Virgil is in a different place than Victor and Gary were

Virgil van Dijk looks like a level-headed footballer, so I don’t think his game will be upset by his agent’s loose lips.  He has enjoyed a remarkably successful first season at Celtic Park but any attempt by his representatives to create an earner this summer is likely to be inhibited by the three years remaining on his Celtic contract.

There is always a risk of serious injury, but short of that, Virgil’s market value will not diminish in the next 12 months and may even appreciate.  He is in a completely different situation from Victor Wanyama and Gary Hooper, who glided into the last two and one year of their contracts respectively.

It’s a truism of football that those spending a nation’s the mineral wealth on football players tend to get what they want, but it remains to be seen if a handful of Champions League performances are enough to tempt this kind of approach onto the table.  Great player though he promises to be, Virgil’s not been tested at the top level over a prolonged period.

Thanks again for all your support of the Mary’s Meals Malawi school kitchen project ahead of Friday’s CQteN St Patrick’s Day dinner.  You can get involved here.

I find it hard to argue with your logic but have a nagging doubt that the guys signing the cheques for anything over 8 million will not be interested in plonking a signature for a player who has played for an underperforming CL team and whose national side has not deemed him good enough for even a squad place.

Hope he rams it down their Oranjeboom throats,,but think it might be a wee while later for this.

Next season is a career defining season for him….just hope his agent doesn’t push him out the door to a bottom half EPL team.

Theres no doubt in my mind Virgil will benefit in the long run from staying with Celtic for another year (at least).

One of the strongest aspects of his game is his calmness personified on the ball – and if you cast your mind back to his first couple of games in the hoops he was anything but.

I’d hate for him to get (what foreign people perceive as) a ‘big move’ only for it to prove too much for the young fella, pressure leads to one thing and another and that aspect is reduced within his game.

I think another year in the hoops and he will be ready for literally anything.

Very difficult to keep these young guys around for much longer in the current ‘competitive’ environment.

We have the emotions and heart strings which as neutral as we all try to be when forming our opinions, still tells us Celtic are the best club in the world so why the donald would you want to leave before your 35th birthday!!?

Although to counter my own point I would argue Gary Hooper was significantly closer to the Brazil bound plane when he was in Glasgow. The list of strikers ahead of him in the queue at this moment in time probably includes championship players!

Someone posted earlier and I agree – the young hoops coming through the ranks are the guys likely to hang around for longer, so we need to use this current ‘competitive’ environment to be blooding more of them.

If they are not showing enough potential at the age of 18-19 (reserves are now u20’s..) then they dont stand much of a chance (centre halves omitted because they develop that bit later due to height / strength)

Sweet jesus completely forgot about him.

Dont even let anyone insult Virgil let alone Celtic with talk of a £10m bid in that case!!

Think Smalling is a diddy for Man Ure,too.

Would he still look as big a diddy in SPFL?

Ferguson got some signings spectacularly wrong and he looks like one of them.

    Rubentus.

The widow of the great Gaetano Scirea has asked Rubentus to change the name of part of their stadium . She wants them to stop calling it the Curva Scirea. and call it something else. Her reasons ———

” Gaetano Scirea should not be associated with the disgraceful behaviour which happens in that part of the stadium “

I agree re Smalling and how he would fair in the SPL – Boumsong looked every inch a £4m player when Souness signed him for £8m for Newcastle and look how average (at best) he was shown up to be.

  13. !!Bada Bing!! on

eyes wide open-great point re Hooper,if he was still scoring for us ,he would be closer to the WC than fighting relegation and not scoring at Norwich.
