourish.  Teams that learn this quickly will be first to benefit.

Yesterday’s decision feels momentous for the future of the game in Scotland.

    CONEYBHOY,

You don’t need a midfield clugger if you pass and move properly…

    ____

You shouldn’t need one if you have fair refereeing.

We’ll prove it a week on Sunday.

    —-

Scott Brown was much more than a “midfield clugger” – the guy could play a bit. He was always available to take the ball, even under pressure, from the back four and start the transition – something that Paul’s article says didn’t happen on Sunday…..plus of course he could ‘put his foot/body in when needed. We have no one like that right now and so a key component is missing, in my opinion.

Hatate can’t do it, Rogic can’t do it, Turnbull can’t do it, O’Riley can’t do it – these players have undoubted skills but need a fulcrum like Broonie to flourish. A Scott Brown from 2/3 years ago would be a Godsend to Ange.

  2. Will the VAR Mason in the Video room will use the tool fairly?

ONe aspect of VAR which does not get much discussion, is the instances where the TV commentator informs us that there is review on going whilst the game continues … sometimes without anyone on the pitch claiming for anything.

These usually result in an update which tells us that the review is complete and there has been no offence….

    ….jump forward to December …

…a team are in the ascendancy in a game , excepting relentless pressure, a goal is coming.

The referee is then informed that an offence may have occurred that he should review on the pitch side monitor.

Regardless of his decision , even if he decides no penalty, or red card needs awarded, the play has stopped for 2 or 3 minutes. The team that were under the cosh, have used the break in play to regroup, sort themselves out and are ready to restart.

Q : How many times do you think this type of intervention will be used to relieve pressure when the team in the ascendancy is Celtic?

Q : How many times do you think this intervention will be used to relieve pressure when the team in the ascendancy is Sevco?

There are many subtle ways VAR can be used to give slight advantages or disadvantages.

The MIB just need to ensure they have the right men in position.

    I still have grave concerns.

Thanks BB, didn’t realise that. I should have, we had to cancel a load of contracts in my work – costing us a fortune

  4. Paul’s correct to say we stand to benefit from VAR more than any other club. Sunday proved once again that CFC operate in a peculiar country were the two horse race has one horse handicapped. Off the top of my head this season, Roofe equaliser v Hibs was a yard offside, Sakala v Motherwell even worse. How many retrospective Reds has Morelos received last 3 years? Elbows to the face, stamps and off the ball kicks. VAR would surely have flagged these up and to the detriment of Old Firm. Remember, OF went two years without a sending off and a full season without conceding a penalty. If I looked back 30 years I’d still be writing this post tomorrow.

Yes, there will be the odd shenanigans from Lanarkshire Ref Ass.but in general VAR will eat into the would-be stolen points gained by one club, which benefits the handicapped one. The cheating will be hampered at the very least.

  5. Madden and Beaton are future var officials in waiting.

    Paul67, I don’t share your optimism.

    That is a shattering read.

I have many relatives in Liverpool. My cousin’s daughter lost her partner at Hillsborough. His grave today is still festooned with red and white scarves and flags. His brother was with him and survived but passed away about 10 or 12 years ago. He was a broken man..

Indeed Tom,that 97 figure will grow sadly.

The injustice will be compounded with each death.

The fight for justice seeps into history,

Curse the conservatives and their right wing murdoch.

The state caused death, the state and its vessels in meeja are all guilty of obfuscation and coverup

The fundamental concept of VAR is to help referees with their decision making.

    Paul67, I don’t share your optimism.

    ——

Surely with so much outcry, any change would be better? Reconsidered decisions are there graphically for all to see, just like the replays we get on TV – any blatant cheating would be there for all to see.

We will need to take the good with the bad, like happens down south. Lineker & Shearer have highlighted major VAR errors and these were addressed by the authorities. We can benefit from the VAR experience in England.

If VAR had been in operation at the moment in Scotland, of course a couple of issues from Sunday would have been addressed…..but so too would the CCV goal at Ibrox, and the shirt-pull on Goldson would have probably seen it disallowed. Our lead going into the final five games could have been three points and not six.

There are always two sides to a story, not necessarily equal sides, but two nevertheless.

VAR has been generally welcomed in England & elsewhere. It is still developing and no doubt refinements will ensue. To pre-judge and cite “bogeymen” is too much paranoia.

  14. After Hillsborough: very hard reading indeed.

Who is slated to provide the fair refereeing a eeek on Sunday?

Madden, Robertson, Beaton, Walsh or Dallas.

As others have commented, Beaton is normally the go to guy when the huns need a result. However, since Robertson has shown an inability to recognise serious assaults on Celtic players this season, he may be the surprised choice if the huns are going to continue to employ their “aggressive” tactics on Mayday.

Thugs like Lundstram will revel under Robertson’s laissez-faire attitude.

    ======

    Tom ,

With respect is it any more absurd than the decisions we see week in, week out ?

    The three I posted earlier?

“Cadetes equaliser in 1997 at Ibrox – an utterly scandalous decision.

The missed handball against Ict in 2015. Even worse, if that’s believable.

Willie collum giving a penalty that never was and he couldn’t physically even see – the worst of the three.”

Lundstram not being booked at the weekend ?

Remember Bougherras numerous fouls against Robbie Keane and yet no red after an early yellow?

(Those latter two were not just one off poor decisions but certainly in the Bougherra case a repeated and , imho , undeniably deliberate decision to apply the rules of the game to favour one team.)

Dougie McLean lying about a decision he made in the field of play?

I doubt an outsider looking in would consider those singularly, let alone cumulatively , against one team no less absurd.

but over time they got to really like it.

  21. I have a completely different view on VAR from Paul 67 .

    Remember “‘Dougie Dougie” .

When one miked official encouraged another to cheat .

Remember Farry stalling Cadete’s registration, so that he would miss a Scottish cup tie against The Real Rangers .

Var allows an unknown, unnamed ,secret official to call against Celtic and for our opponents, without the glare of publicity and with the benefit of anonymity.

These wee Masonic Celtic haters , will have the potential to hurt us without consequences.

Even under the glare of publicity that current referees are subject to .

    They have blatantly cheated .

The introduction of VAR is a major concern for me.

  27. VAR can only be good for us in the long run in my view.

I can’t see many early Christmas presents for us mind.

One thing Coneyboy said about it was better when you were onside if you are level…that is the rule today.

The problem about bawhair decisions is explained here from EPL site.

From the 2021/22 season, the process was tweaked as part of an adjustment to the implementation of VAR. Firstly, for marginal offside decisions, after the one-pixel lines are applied, the VAR puts on the thicker broadcast lines and where they overlap, those situations will now be deemed as onside.

    My questions are…

Who applies the one pixel line in first place?

How is marginal determined and by who?

Wtf are ‘thicker broadcast lines’ and how thick is thick? And who decides?

I assume it’s an algorithm that decides…but the parameters of ‘one pixel’, ‘thicker’ and ‘marginal’ need to be explained in detail, no?
