Virgil is in a different place than Victor and Gary were

Virgil van Dijk looks like a level-headed footballer, so I don’t think his game will be upset by his agent’s loose lips.  He has enjoyed a remarkably successful first season at Celtic Park but any attempt by his representatives to create an earner this summer is likely to be inhibited by the three years remaining on his Celtic contract.

There is always a risk of serious injury, but short of that, Virgil’s market value will not diminish in the next 12 months and may even appreciate.  He is in a completely different situation from Victor Wanyama and Gary Hooper, who glided into the last two and one year of their contracts respectively.

It’s a truism of football that those spending a nation’s the mineral wealth on football players tend to get what they want, but it remains to be seen if a handful of Champions League performances are enough to tempt this kind of approach onto the table.  Great player though he promises to be, Virgil’s not been tested at the top level over a prolonged period.

Thanks again for all your support of the Mary’s Meals Malawi school kitchen project ahead of Friday’s CQteN St Patrick’s Day dinner.  You can get involved here.

For whisky aficionados, we have a very special auction running between now and 12:00 on Friday.  We have bottle No. 1 of a limited edition (291 in total) Craigallachie Telford’s Bridge, in a wooden box and presentation cardboard tube, whit an authentication certificate.

  4. Eyes Wide Open on

    Disagree with Paul67 and Ryecatcher

The value of a purchase is not dictated by what a player has already achieved, moreover for those under 23 its based on what the buying club thinks they may go on to achieve.

Theo Wallcott and Alex Oxlaide Chamberlain were bought for obscene amounts of money at a time both still possessed childrens bodies.

Perhaps the most absurd of all was Phil Jones being bought for £16.5m at the age of 18/19 because of what some numpty deemed as ‘potential’.

Vigil is only 22 so still very much a kid.

When you place a value on to what he is likely to go on to achieve in his career his value is right up there, don’t allow ourselves to be kidded on by wishful thinking.

  5. Martin42,

  11. Money talks and if we get a good offer that suits us and him he’ll be off whether we make the CL group stages or not, at the minute we are a stepping stone to the EPL for these young players that why they come they no if they do well they’ll get a move, that’s the only reason they come to us, who in there right mind if they where good footballers would come to Scotland ? Johansen and biton are doing the exact same thing both will do great here then a decent offer comes in and there off. We need to do this to survive but we should be bringing in our young scottish players who support the club they would stay longer and we could build a team round them HH

Here is to Rose Theresa Brennan may she rest in peace having lived a full life amidst a great family.

With regard to the bottle of whisky for auction — let me expand upon what Paul has told you:

This is a unique offering for sale via CQN.

A specially bottled 11 year old single malt whisky from the Craigallachie distillery.

Craigallachie Telfrod’s Bridge bottle No 1 of only 291 in the world complete with certificate of authentication, presentation box and case, gift box and a print of Telford’s world famous Bridge at Craigallachie.

This whisky is a connoisseur’s or whisky collector’s dream due to it’s quality and rarity.

We could give you all the usual high falutin tasting notes that you find on high brow whisky sites but that is for any old run of the mill single malt.

No– this whisky is smoother than Curly John McNab’s head on an icy day.

Has a fantastic aftertaste that lasts longer than one of BRTH’s posts.

Has been prepared and nurtured more carefully and for longer than resolution 12.

Was distilled just before Henrik gave us that 1-0 lead against Blackburn Rovers on the way to Seville and was in the cask for a decade longer than Souness was manager of Blackburn.

This is a “Men against Boys” Whisky of considerable quality to be bought personally or by a CQN Consortium.

It is a Whisky that is more mature than the blog istelf — a CQN Whisky from one of our own.

We will accept bids right up until 5pm on the night of CQ10 by e-mail only with regular announcements re the highest bid received over the next few days.

The Whisky, the presentation case, box and print have all been donated by ACGR with all the proceeds going to our next Mary’s Meal’s Kitchen.

    So get bidding.

Remember what we are trying to do here folks. Real hunger — terrible, awful gut wretching hunger, still exists in this world in the 21st century.

I mentioned the late great Harry Chapin on the blog the other night. As well as being a musician, Chapin started the campaign against world hunger in the 70’s and was posthumously awarded the American Congressional Gold medal for his efforts.

Please watch the video below — but I warn you it is not for the feint of heart — and see what we are trying to alleviate.

If we raise the money for two kitchens we– CQN — will be taking the threat of this away from between 2,000- 3,000 children.

Please watch, please bid and if you can’t afford to bid, please do what you can via Paul’s just giving page which I have linked at the bottom of the page.

And if you are on twitter or facebook please spread this message.

This is as near to Walfrid as you will ever get.

    Thanks

  14. Martin42.

Sorry to hear of your mothers passing away,It will be a sad time for you, Paul & Kevin will help you to pull through this period in tome.

  15. Eyes wide open….

I hear your opinion mate and the logic is reasonably good.

    However……l

Walcott is world class on his day…….Wenger got it right there.

I don’t think Chamberlain has ever possessed a body typical of a child, but looking like Old Arsene has got this one right, too.

Phil Jones is a top class centre half, decent midfielder, but dreadful full back.Has had some storming games at very high level.

Virgil is unproven at top level compared to these.

Now in my opinion he will be every bit as good and possibly better than the players mentioned but like I said earlier…..I’m not signing the cheque,

He hasn’t proved himself even at Victor Wanyama’s level yet.

  16. First post, and it is to add my sincere condolences to paul and martin. Great lady, remember her well, childhood friend of my aunt Norah (Duffy)

  17. Paul and Martin –
