Virgil is in a different place than Victor and Gary were

Virgil van Dijk looks like a level-headed footballer, so I don’t think his game will be upset by his agent’s loose lips.  He has enjoyed a remarkably successful first season at Celtic Park but any attempt by his representatives to create an earner this summer is likely to be inhibited by the three years remaining on his Celtic contract.

There is always a risk of serious injury, but short of that, Virgil’s market value will not diminish in the next 12 months and may even appreciate.  He is in a completely different situation from Victor Wanyama and Gary Hooper, who glided into the last two and one year of their contracts respectively.

It’s a truism of football that those spending a nation’s the mineral wealth on football players tend to get what they want, but it remains to be seen if a handful of Champions League performances are enough to tempt this kind of approach onto the table.  Great player though he promises to be, Virgil’s not been tested at the top level over a prolonged period.

Thanks again for all your support of the Mary’s Meals Malawi school kitchen project ahead of Friday’s CQteN St Patrick’s Day dinner.  You can get involved here.

    It makes me smile when I read or hear Celtic supporters bleating about our best players moving on to bigger and better clubs and/or leagues.

    We’ve been doing exactly the same to Scottish clubs for decades.

    Not saying we have no right to buy up the better Scottish players, but we certainly have no right to cry about it when it happens to us.

    Until we get out of Scotland, it will ever be thus.

    =====================================================

    GCT, hows it going mate.

    Not sure if you’re on at the moment, just with regard to the above post, that is absolutely true that we, as a bigger club, have been known to plunder other Scottish clubs to sign players.

    I think the sticking point, however, is that most of the clubs in the English leagues are posting significant losses and/or in terms of supporters through the gates(merchandising etc) have only a fraction of the pulling power of Celtic, yet simply because of their location they are apparently a bigger draw, at the moment, but they don’t live within their means and bask in the reflected glory of the ‘glamourous’ bigger clubs.

    The day can’t come quick enough where we achieve a level playing field, whether it be via the video on demand/internet revolution or via a change in the structure of the European game.

    Of course, if/when this happens I don’t think any of us wants to go down the reckless spending route some of those clubs have been on, however it will be interesting to see who is plundering who for players when the day comes that there is a level playing field for us, and indeed all, Scottish clubs.
